Chapter 1: The Woman on the Floor

The first scream came at 8:17 p.m.
It echoed through the grand lobby of the Solmere Hotel, slicing through the soft piano music and the low murmur of wealthy guests.
“GET OUT!”
Every conversation stopped.
Champagne glasses froze halfway to lips.
Heads turned toward the center of the lobby.
And there, beneath a chandelier worth more than most people's homes, a young woman was being dragged across the polished marble floor.
Her name was Charlotte Vale.
But nobody in that room knew it.
At first glance, she looked like someone who had wandered into the wrong building.
She wore a faded gray tank top, cheap black pants, and worn sneakers. Her dark hair was messy, falling across one side of her face. One sleeve was torn.
Blood trickled from her palm.
There was a purple bruise beneath her left eye.
Her lower lip was split.
And her fingers were shaking as they scraped against the cold marble.
The woman dragging her was the complete opposite.
Victoria Sterling looked as though she had stepped out of a fashion magazine.
Her white silk gown shimmered beneath the chandeliers.
Diamond earrings hung from her ears.
A bracelet worth nearly $100,000 glittered around her wrist.
And every person in the lobby knew her.
Victoria was the daughter of one of the city's most influential families.
A socialite.
A celebrity.
A regular guest at Solmere's private events.
She stopped suddenly and looked down at Charlotte with disgust.
“You have five seconds to leave.”
Charlotte slowly lifted her head.
“I told you,” she whispered, “I have a right to be here.”
Victoria laughed.
Several people nearby exchanged uncomfortable glances.
“A right?”
Victoria crouched slightly.
“You?”
She pointed at Charlotte's clothes.
“Do you even know where you are?”
Charlotte looked around.
The massive marble staircase.
The golden reception desk.
The enormous crystal chandelier.
The wall displaying portraits of Solmere's founders.
She knew every inch of the building.
She had grown up here.
Her mother had brought her to this lobby when she was six.
She had learned to walk beside that very staircase.
She had spent her childhood hiding behind the reception desk while her father attended meetings upstairs.
And twenty years ago, her mother had whispered something to her beneath the same chandelier.
One day, Charlotte, all of this will belong to you.
But Charlotte had never imagined that returning home would look like this.
She swallowed.
“This hotel belongs to my family.”
Victoria stared at her.
Then she burst out laughing.
The sound traveled across the lobby.
“You're serious?”
Charlotte said nothing.
Victoria stood.
“Someone call security.”
A security guard immediately approached.
His name was Marcus.
Charlotte recognized him.
He had worked at Solmere for eleven years.
She remembered seeing him when she was a teenager.
But Marcus looked at her without recognition.
“Miss Sterling,” he said, “should we remove her?”
Victoria smiled.
“Absolutely.”
Charlotte's heart sank.
“Marcus.”
He paused.
Charlotte stared directly at him.
“You know me.”
His expression hardened.
“I don't.”
“You do.”
“I said I don't.”
Charlotte felt something cold settle inside her chest.
This wasn't random.
It was exactly what she had feared.
Someone had changed the records.
Someone had erased her.
Someone had spent years making sure nobody remembered Charlotte Vale.
Victoria stepped closer.
“You heard him.”
Charlotte pushed herself upright.
“I am Charlotte Vale.”
The lobby went strangely quiet.
One of the older executives standing near the bar suddenly lowered his champagne glass.
His face went pale.
But only for a second.
Then he turned away.
Charlotte noticed.
Her eyes narrowed.
He knows.
Victoria didn't.
“Charlotte Vale?” Victoria repeated.
Then she smiled.
“That's adorable.”
Charlotte clenched her bleeding hand.
“Don't touch me again.”
Victoria's smile disappeared.
“You're in no position to give me orders.”
She grabbed Charlotte's arm.
Charlotte tried to pull away.
Victoria yanked harder.
Charlotte stumbled.
Her shoulder struck the marble pillar.
Pain exploded through her body.
A gasp moved through the crowd.
Nobody intervened.
Victoria leaned close.
“You should be grateful I'm not having you arrested.”
Charlotte stared into her eyes.
“For what?”
“For trespassing.”
Charlotte almost laughed.
Instead, she whispered:
“You have no idea what you're doing.”
Victoria's expression hardened.
“Get her out.”
Two security guards moved toward Charlotte.
Then something happened.
The hotel's main elevator chimed.
Everyone turned.
A tall man in a black suit stepped out.
He was Daniel Cross.
General Manager of the Solmere Hotel.
For twenty-three years, Daniel had managed the flagship property.
He was known for his calm temperament.
He rarely raised his voice.
He rarely showed emotion.
And he never bowed to anyone.
Not politicians.
Not celebrities.
Not billionaires.
Not even members of the board.
But the moment Daniel looked across the lobby...
he stopped breathing.
His eyes locked onto Charlotte.
The color drained from his face.
Charlotte saw him.
Daniel saw her.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Then Daniel's gaze dropped.
He saw the blood on her hands.
The bruise on her face.
The torn clothing.
Something inside him snapped.
“Stop.”
His voice wasn't loud.
But the entire lobby heard it.
The security guards froze.
Victoria turned.
“Daniel?”
He didn't look at her.
He walked toward Charlotte.
Slowly.
One step.
Then another.
His face had become almost ghostly.
Charlotte's heart began pounding.
She had met Daniel only twice before.
Both times, she had been a child.
But she remembered something.
A silver watch.
A scar above his eyebrow.
And the way he had once knelt beside her when she fell off a bicycle.
Daniel stopped in front of her.
Charlotte looked up.
“Mr. Cross.”
His lips trembled.
He stared at her face.
Then at the small crescent-shaped birthmark beneath her right ear.
His eyes widened.
“No…”
Charlotte whispered:
“You remember me.”
Daniel's knees suddenly buckled.
He dropped to the marble floor.
The entire lobby gasped.
Victoria stared at him.
“What are you doing?”
Daniel didn't answer.
He bowed his head.
Then, with tears filling his eyes, he whispered words that made every conversation in the lobby die instantly.
“Miss Vale…”
Charlotte froze.
Daniel raised his face.
“Welcome home.”
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Victoria's smile disappeared.
Charlotte's heart slammed against her ribs.
Daniel slowly turned toward the reception desk.
“Activate the Founder Protocol.”
The receptionist stared at him.
“Sir?”
“Now.”
Her fingers trembled as she typed.
A red light appeared above the reception desk.
Then every screen in the lobby went black.
The piano stopped.
The chandeliers dimmed.
A deep electronic tone echoed through the hotel.
IDENTITY VERIFICATION REQUIRED.
Victoria looked around in confusion.
“What is happening?”
Daniel stood.
His voice was shaking.
“The owner has returned.”
Victoria stared at Charlotte.
“The owner?”
Charlotte said nothing.
A massive screen behind the reception desk suddenly flickered.
A photograph appeared.
A little girl.
Dark hair.
Bright eyes.
A small crescent-shaped birthmark beneath her right ear.
Underneath the photograph were three words:
CHARLOTTE ELIZABETH VALE
Then another line appeared.
LEGAL HEIR OF THE SOLMERE EMPIRE.
Victoria's face went completely white.
Someone dropped a champagne glass.
It shattered across the marble.
But Charlotte wasn't looking at the screen.
She was looking at Daniel.
Because there was something he hadn't told her.
Something hidden behind his terrified eyes.
Something that had nothing to do with Victoria.
Daniel stepped closer and lowered his voice.
“Miss Vale…”
Charlotte's expression tightened.
“What?”
Daniel glanced toward the executives standing near the bar.
Then toward the cameras.
Then toward the hotel doors.
And finally, he whispered:
“Your mother's death was not an accident.”
Charlotte stopped breathing.
Daniel looked over his shoulder.
One of the executives suddenly reached inside his jacket.
Charlotte noticed.
Daniel noticed too.
And before either of them could move, every light in the lobby went out.
A gunshot exploded through the darkness.
BANG!
Charlotte screamed.
And when the emergency lights came back on...
Daniel Cross was lying on the marble floor.
May you like
Blood spreading beneath him.
And the mysterious man who had fired the shot was already gone.
