Chapter 15: The Empire Chooses

The chapel fell silent.
Edward stood beneath the ancient Founder emblem, his gun pointed toward the three siblings.
Charlotte stared at him.
“One of us has to die?”
Edward smiled.
“That is what the Founder Oath says.”
Elena stepped forward.
“No.”
Edward looked at her.
“You've spent twenty years hiding the truth.”
His voice was cold.
“Now your children finally deserve to hear it.”
Charlotte looked at the inscription on the wall.
ONE FAMILY. ONE EMPIRE. ONE CHOICE.
She shook her head.
“You're lying.”
Edward laughed.
“Am I?”
He gestured toward the three circles carved into the floor.
“Your ancestor believed power destroyed families.”
“He designed the succession system so the heirs would eventually have to make the ultimate sacrifice.”
Alexander stepped forward.
“I'll do it.”
Charlotte grabbed his arm.
“No.”
Edward smiled.
“You see?”
He looked at Charlotte.
“Your brother is already willing to sacrifice himself.”
“Because he thinks he has to.”
Edward shook his head.
“He does.”
Catherine stepped forward.
“Then kill me.”
Charlotte turned.
“What?”
Catherine looked at Edward.
“My child will still carry the Founder bloodline.”
Edward's smile disappeared.
“You're not part of the equation.”
“I am.”
“No.”
Catherine's voice became stronger.
“I've spent my entire life being treated like a tool.”
She placed a hand over her stomach.
“My child will not.”
Edward's expression hardened.
“Move away from her.”
Charlotte stepped between them.
“No.”
Edward raised his gun.
“Charlotte.”
She didn't move.
“You want the empire?”
“Yes.”
“Then shoot me.”
Alexander grabbed her.
“Don't!”
Charlotte looked at him.
“I'm not giving him what he wants.”
Edward's eyes narrowed.
“What do you mean?”
Charlotte looked at the Founder emblem.
“The oath isn't about death.”
Edward laughed.
“You don't know what you're talking about.”
“I do.”
She walked toward the ancient inscription.
“My mother told me the Founder Trust was designed to prevent one person from controlling the empire.”
Edward's smile faded.
“So?”
“So the Founder would never design a system where one heir kills another.”
Elena looked at Charlotte.
She understood.
“Charlotte…”
Charlotte turned.
“Mom, what did the original oath actually say?”
Elena hesitated.
“The first version.”
“Yes.”
Elena whispered:
“The family must choose unity over inheritance.”
Charlotte looked at the inscription again.
“Then why was it changed?”
Edward's face changed.
Alexander stared at him.
“Dad.”
Edward said nothing.
“You changed the oath.”
Still nothing.
“You changed it so we would believe one of us had to die.”
Edward's jaw tightened.
Charlotte smiled.
“You didn't inherit the empire.”
“You rewrote the rules.”
Edward raised his weapon.
“Enough.”
A gunshot exploded.
But Alexander moved first.
He shoved Charlotte aside.
The bullet struck the stone wall.
Alexander fired back.
Edward ducked.
Chaos erupted.
Damian's men opened fire.
Elena pulled Catherine behind the altar.
Charlotte dropped to the floor.
The ancient chapel filled with smoke.
Alexander fired toward the doorway.
Two men fell.
Damian shouted:
“Take Charlotte alive!”
Charlotte crawled behind a pillar.
She saw the Founder device on the altar.
The same device her mother had carried.
She reached for it.
A hand grabbed her wrist.
Edward.
Charlotte screamed.
He dragged her toward the center of the chapel.
“Come with me.”
“Let go!”
“You have no idea what you're carrying.”
Charlotte fought him.
“You've lied to me my entire life!”
Edward's expression hardened.
“I protected you.”
“You erased me!”
“I saved you.”
“You killed Mom!”
Edward froze.
For the first time, Charlotte saw something in his eyes.
Pain.
Then anger.
“I didn't kill her.”
“You did.”
“No.”
Edward looked toward Elena.
“She chose to die.”
Elena stared at him.
“You know that's not true.”
Edward's voice broke.
“You left me no choice.”
Charlotte looked between them.
“What happened?”
Neither answered.
Then Elena stepped forward.
“I'll tell you.”
Edward raised his gun.
“Don't.”
Elena ignored him.
“Twenty years ago, I discovered Edward had created the Crown Circle.”
Charlotte listened.
“He had stolen control of several companies.”
“He had politicians under his influence.”
“He had people inside every part of Solmere.”
Elena's voice shook.
“I tried to expose him.”
Edward lowered his weapon slightly.
“You betrayed me.”
“I saved our children.”
“You destroyed our family.”
“No.”
Elena looked at Charlotte.
“You did.”
Edward stared at her.
“You chose them.”
“Yes.”
“You chose Charlotte.”
“I chose both of them.”
Edward's face twisted.
“You took Alexander.”
“You had him imprisoned.”
“I was protecting him.”
“You were controlling him.”
Edward shook his head.
“You don't understand.”
Elena's voice became cold.
“I understood the night you ordered the doctors to separate my children.”
Charlotte froze.
“You separated us?”
Edward looked at her.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because the Founder Marker was too dangerous.”
Charlotte shook her head.
“You were afraid of me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Edward looked toward the Founder device.
“Because the Founder Trust doesn't just control Solmere.”
Charlotte stared.
“What else does it control?”
Edward smiled bitterly.
“Everything.”
Charlotte frowned.
“Everything what?”
“Political assets.”
“Private intelligence networks.”
“Offshore accounts.”
“Defense contracts.”
“Media companies.”
“Judicial influence.”
Charlotte felt sick.
“The empire isn't just a company.”
“No.”
Edward's voice became quiet.
“It is a system.”
Charlotte finally understood why people had been willing to kill for it.
The Solmere Empire wasn't simply wealthy.
It was powerful enough to manipulate governments.
And her mother had spent twenty years trying to keep that power out of the wrong hands.
Edward looked at Charlotte.
“That's why I needed you.”
“You needed my blood.”
“Yes.”
“But you never wanted me.”
Edward's eyes softened.
“I wanted to protect you.”
Charlotte shook her head.
“By turning me into a key?”
“I didn't know another way.”
She stared at him.
“You could have told me the truth.”
Edward whispered:
“If I had…”
A gunshot interrupted him.
Edward fell backward.
Charlotte screamed.
“Dad!”
Everyone froze.
Damian stood across the chapel holding a smoking gun.
Edward looked down.
Blood spread across his shirt.
Damian smiled.
“Enough family drama.”
He aimed at Charlotte.
“The empire belongs to us.”
Alexander raised his weapon.
Damian fired.
Alexander collapsed.
“Alex!”
Charlotte ran toward him.
Catherine screamed.
Elena rushed forward.
Damian laughed.
“Three heirs.”
“One bullet.”
“Perfect.”
But Alexander opened his eyes.
He was bleeding from the shoulder.
The bullet had missed his heart.
He looked at Charlotte.
“Run.”
Charlotte shook her head.
“No.”
He pointed toward the Founder device.
“Now.”
Charlotte understood.
She grabbed the device.
Catherine took her hand.
Elena placed her hand over theirs.
The three bloodlines connected.
The Founder chamber began shaking.
Damian's smile disappeared.
“What are you doing?”
Charlotte shouted:
“Ending this.”
The ancient symbols beneath their feet illuminated.
One.
Two.
Three.
A deep voice echoed through the chamber.
FOUNDER IDENTITIES VERIFIED.
Damian stepped backward.
“No.”
ALEXANDER VALE. VERIFIED.
CHARLOTTE VALE. VERIFIED.
CATHERINE VALE. VERIFIED.
Damian raised his gun.
“Stop!”
The system continued.
FAMILY UNITY PROTOCOL ACTIVATED.
Charlotte stared.
The inscription on the wall changed.
The old words disappeared.
New words appeared.
NO HEIR SHALL RULE ALONE.
Damian fired.
But Elena stepped between them.
The bullet struck her.
Charlotte screamed.
“Mom!”
Elena fell into her arms.
“No!”
Charlotte held her.
Blood stained her hands.
Elena smiled weakly.
“Don't cry.”
“You're not dying.”
Elena touched Charlotte's face.
“I've already spent twenty years dying.”
“Mom…”
“Now I can finally live.”
Charlotte sobbed.
Elena looked toward Alexander.
Then Catherine.
“My children.”
Alexander crawled toward them.
“Mom.”
Elena reached for his hand.
“I never abandoned you.”
Alexander began crying.
“I know.”
She looked at Catherine.
“And you…”
Catherine held her hand.
“I know.”
Elena smiled.
Then she looked at Charlotte.
“Finish what I started.”
Charlotte nodded through her tears.
“I will.”
The Founder system announced:
TRANSFER COMPLETE.
Every screen in the chamber displayed a new legal structure.
SOLMERE FAMILY TRUST
CO-CONTROLLERS:
ALEXANDER VALE
CHARLOTTE VALE
CATHERINE VALE
Damian stared.
“No.”
He fired again.
This time Victor appeared behind him.
He knocked the weapon from Damian's hand.
“You're finished.”
Damian struggled.
“You don't understand what you've done.”
Victor restrained him.
“Oh, I understand.”
He looked at Charlotte.
“The entire empire has just changed hands.”
Sirens began echoing above the hospital.
Authorities flooded the building.
Richard was arrested.
Marcus was arrested.
Damian was taken away.
The Crown Circle's network collapsed within hours as the Founder Trust automatically froze its hidden assets.
But Edward was still lying on the chapel floor.
Charlotte walked toward him.
He looked up.
“I never wanted this.”
Charlotte knelt.
“You wanted control.”
“I wanted to protect you.”
“You should have trusted me.”
Edward closed his eyes.
“I was afraid.”
Charlotte stared at him.
“For the first time…”
She touched his hand.
“…so was I.”
Edward looked at her.
“Are you going to hate me?”
Charlotte shook her head.
“No.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“But I can't forgive you yet.”
Edward nodded.
“That is fair.”
Then his eyes closed.
The ambulance team rushed toward him.
Charlotte stood.
She looked at Alexander.
Then Catherine.
Then the Founder symbol.
For twenty years, Solmere had been controlled through fear.
Tonight, that ended.
But Charlotte knew the story wasn't over.
Because when the authorities searched the Founder Archive, they found something nobody had expected.
A final encrypted file.
Its title was simple:
PROJECT ECHO.
Charlotte opened it.
Inside was a list of names.
Politicians.
Executives.
Judges.
Celebrities.
Bankers.
And beside every name was a status.
ACTIVE.
Alexander stared at the screen.
“This isn't just Solmere.”
Charlotte nodded.
Catherine stepped closer.
“The Crown Circle was only one part.”
Victor looked grim.
“Then what is Project Echo?”
Charlotte opened the final page.
A message appeared.
IF THE VALE CHILDREN EVER REUNITE, INITIATE PHASE TWO.
Charlotte's blood ran cold.
“Phase Two?”
Then the screen displayed one final sentence.
THE REAL EMPIRE HAS JUST AWAKENED.
Charlotte looked at her brother and sister.
The three of them had survived the night.
They had reclaimed Solmere.
They had exposed the Crown Circle.
But somewhere beyond the walls of their family's empire, another network had just received the signal they had been waiting for.
And this time...
they weren't coming for the company.
May you like
They were coming for the three heirs.
End of Part One.
