CHAPTER 9 The Man Behind the Mask

The room erupted into motion.

"Lock the building down!" Rebecca shouted.

Steel security doors slammed shut throughout the safe house.

Emergency alarms echoed through the corridors.

Two agents rushed to Louisa, lifting her into protective custody.

I reached for her hand.

"It's okay, sweetheart. Stay with them."

She nodded, though terror filled her eyes.

On the monitor, Walter calmly pushed the cleaning cart down the hallway.

He wasn't running.

He wasn't hiding.

He walked with the confidence of someone who already knew the building's layout.

Because he did.

Rebecca stared at the screen.

"How did he get inside?"

An agent quickly answered.

"He scanned an employee badge."

"The badge belonged to maintenance supervisor Kevin Ross."

"Where's Ross?"

Another pause.

Then a grim reply.

"We just found him."

Everyone waited.

"He's unconscious in the basement."

Walter had entered the building wearing another man's identity.

It was exactly what his organization specialized in.

Floor Three

Walter stopped outside the pediatric recovery room.

Not Louisa's room.

The empty room next door.

He parked the cleaning cart.

Then slowly removed a mop bucket.

Hidden beneath the dirty towels...

was a compact assault rifle fitted with a suppressor.

Detective Mason swore under his breath.

"This wasn't a rescue."

Rebecca nodded.

"He came here to kill someone."

"But who?"

Walter answered the question himself.

He looked directly into the security camera.

Smiled.

And mouthed three words.

"Find the witness."

Another Memory

At that exact moment, Louisa tugged gently on my sleeve.

"Mommy..."

"What is it?"

"I remember the bell."

Rebecca immediately knelt beside her.

"The church bell?"

Louisa shook her head.

"No."

"The little bell."

"What little bell?"

Louisa closed her eyes.

"There was a necklace."

She touched her own chest.

"Grandpa said..."

Her tiny voice trembled.

"...never let the little girl keep the bell."

Rebecca frowned.

"What little girl?"

Louisa whispered,

"The one in the basement."

The room fell silent.

"The basement?"

Louisa nodded.

"There were lots of beds."

"And one girl had a necklace with a silver bell."

My heart raced.

The abandoned orphanage.

A basement.

Children.

Rebecca turned toward Mason.

"We may have survivors."

The Chase

Walter suddenly disappeared from the hallway cameras.

"Camera Twelve is offline."

"Camera Thirteen too."

"He cut the feeds."

Rebecca drew her pistol.

"Thermal drones."

Within seconds, two miniature drones lifted into the building's ventilation system.

Infrared images appeared across the command screen.

Patients glowed orange.

Agents moved in blue.

One lone figure burned bright red.

Moving.

Fast.

Straight toward the secure evidence vault.

Mason frowned.

"The vault?"

Rebecca's eyes widened.

"The notebook."

Victor's ledger.

Walter hadn't returned for Louisa.

He'd returned for the evidence.

The Vault

Three armed agents reached the vault first.

The steel door remained locked.

One agent checked inside through the narrow security window.

"Clear."

Then...

The ceiling panel above them exploded downward.

Walter dropped from the ventilation shaft.

Before anyone could react, he fired three suppressed shots.

Bang.

Bang.

Bang.

All three agents collapsed.

Body armor stopped two bullets.

The third struck an agent's shoulder.

Walter landed smoothly.

Swiped an access card from the unconscious guard.

And opened the vault.

Inside sat shelves of seized evidence.

Passports.

Hard drives.

Victor's notebook.

Walter ignored everything except a small black envelope marked:

PROJECT BELL.

He slipped it into his jacket.

Turned.

And found Rebecca standing in the doorway.

Gun raised.

"It's over, Walter."

He smiled.

"No."

"It's beginning."

Face to Face

For the first time since the bridge, Walter and Rebecca stood only a few feet apart.

"You've nowhere to go," she said.

Walter laughed softly.

"You still think this is about escape."

He slowly raised his empty hands.

"No weapon?"

Rebecca asked.

"I don't need one."

She didn't lower her gun.

"What is Project Bell?"

Walter's smile faded.

"You've already met Bell."

Rebecca frowned.

"What does that mean?"

He looked past her.

Toward me.

Toward Louisa.

Then he quietly said,

"The child remembers."

A chill swept through the room.

Walter continued.

"Children remember differently than adults."

"They forget faces."

"But never sounds."

Rebecca's eyes narrowed.

"The silver bell."

Walter nodded.

"Exactly."

The Secret

Walter took another step.

Rebecca held her position.

"Stay where you are."

He ignored her.

"Do you know why Louisa survived?"

No one answered.

"Because she heard the bell."

My pulse quickened.

"What bell?"

Walter looked at me.

"The same bell you heard."

Every memory I'd struggled to recover over the past week came rushing back.

The cabin.

The river.

The orphanage.

The darkness.

And...

A faint ringing.

Tiny.

Metallic.

Almost musical.

I'd heard it before.

When I was seven.

Walter smiled as realization spread across my face.

"You remember now."

The Bell Program

Walter sighed.

"I suppose it doesn't matter anymore."

He slowly removed the black envelope from his jacket.

Inside was a faded photograph.

Twenty children.

Standing in two neat rows.

Each wore an identical silver bell necklace.

Walter held it up.

"This was Project Bell."

Rebecca stared.

"What is it?"

"Our insurance policy."

"You kidnapped children?"

"No."

"We selected them."

"Selected?"

"The ones with exceptional memories."

No one understood.

Walter continued.

"Children who could remember numbers after seeing them once."

"Voices after hearing them once."

"Routes."

"Faces."

He looked at Louisa.

"Like your daughter."

My blood turned to ice.

"You shaved her head..."

"...to make her think that was the worst thing we could do."

Rebecca whispered,

"So she'd stop remembering everything else."

Walter smiled.

"Exactly."

The Last Twist

Suddenly, every light in the building went out.

Emergency power failed.

Darkness swallowed the corridor.

Gunfire erupted.

Agents shouted.

Someone screamed.

When the backup generators finally kicked in eight seconds later...

Walter was gone.

So was the black envelope.

And on the floor where he'd been standing...

lay only a tiny silver bell.

It chimed once.

Softly.

Almost innocently.

Then an analyst burst into the hallway, breathless.

"Agent Sloan!"

"What?"

"We decrypted Victor's hard drive!"

Rebecca turned.

"What did you find?"

The analyst swallowed.

"There aren't hundreds of children."

Rebecca frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"There are..."

He looked down at the screen in disbelief.

"...two thousand one hundred and forty-six."

Then he raised his eyes.

"And one of them..."

He looked directly at me.

"...is listed as Emily Carter."

Not Emily Brooks.

Not Emily Williams.

May you like

The name on the screen was the name I'd taken after marriage.

Someone had added me to the list... last week.
