CHAPTER 12 The Bell in the Dark

Ding...
The tiny silver bell echoed through the underground corridors.
Not loud.
Not frantic.
Just one slow, deliberate chime.
Every FBI agent instinctively raised their weapon.
Flashlights swept across the darkness.
Nothing.
Only empty hallways lined with peeling paint and rusted doors.
Rebecca pressed her radio.
"Command, do you copy?"
Only static answered.
The reinforced steel doors had blocked every signal.
"We're cut off," Detective Mason said.
Rebecca nodded.
"Stay together."
"No one separates."
The Voice
The speakers crackled again.
Walter sounded almost cheerful.
"If you're hearing this..."
"...you've finally reached the place where Project Bell began."
The bell rang once more.
Ding...
"When people hear the word experiment, they imagine monsters."
"They imagine torture."
"They imagine madness."
A pause.
"They're usually right."
The lights flickered.
One by one, old computer monitors scattered throughout the underground facility switched on.
Every screen displayed the same image.
A nursery.
Rows of newborn babies.
Each crib had a small silver bell hanging above it.
One crib was highlighted in red.
SUBJECT ZERO
Me.
The Truth About Project Bell
Rebecca approached the nearest terminal.
Despite its age, the system still had power.
The hard drive hummed to life.
A video file began playing automatically.
The date stamp read:
July 3, 2006.
My birthday.
A younger Dr. Richard Hale appeared on screen.
His white lab coat was spotless.
His voice calm.
Measured.
Clinical.
"Memory defines identity."
"If memory can be preserved perfectly..."
"...humanity will never truly lose knowledge again."
The recording continued.
"Project Bell was created to identify children with exceptional episodic memory."
"The original objective was educational."
Rebecca frowned.
"So it started legally..."
Mason wasn't convinced.
"Keep watching."
Dr. Hale sighed.
"Funding cuts forced private investment."
Another face appeared beside him.
Walter.
Twenty years younger.
Smiling.
"Private investors requested military applications."
The room fell silent.
"Children capable of recalling every map, every code, every face after a single exposure..."
"...would become the perfect intelligence assets."
Rebecca whispered,
"My God..."
Evelyn Hale
The video changed.
A woman entered the frame.
She looked no older than thirty.
Dark hair.
Gentle eyes.
She smiled warmly as she lifted a newborn baby into her arms.
My heart stopped.
Even before Rebecca spoke...
I knew.
"This is Dr. Evelyn Hale."
My mother.
She looked directly into the camera.
"This child isn't a subject."
"She's my daughter."
The baby opened her tiny eyes.
A silver bell hung above the crib.
Subject Zero.
Me.
Evelyn continued.
"My father wants to prove memory can be inherited."
"He wants to test my child."
Tears filled her eyes.
"I won't let him."
The recording suddenly jolted violently.
Someone had entered the room.
Walter.
"You don't have a choice."
Evelyn stepped backward, clutching the baby.
"Stay away from her."
Walter smiled.
"The investors disagree."
The video ended abruptly.
A Mother's Choice
Another recording began automatically.
Security footage.
Hospital hallway.
Timestamp:
Two days later.
Evelyn ran through the corridor carrying the baby.
Me.
She wasn't alone.
A man in a police uniform held open a rear exit.
Rebecca paused the image.
"Zoom in."
The officer's name badge became visible.
David Brooks.
I couldn't breathe.
"My father..."
Rebecca nodded slowly.
"He wasn't your biological father."
"But he saved you."
The footage showed David Brooks placing Evelyn and the baby into an old station wagon.
Walter burst through the hospital doors seconds later.
Too late.
The car disappeared into the night.
The Sacrifice
One final video remained.
This one was labeled:
CONFIDENTIAL
It showed Evelyn sitting alone.
Exhausted.
Bruised.
She looked directly into the camera.
"If anyone finds this..."
"...my father has already taken me."
She smiled sadly.
"But Emily escaped."
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"David and Sarah Brooks promised to raise her as their own."
"They'll tell her she's loved."
"They'll never tell her about Project Bell."
She hesitated.
"If my daughter ever sees this..."
Her voice broke.
"I'm sorry."
"I couldn't stay."
The screen went black.
I collapsed into a chair.
For twenty years...
I'd believed my parents had simply been my parents.
Now I knew the truth.
They had chosen me.
Not because they had to.
Because they wanted to.
Walter's Final Message
The speakers activated again.
Walter laughed softly.
"Beautiful story, isn't it?"
Rebecca looked around the dark laboratory.
"Show yourself."
"No."
"I've done enough hiding."
The bell rang again.
Ding...
"You've all been asking the wrong question."
"What question?"
Rebecca demanded.
Walter answered calmly.
"You keep asking where I am."
A pause.
"You should be asking..."
"...who's paying for this."
The lights throughout the underground complex suddenly switched on.
Full power.
The room brightened.
On the far wall...
A massive projector descended from the ceiling.
A live video conference filled the screen.
Not one person.
Not two.
More than twenty faces.
Men and women.
Some elderly.
Some young.
Some in expensive suits.
Others in military uniforms.
One wore a judge's robe.
Another...
A United States senator.
Every camera feed displayed a name.
Rebecca recognized several instantly.
High-ranking officials.
Corporate executives.
Defense contractors.
One face made her blood run cold.
She whispered,
"No..."
Mason followed her gaze.
His expression collapsed.
On the screen...
Sitting calmly in a leather chair...
was FBI Deputy Director Thomas Granger.
Rebecca's direct superior.
The man who had authorized the entire investigation.
He smiled politely.
Then looked straight into the camera.
"Agent Sloan."
"You've done excellent work."
Rebecca slowly lowered her pistol.
"Sir..."
He folded his hands.
"You've led us directly back to Subject Zero."
Every face on the screen turned toward me.
May you like
Deputy Director Granger smiled.
"Thank you for bringing Emily home."
