Chapter 8 - The chapel had been abandoned since Elena was eight. She remembered it.

Not because of prayer.
Because of the night her childhood ended.
The old stone building sat behind the Sterling cemetery, hidden beneath trees.
Julian parked outside.
Elena stepped out.
Rain had stopped.
The world was silent.
Too silent.
âStay behind me,â Julian said.
Elena almost smiled.
âYou're not exactly a trained soldier.â
âNo.â
He checked the handgun.
âBut I've had a terrible week.â
She smiled despite herself.
They entered.
Dust covered the pews.
Candles burned near the altar.
A woman stood beneath the stained-glass window.
Her back was turned.
Elena stopped breathing.
The woman slowly turned.
It was like looking into a mirror that had lived another life.
Same eyes.
Same face.
Different scars.
The woman's name was Ava.
Elena whispered:
âAva.â
Ava smiled.
âYou remember.â
âI don't remember you.â
âYou were five.â
âI was eight.â
âNo.â
Ava stepped closer.
âYou were five when we were separated.â
Elena shook her head.
âThat isn't possible.â
âIt is.â
Ava touched her own wrist.
âYou had a birthmark here.â
Elena looked down.
She had one too.
Ava smiled.
âMother said you were weak.â
Elena's eyes filled.
âShe said you died.â
âShe told you that because you were the one she chose to save.â
Julian stepped forward.
âSave you from what?â
Ava looked at him.
âFrom Victor.â
She lowered her voice.
âHe wanted both of us.â
âWhy?â
âBecause we were useful.â
Elena's stomach turned.
âUseful for what?â
Ava laughed softly.
âDo you really want to know?â
âYes.â
Ava looked at the altar.
âYour father discovered that Victoria wasn't the mastermind.â
Elena already knew.
âBut he didn't know how deep it went.â
Ava continued.
âVictor was part of an international network.â
Julian frowned.
âWhat network?â
âThe network controlling ports.â
Ava looked at Elena.
âGovernments.â
âBanks.â
âShipping unions.â
âPrivate security companies.â
âElena.â
Her voice became cold.
âThis wasn't a family crime empire.â
âIt was an organization.â
âWhat organization?â
Ava smiled.
âThe Black Meridian.â
Julian's face changed.
He recognized the name.
âYou've heard of it,â Elena said.
âNo.â
Ava interrupted.
âEveryone has.â
She walked toward him.
âYou just don't know it by that name.â
Elena glanced at the walls.
âWhat does the chapel have to do with them?â
Ava pointed toward a stone beneath the altar.
âYour mother buried something here.â
Elena knelt.
She removed the stone.
Inside was a metal box.
The same three-line symbol appeared on the lid.
Ava said:
âOpen it.â
Elena inserted the ring.
The box opened.
Inside was a photograph.
Two little girls.
Standing together.
Behind them stood Victoria.
Daniel.
And another man.
Victor.
Elena picked it up.
Something was written on the back.
She read aloud.
THE FIRST KEY: BLOOD.
Her hands began to shake.
Then she found another photograph.
This one showed only one child.
Ava.
But the date was different.
Elena frowned.
âWhy is this dated three years after we were supposedly separated?â
Ava stopped smiling.
Elena looked at her.
âYou weren't here.â
Ava slowly shook her head.
âNo.â
âWhere were you?â
Ava stared at her.
âI was in Switzerland.â
Elena froze.
âWhy?â
Ava whispered:
âI was the child they used to test the vault system.â
Julian stepped closer.
âWhat does that mean?â
Ava looked directly at Elena.
âYour ring wasn't designed for Victoria.â
Elena's blood ran cold.
âIt was designed for me.â
Before anyone could speak, the chapel doors exploded inward.
Gunmen flooded the room.
Julian pulled Elena down.
Ava fired first.
The chapel became a storm of bullets and shattered glass.
A man shouted:
âTake the twins alive!â
Elena stared at Ava.
âTwins?â
Ava looked back.
âYes.â
May you like
She grabbed Elena's hand.
âBecause they need both of us.â
