Chapter 3 - Julian stared at her.He did not blink.

He simply looked at Elena as though his mind had stopped processing language.

“My sister?”

Elena nodded.

Victoria backed away.

“No.”

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

“No.”

“I was born seventeen years before you.”

Victoria's face twisted.

“That's impossible.”

“You told everyone I died.”

“I saw you die.”

“You saw a child in a hospital bed.”

Victoria shook her head.

“That was you.”

“No.”

Elena stepped closer.

“It was another girl.”

Victoria suddenly seemed older.

The strength drained from her posture.

Julian whispered:

“Why would you hide your own daughter?”

Victoria looked at him.

“Because she was dangerous.”

Elena's expression hardened.

“To you.”

Victoria said nothing.

Elena continued.

“You were embezzling money even then. Your first offshore company wasn't created in Zurich.”

She pointed toward Victoria.

“It was created in Singapore.”

Victoria's eyes widened.

Elena smiled bitterly.

“You were using your father's shipping company to move undeclared cargo.”

Julian looked horrified.

“Mom.”

Victoria snapped.

“You don't understand.”

“I understand enough.”

“No, you don't.”

Victoria turned toward Elena.

“You were a child.”

“I was eight.”

“I was protecting you.”

“You abandoned me.”

The words landed like a knife.

Julian looked between them.

“What happened?”

Elena's voice became quiet.

“Your mother discovered that I had seen something I wasn't supposed to see.”

Victoria's face went pale.

“A shipment came through the docks. There was a fire.”

Elena paused.

“People died.”

Julian's jaw tightened.

“How many?”

Elena looked at Victoria.

“Thirty-two.”

Victoria whispered:

“It was an accident.”

“No.”

Elena's voice shook.

“It was deliberate.”

The investigators were approaching in the distance.

Victoria stared toward them.

Then back at Elena.

“You have no proof.”

Elena smiled.

“Yes, I do.”

She reached into her clutch.

Julian watched as she removed a small black flash drive.

“This contains the original manifests.”

Victoria's eyes widened.

“How?”

“I spent twelve years finding them.”

“Where?”

“Inside the walls of your estate.”

Julian suddenly remembered something.

“The ring.”

Elena nodded.

“The ring was a decoy.”

Victoria frowned.

“What?”

“The biometric key was real.”

Elena looked at her.

“But the ledger wasn't.”

Victoria froze.

“The Swiss vault contained a copy.”

Elena held up the flash drive.

“The original evidence was always here.”

Victoria's breathing became rapid.

“You couldn't have gotten into the estate.”

“I did.”

“When?”

Elena smiled.

“When you hired me.”

Julian stared.

“You worked here before?”

Elena nodded.

“For eight months.”

Victoria looked confused.

“You were one of the temporary finance consultants.”

“Yes.”

“You changed your appearance.”

“Yes.”

“You changed your name.”

“Yes.”

“You planned this.”

“For twelve years.”

Julian took a step back.

He looked heartbroken.

“Did you ever love me?”

Elena's face cracked.

“That was the one part I never planned.”

Julian stared at her.

“Then why did you marry me?”

“I didn't.”

“What?”

“The wedding hasn't happened yet.”

Julian looked toward the untouched ceremony arch.

The priest was gone.

The guests were fleeing.

The investigators were closing in.

Everything they had planned that evening had already collapsed.

Elena whispered:

“I came to destroy Victoria Sterling.”

She paused.

“But I fell in love with Julian Sterling.”

Julian's expression softened.

For one fragile second, the chaos around them disappeared.

Then a phone rang.

Victoria's.

She looked down.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A distorted voice spoke.

“Your son has the wrong sister.”

Victoria froze.

“What?”

The caller laughed.

“You thought Elena was your daughter.”

A pause.

“She isn't.”

Victoria looked at Elena.

Elena looked confused.

The voice continued.

“Your real daughter is standing somewhere else.”

Victoria's face went white.

“Who are you?”

The line went dead.

Julian took the phone from her hand.

“What did they say?”

Victoria looked at Elena.

Then toward the dark river beyond the estate.

Her lips trembled.

“I don't know.”

Elena's eyes narrowed.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Because the stranger had known about a secret that even she had never questioned.

The identity of Elena Vale.

The identity of Victoria's daughter.
