CHAPTER 2 – The Nursery That Should Never Have Existed

The first explosion shattered every window facing the eastern gardens.

The second knocked crystal chandeliers into a violent sway.

By the third, every guest in the ballroom had abandoned elegance. Women screamed. Men dove behind marble pillars. Security agents flooded toward the entrance with assault rifles raised.

Only Alessandro Moretti remained perfectly still.

His dark eyes reflected the flames rising beyond the mansion gates.

Someone hadn't merely attacked his convoy.

They had timed the explosion to coincide with the discovery of Emma.

It was a message.

A declaration of war.

Luca pressed a hand to his earpiece.

"Alpha Team, report."

Static.

Then a strained voice crackled through.

"Convoy Three is destroyed. Two vehicles disabled. We have casualties..."

Gunfire erupted over the transmission.

The signal died.

Alessandro slowly turned.

"Seal the estate."

Within seconds, steel security shutters descended over every entrance. Hidden bulletproof barriers rose from beneath the marble floors, dividing the ballroom into fortified sections. Guests stared in horror. Few of them had realized the Moretti mansion could transform into a fortress in less than thirty seconds.

No one was leaving.

Not until Alessandro knew who had brought the enemy to his doorstep.

His gaze drifted back to Vanessa.

She stood perfectly still, though her breathing had become uneven.

"You seem nervous," Alessandro said quietly.

"I'm terrified," Vanessa replied, forcing tears into her eyes. "Someone is trying to destroy our family."

"Our family?"

The words carried no warmth.

Only suspicion.

Vanessa stepped toward him.

"Please... don't let that woman manipulate you."

She pointed directly at me.

"I don't even know where she came from."

Before I could answer, Emma tugged gently on my sleeve.

"Mama..."

"What is it, sweetheart?"

She pointed toward Vanessa.

"The pretty lady smells funny."

Several guests exchanged confused glances.

Children often noticed things adults ignored.

Vanessa's smile stiffened.

"What do you mean, sweetheart?"

Emma tilted her head.

"The same medicine smell as upstairs."

Every muscle in Vanessa's body tightened.

Alessandro noticed.

"So there was medicine upstairs."

"I never said that," Vanessa snapped.

Emma frowned.

"But you did."

Vanessa's face lost another shade of color.

The little girl continued innocently.

"You were talking to the man with glasses."

"You said the medicine had to stay cold."

Luca immediately looked at Alessandro.

"The medical case."

Alessandro nodded once.

"Bring it."

Minutes later, two guards returned carrying the silver medical container Emma's tiny key had opened earlier.

Its contents had already shocked everyone.

Fertility records.

Embryo storage documents.

Blood test results under multiple aliases.

But now Alessandro noticed something he had ignored before.

A removable false bottom.

He reached inside.

His fingers found another envelope.

Black.

Sealed with wax.

No writing.

The room watched as he broke the seal.

Inside lay six photographs.

Each showed the same nursery.

The nursery Luca had just discovered inside Vanessa's penthouse.

But something was different.

The dates.

One photograph had been taken six months ago.

Another three months ago.

Another only twelve days earlier.

Every image showed fresh toys.

Fresh bottles.

Fresh blankets.

Someone had been preparing for a child.

Not an unborn baby.

A living one.

Vanessa's voice trembled.

"I've never seen those."

"No?"

Alessandro held up the final photograph.

A woman stood beside the crib.

Her face had been scratched away with a knife.

But one detail remained untouched.

A ruby engagement ring.

The exact ring Vanessa was wearing.

No one spoke.

Vanessa instinctively hid her hand behind her back.

Too late.

"You can explain," Alessandro said.

"I..."

Before she could answer, another guard rushed into the ballroom.

"Boss!"

"What?"

"We found fingerprints."

"Whose?"

"The child's."

Every eye turned toward Emma.

The guard continued.

"Emma's fingerprints are all over the nursery."

I felt my stomach drop.

"That's impossible."

Emma had never been inside Vanessa's penthouse.

Had she?

Then memory struck me.

Three days earlier...

Emma had disappeared for almost twenty minutes while I was cleaning the west wing.

I had searched everywhere.

When I finally found her, she had been sitting quietly near the servants' staircase, humming to herself.

I had asked where she'd been.

She had simply answered...

"I was playing with the dolls."

I thought she meant the dolls in the playroom.

Now...

I wasn't so sure.

Emma suddenly looked up.

"I forgot something."

"What, sweetheart?"

"My bunny."

"What bunny?"

"The fluffy one upstairs."

Vanessa's eyes widened.

Emma slipped free from my hand before anyone could stop her.

She ran toward the grand staircase.

"Emma!"

I chased after her.

So did Alessandro.

The entire ballroom seemed to surge behind us.

Up one flight.

Then another.

Emma moved with surprising confidence.

She wasn't guessing.

She knew exactly where she was going.

She stopped outside a white door.

"It's here."

The room belonged to Vanessa.

Security had already searched it.

Or so everyone believed.

Emma pushed open a narrow closet hidden behind a velvet curtain.

Inside...

Nothing.

Just shelves.

Cleaning supplies.

Old boxes.

Emma frowned.

"It was here."

She placed both tiny hands against the back wall.

Click.

A mechanical sound echoed through the closet.

The entire rear panel slid sideways.

A hidden passage.

Cold air rushed out.

Darkness stretched beyond.

Luca whispered,

"Secret tunnel..."

Flashlights snapped on.

The passage descended beneath the mansion.

Concrete walls.

Electrical wiring.

Recently installed security cameras.

Someone had built this place not decades ago...

But within the last year.

Halfway down the tunnel, Emma suddenly smiled.

"My bunny!"

She ran ahead.

I barely caught up before she reached a small underground room.

There, sitting neatly on a child's bed...

Was a white stuffed rabbit.

Emma hugged it happily.

"I told you!"

Alessandro's attention wasn't on the toy.

It was on the wall.

Covered from floor to ceiling...

With photographs.

Hundreds of them.

Emma sleeping.

Emma at the park.

Emma eating ice cream.

Emma entering preschool.

Emma holding my hand.

Pictures taken over three years.

Thousands of moments.

None of which I had ever known were being watched.

Someone had followed us.

Every.

Single.

Day.

I felt my knees weaken.

"Oh God..."

Alessandro slowly removed one photograph.

On the back, someone had written in black ink:

Subject One remains healthy.

Subject One.

Not Emma.

Not a child.

A subject.

Below it was another note.

Awaiting Subject Two.

Luca stared at the words.

"Boss..."

He pointed toward another wall.

A large map of New York covered it.

Red pins marked hospitals.

Schools.

Playgrounds.

Churches.

And in the center...

Two photographs placed side by side.

The first was Emma.

The second...

An empty picture frame.

Waiting.

As though someone intended to place another child's photograph beside hers.

Alessandro's expression darkened.

"They're looking for another girl."

Before anyone could respond, a tiny electronic beep echoed through the room.

Luca looked down.

Hidden beneath Emma's stuffed rabbit...

A digital timer.

00:08

"What is that?"

00:07

Luca's eyes widened.

"Bomb!"

00:06

Alessandro lunged toward Emma, pulling her into his arms.

00:05

"Everyone out!"

Guards shoved us toward the tunnel.

00:04

The timer suddenly stopped.

Silence.

Then the rabbit's stitched mouth split open by itself.

A tiny speaker crackled to life.

A distorted male voice filled the underground chamber.

"Welcome back, Alessandro."

"You finally found your daughter."

A pause.

"But you're still looking at the wrong child..."

The recording ended with a chilling laugh.

Then one final sentence echoed through the tunnel.

"Ask the housekeeper why Emma has no memory before the hospital."

The room fell silent.

Every pair of eyes slowly turned toward me.

Including Emma's.

"Mama..."

May you like

Her tiny voice trembled.

"Is that true?"
