Chapter 13 – The Vault That Remembered

The music stopped all at once.
Silence settled over the underground chamber with unsettling precision.
Then...
A single chime rang somewhere below.
Emma lifted her head.
"Someone opened the last door."
Father Gabriel slowly closed his eyes.
"No."
"The last door opened itself."
The stone floor trembled again.
This time, the vibration wasn't violent.
It was rhythmic.
Like the heartbeat of an enormous machine buried beneath the river.
Luca swept his flashlight toward the dark passage descending beyond the Memory Room.
A narrow staircase spiraled into darkness.
It hadn't been there a minute earlier.
The wall itself had shifted aside.
Alessandro looked toward Father Gabriel.
"You knew this existed."
"I knew stories about it."
"And you never searched?"
The priest smiled faintly.
"Some places aren't found by searching."
"They're found by arriving."
The group descended carefully.
Every twenty steps another lantern lit itself.
No electricity.
No wires.
Only old brass lamps that seemed to awaken as people passed.
The passage finally opened into a circular vault unlike anything they had ever seen.
Shelves stretched upward nearly forty feet.
Instead of books...
Thousands of sealed wooden boxes filled the room.
Each carried a brass plate.
A person's name.
A year.
Nothing else.
Clara reached toward the nearest one.
Margaret Ellis
1958
Another.
Anthony Romano
1974
Then another.
Sophia Moretti
2023
Alessandro stopped.
His wife's name.
He carefully lifted the box from the shelf.
It felt surprisingly light.
Before he could open it, Father Gabriel raised a hand.
"Every box contains one memory."
Luca frowned.
"That's impossible."
The priest looked around the vault.
"Not memories themselves."
"The proof they existed."
Emma wandered quietly between the shelves.
Unlike the adults, she wasn't looking at the names.
She was counting.
"...ninety-eight."
"...ninety-nine."
"...one hundred."
She suddenly stopped.
"This shelf is wrong."
Luca walked over.
"What do you mean?"
"There should be one more."
She pointed to an empty space between two boxes.
Only dust remained.
A brass label had been ripped away.
The wood beneath showed fresh scratches.
Someone had removed a box recently.
Very recently.
Alessandro carefully opened Sophia's box.
Inside rested only three objects.
A silver hairpin.
A pressed white orchid.
And a cassette tape.
Nothing more.
No letters.
No photographs.
He picked up the tape with trembling hands.
"What now?"
Father Gabriel looked toward an ancient tape recorder sitting alone on a nearby desk.
"It has waited a long time."
The cassette clicked into place.
Static filled the room.
Then Sophia's voice returned.
If anything, it sounded calmer than before.
"If you're hearing this, then the Vault still stands."
A pause.
"Good."
"That means they never found everything."
Alessandro closed his eyes.
For the first time in years, he heard not the legend of Sophia Moretti...
But the woman he loved.
"Alessandro..."
"If you're here..."
"...please forgive me for disappearing."
His hands tightened around the recorder.
"I didn't leave because I stopped loving you."
"I left because someone inside our world had already decided our daughter would become evidence."
Clara exchanged a confused glance with Luca.
Evidence.
Again.
The same word.
"You must stop asking who wanted Emma."
"Ask who feared what she would someday learn."
The recording crackled.
Then ended.
Before anyone could speak, every lantern in the vault flickered.
One...
By one...
By one...
Until only a single light remained.
Emma quietly walked toward it.
The last lantern hung beside a heavy iron cabinet.
Unlike the shelves, it had no name.
Only a symbol.
A raven carrying an unlit lantern.
Emma reached out.
The cabinet door slowly creaked open.
Inside...
There was no box.
No documents.
Only an old mirror.
Its silver frame had darkened with age.
The glass was flawless.
Clara frowned.
"A mirror?"
Emma stared into it.
"So pretty..."
For a moment, only her reflection looked back.
Then...
The reflection smiled.
Emma hadn't.
The adults froze.
The reflected child gently lifted one finger...
And pointed behind Emma.
Everyone turned instinctively.
Nothing.
When they looked back at the mirror...
The reflection was normal again.
Emma blinked.
"The little girl says we're late."
A chill swept through the chamber.
Father Gabriel whispered a prayer under his breath.
Alessandro's voice was steady.
"What little girl?"
Emma tilted her head.
"The one inside."
Suddenly, Luca's secure phone vibrated again.
Another anonymous message.
This time...
Not a photograph.
A blueprint.
He enlarged it.
His expression changed instantly.
"What is it?" Alessandro asked.
Luca silently handed him the phone.
The blueprint showed the underground vault in perfect detail.
Except...
There was one room missing.
The room they were standing in.
Across the bottom of the blueprint someone had typed:
WARNING
The Vault was designed with twelve chambers.
You have entered Chamber Thirteen.
Luca looked around slowly.
"There is no Chamber Thirteen on any plan."
Father Gabriel's face became pale.
"Then..."
"...we're somewhere we were never supposed to find."
Before anyone could react, the mirror behind Emma cracked from top to bottom without anyone touching it.
A tiny folded note slipped through the broken glass and landed at Emma's feet.
She picked it up.
On the front, in elegant handwriting, were only seven words:
Arthur knew. Arthur chose. Arthur is waiting.
At that exact moment...
From somewhere beyond the shattered mirror...
Three slow knocks echoed.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Not on the glass.
On a door...
May you like
Hidden behind it.
