CHAPTER 1 — The Bracelet No Housekeeper Could Explain

No one spoke.

The ballroom, moments ago filled with music and crystal laughter, had become so silent that I could hear Emma's tiny breathing beside me.

My daughter clutched my skirt with both hands, unaware that the silver bracelet around her wrist had just turned an empire upside down.

Alessandro Moretti didn't blink.

His eyes never left Emma.

The photograph in his hand trembled ever so slightly.

A newborn.

Wrapped in white.

A silver bracelet engraved with the Moretti crest.

The exact same bracelet now resting on my daughter's wrist.

His voice came again, lower this time.

"...Answer me."

Every guest looked at me.

Bankers.

Politicians.

Judges.

People who normally bowed their heads whenever Alessandro entered a room.

Now every one of them stared at the nameless housekeeper standing beside the buffet table.

I swallowed.

"I... I don't know."

Vanessa laughed.

It was sharp.

Almost desperate.

"See? She's making this up."

She pointed toward me.

"Throw them both out."

Nobody moved.

Not even the guards.

Because Alessandro still hadn't taken his eyes off Emma.

"When did she receive that bracelet?"

"I..."

My throat tightened.

"I found her wearing it."

A wave of whispers swept across the ballroom.

Found?

What mother says she found her own child?

Alessandro heard it too.

His eyes narrowed.

"You found her?"

I nodded slowly.

"Three years ago."

Silence.

"I wasn't her birth mother."

The words felt heavier than anything I'd ever carried.

Emma looked up at me, confused.

"Mama?"

I knelt beside her immediately.

"You'll always be my little girl."

She smiled, satisfied with that answer.

The adults weren't.

Alessandro stepped closer.

Every instinct told me to step back.

I didn't.

"Tell me everything."

His voice held no anger.

Only something far more dangerous.

Hope.

...

Three years earlier...

I had been nineteen.

Working night shifts cleaning rooms at Saint Gabriel Medical Center.

No family.

No money.

No future.

One rainy November night, the hospital lost power for nearly twelve minutes.

Backup generators failed.

The maternity ward descended into chaos.

Nurses ran through dark hallways carrying flashlights.

Doctors shouted instructions.

Newborns cried from every direction.

Then I heard one cry that sounded...

Different.

Not louder.

Lonelier.

It came from a storage room that wasn't supposed to contain patients.

I opened the door.

Inside sat a bassinet.

No nurse.

No doctor.

No mother.

Only a tiny baby wrapped in expensive silk blankets.

And on her wrist...

A silver bracelet engraved with an unfamiliar crest.

The Moretti crest.

Of course, I hadn't known that back then.

I only knew one thing.

Someone had abandoned a newborn.

Beside the bassinet rested a folded note.

Just six words.

Protect her. Trust no one.

Nothing else.

No name.

No explanation.

Before I could call anyone, footsteps thundered down the hallway.

Men.

Not doctors.

Heavy boots.

Leather jackets.

Guns.

One shouted—

"Search every room!"

I froze.

Instinct screamed.

If those men found the baby...

Something terrible would happen.

I grabbed the bassinet.

Slipped through the emergency stairwell.

Ran.

Rain lashed my face as I emerged into the alley behind the hospital.

Sirens echoed in every direction.

Black SUVs blocked the front entrance.

Men carrying rifles poured inside.

I didn't stop running.

Not once.

By sunrise...

I had become the mother of a child who wasn't mine.

...

Back in the ballroom, no one dared interrupt.

Alessandro listened without moving.

When I finished, his jaw tightened.

"Saint Gabriel Hospital."

"Yes."

"What date?"

I answered.

His face changed.

Completely.

He turned toward one of his advisers.

"Luca."

The older man immediately pulled out his phone.

"Bring me every file from Saint Gabriel."

"Tonight."

"Every employee."

"Every security recording."

"If the recordings no longer exist..."

Luca nodded once.

"I understand."

Everyone in the ballroom understood what those words truly meant.

If evidence had disappeared...

Someone had made it disappear.

And Alessandro intended to find out who.

No matter how many bodies it took.

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

"This is ridiculous!"

She forced a laugh.

"A random hospital story proves nothing."

She looked toward the guests.

"Surely no one believes this fairy tale."

Again...

No one answered.

Because Alessandro was still staring at Emma.

Slowly...

Very slowly...

He crouched until he was eye level with her.

Emma blinked.

"You look sad."

Several guests gasped.

Nobody spoke to Alessandro Moretti like that.

Nobody.

Yet Emma simply reached into her little pocket.

Pulled out a tissue.

And offered it to him.

"For your tears."

The feared crime lord looked stunned.

"I..."

He hadn't even realized his eyes had become wet.

He accepted the tissue.

For the first time in years...

He smiled.

A genuine one.

Then Emma noticed the photograph still in his hand.

"That's me!"

She pointed excitedly.

"I was tiny!"

Alessandro's hands tightened around the picture.

"Who told you that?"

"Mama."

She pointed toward me.

"She says everybody starts tiny."

Several people quietly laughed.

Even Alessandro almost did.

Until Emma added one innocent sentence.

"The lady upstairs said I'm not supposed to be alive."

Everything froze again.

Vanessa's face turned white.

Alessandro rose slowly.

"What..."

His voice was terrifyingly calm.

"...did she say?"

Emma answered without fear.

"She said if I talked..."

The little girl frowned, trying to remember.

"...the bad doctor would come back."

Every drop of color drained from Vanessa's face.

"No..."

Emma continued.

"He has a snake tattoo."

Alessandro's eyes exploded with recognition.

Luca looked equally horrified.

Because every senior member of the Moretti organization knew exactly one man with a black serpent tattoo around his neck.

A doctor.

Officially dead.

Executed three years ago.

The man responsible for the disappearance of Alessandro's newborn daughter.

Dr. Victor Salazar.

But if Emma had seen him...

Then only one impossible conclusion remained.

The doctor they had buried...

Had never been the real Victor Salazar.

And somewhere in New York...

The real architect behind the stolen child was still alive.

At that exact moment, Luca's phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen.

His expression changed instantly.

"Boss..."

Alessandro looked at him.

"What?"

Luca swallowed.

"Our men just searched Vanessa's penthouse."

"What did they find?"

Luca hesitated.

Then spoke the words that turned the ballroom into a graveyard once again.

"They found a hidden nursery."

He paused.

"There are fresh toys."

"Fresh baby clothes."

"And..."

His voice nearly failed.

"...someone was living there until less than an hour ago."

The line went dead.

Then, from somewhere outside the mansion, three deafening explosions ripped through the night.

The ballroom windows shook violently.

Guests screamed.

Security drew their weapons.

Alessandro walked toward the shattered glass without a single trace of fear.

Outside, flames climbed into the New York sky.

One of the Moretti family's armored convoys had just exploded.

And painted across the burning vehicle, in blood-red spray paint, were six chilling words:

May you like

SHE WAS NEVER YOUR ONLY DAUGHTER.
