Chapter 15 - The Final Three KnocksThe floor gave way.

Sarah fell.

Nathan grabbed her wrist.

Lily caught Leo.

For several seconds the family hung above a black opening beneath the mansion.

Then concrete collapsed.

Everyone crashed into a chamber below.

Dust filled the air.

Sarah struggled to breathe.

Leo cried.

Nathan crawled toward them.

“Are you hurt?”

Sarah shook her head.

“Where is Lily?”

“Here!”

A voice came through the darkness.

They found Lily against a stone wall.

Behind her was a massive steel vault.

No doors.

No handles.

Only a single circular lock.

Sarah stared.

The silver key in Leo's hand began glowing under the emergency lights.

Nathan whispered:

“The archive.”

Sarah approached.

The lock had three small symbols.

One for Eleanor.

One for Nathan.

One for Sarah.

She understood.

“It needs three people.”

Nathan nodded.

“You.”

“Me.”

“Lily.”

The three stepped forward.

Sarah inserted the key.

Nathan placed his hand on the scanner.

Lily touched the final symbol.

The vault unlocked.

Inside were thousands of files.

Photographs.

Birth certificates.

Bank records.

Police reports.

Video tapes.

And one final folder.

Sarah opened it.

Her mother's voice came from a hidden speaker.

“If you're seeing this, then I didn't fail.”

Sarah began crying.

The recording continued.

“Eleanor believed power came from controlling the truth.”

“But the truth was never hers.”

Sarah looked at Nathan.

Then Lily.

“Your father gave me the archive because he knew someone had to end the cycle.”

Richard?

Sarah turned another page.

There was a photograph of her father.

Alive.

Standing beside her mother.

And holding baby Sarah.

On the back:

THE NIGHT SHE WAS BORN.

Sarah touched the photograph.

A tear fell onto it.

“He was alive.”

Nathan nodded.

“For years.”

“Where is he now?”

A voice answered from behind them.

“Right here.”

Everyone turned.

Richard Vale stepped out of the darkness.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Alive.

Sarah stared.

Her father looked at her.

For the first time in her life, she saw him face-to-face.

“Sarah.”

She couldn't move.

“You let me think you were dead.”

“I thought it would keep Eleanor away from you.”

“It didn't.”

“No.”

Richard looked at Leo.

“But it kept him alive.”

Sarah's mother stepped closer.

“The final file is his.”

Richard nodded.

He opened it.

Inside was a signed confession.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

Every crime.

Every fake death.

Every manipulated inheritance.

Every person Eleanor had disappeared.

And at the bottom…

two signatures.

Eleanor Walker.

And Daniel Walker.

Sarah looked at Daniel.

He was standing at the edge of the chamber.

He had followed them.

His face was wet with tears.

“I never signed that.”

Richard looked at him.

“You did.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I was eighteen.”

“Your signature was forged.”

Daniel stared.

“What?”

Eleanor's entire empire began to collapse in a single sentence.

She had forged her son's signature.

Controlled his accounts.

Manipulated his life.

Used him as another pawn.

Daniel sank to the floor.

Sarah stared at him.

“You were a victim too.”

Daniel looked up.

“I still hurt you.”

“Yes.”

“I still helped her.”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

“I'll answer for it.”

Outside the chamber, sirens grew louder.

Police had found the hidden entrance.

Margaret entered with Detective Cole.

He stared at the archive.

“This is enough.”

Sarah looked at the files.

“Enough for what?”

“To expose everything.”

Margaret held up the red ledger.

“The original evidence.”

Cole nodded.

“Every person involved.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Then a sound echoed through the chamber.

THUD.

Everyone froze.

Another.

THUD.

Sarah looked toward the tunnel.

Nathan went pale.

“No.”

The third knock came.

THUD.

Sarah whispered:

“Three knocks.”

Cole raised his weapon.

The tunnel door slowly opened.

A woman stood there.

Eleanor.

Blood ran down the side of her face.

She was holding one final object.

A small black box.

She looked at Sarah.

“You think you've won?”

Sarah stared.

“You're finished.”

Eleanor smiled.

“No.”

She lifted the box.

“Because you still don't know what was in the original recording.”

Sarah frowned.

“What?”

Eleanor pressed a button.

The speakers came alive.

Sarah's mother's voice filled the chamber.

But this time the recording was different.

It wasn't eleven years old.

It was from six months ago.

Sarah's mother said:

“Sarah…”

A pause.

Then:

“If you're hearing this, Eleanor has probably already told you who your real father is.”

Sarah looked at Richard.

He went pale.

Her mother's voice continued.

“But Richard is not your biological father.”

Sarah froze.

Nathan stared at Richard.

Lily stepped backward.

Richard whispered:

“No.”

Sarah turned toward him.

“Then who is?”

The recording continued.

“The man you believed was dead…”

A pause.

“He is the reason Eleanor was willing to kill everyone.”

Sarah's heartbeat thundered.

The speaker crackled.

Then came the final sentence.

“Your real father is still inside Aster House.”

Sarah slowly looked around the chamber.

Everyone was silent.

Nathan.

Lily.

Richard.

Daniel.

Margaret.

Even Eleanor.

Then the lights went out.

One final sound echoed through the darkness.

A man's voice.

Very close.

“Sarah…”

She froze.

“I've been waiting for you.”

The lights came back on.

The chamber was empty.

Eleanor was gone.

And on the floor where she had been standing lay a single photograph.

Sarah picked it up.

The photograph showed the entire family…

taken twenty-three years earlier.

Everyone was there.

Everyone except one man.

A man whose face had been deliberately scratched out.

On the back, four words had been written in fresh ink:

THREE KNOCKS. THEN RUN.

Sarah looked toward the tunnel.

From somewhere beyond the darkness came the sound again.

THUD.

THUD.

THUD.

And this time…

May you like

the door did not open.

Something on the other side was waiting for her to open it.
