Chapter 14 - Sarah's MotherSarah could not process the words.

Her mother.
Alive?
The woman she'd buried.
The woman whose death had shaped every decision she'd ever made.
“No.”
Nathan held Leo tighter.
“She was forced to disappear.”
“You said she died.”
“I said she couldn't come back.”
Sarah's voice broke.
“You lied.”
“I protected you.”
“Everyone says that!”
She shouted.
“Everyone lies to me and calls it protection!”
Nathan lowered his eyes.
“I know.”
A door slammed above them.
Footsteps.
Fast.
Lily appeared at the ladder.
“She's here.”
Sarah turned.
“Who?”
Lily looked terrified.
“Your mother.”
A figure appeared in the doorway.
Sarah stopped breathing.
The woman looked older.
Gray hair.
Thin face.
A scar on her cheek.
But Sarah knew her.
She had seen photographs.
She had dreamed of her.
“Mom?”
The woman covered her mouth.
“Sarah.”
Sarah stepped backward.
“You died.”
“I had to.”
“You let me bury you.”
“I had no choice.”
Sarah's tears came instantly.
“I needed you.”
Her mother cried.
“I know.”
She approached.
Sarah didn't move.
“Why?”
“Because Eleanor had Leo's future in her hands.”
“She stole him.”
“She would have killed him.”
Sarah looked toward Nathan.
“And you?”
Her mother nodded.
“I knew where Nathan was.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because Richard told me Eleanor had another plan.”
“What plan?”
Her mother looked at Daniel.
“To make you marry him.”
Sarah froze.
Daniel looked away.
“She wanted the bloodline tied together.”
“To control the inheritance.”
“Yes.”
Sarah felt sick.
“My entire marriage…”
“Was built around you.”
Daniel whispered:
“I did love you.”
Sarah looked at him.
“I don't know what love means anymore.”
Her mother took a breath.
“There's one more truth.”
Sarah stared.
“What?”
“Eleanor did not start this.”
Nathan looked at her.
“Don't.”
But Sarah's mother continued.
“She inherited it.”
“From whom?”
“Your grandfather.”
Sarah frowned.
James?
Her mother nodded.
“Not James.”
She looked toward Nathan.
“His father.”
Sarah understood.
A generation before Eleanor, the family had created a secret network of false identities, bribed police, manipulated inheritances, and erased inconvenient heirs.
Eleanor had only inherited it.
But she had expanded it.
“Why was Leo chosen?”
Her mother pointed toward the silver key.
“Because the legal trust activates only when the Walker bloodline is reunited.”
Sarah looked at Nathan.
Then Lily.
Then Leo.
“And what happens then?”
Her mother whispered:
“The archive opens.”
A sound came from upstairs.
Police shouting.
Then a woman's voice.
Eleanor.
“You're all idiots!”
Sarah looked toward the ceiling.
Her mother grabbed her hand.
“We have to go.”
“Why?”
“Because Eleanor has one last weapon.”
“What?”
Her mother looked directly at Sarah.
“She knows where your father is.”
Sarah froze.
“My father?”
“Richard.”
“He died.”
Her mother shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at Nathan.
“Richard is alive too.”
The house went silent.
Then all the doors in the mansion locked simultaneously.
A mechanical voice came through the speakers.
“ASTER HOUSE SECURITY ACTIVATED.”
Sarah looked around.
Red lights illuminated the corridor.
A screen appeared.
Eleanor's face filled it.
She smiled.
“You wanted the truth?”
Sarah stared.
Eleanor held up a detonator.
“Then let's bury it together.”
Nathan stood.
“No!”
Eleanor pressed a button.
The walls shook.
Explosions thundered beneath the house.
The floor cracked.
Sarah grabbed Leo.
Lily screamed.
And from somewhere below…
came the sound of dozens of locks opening.
Eleanor smiled on the screen.
“You should have left the dead buried.”
Then the transmission ended.
Sarah looked at the collapsing floor.
Something enormous was opening beneath them.
May you like
And whatever was down there…
had been waiting for them for eleven years.
