Chapter 12 - The Last RecordingFirefighters entered through the western entrance.

The flames were spreading fast.

Sarah refused to leave.

“My mother made a recording.”

Detective Cole grabbed her shoulder.

“You can't stay here.”

“She said there was evidence.”

“We'll find it.”

“No.”

Sarah looked at Leo.

“It's about him.”

Cole hesitated.

Then Daniel said:

“I know where she put it.”

Sarah turned.

“Where?”

Daniel pointed toward the nursery.

“In the wall.”

The same wall where Sarah had found the phone.

They ran.

The house shook from the fire.

Smoke crawled along the ceiling.

Daniel ripped open the hidden panel.

Inside was a small metal case.

Sarah grabbed it.

No lock.

No key.

Just a fingerprint scanner.

She stared.

“How?”

Daniel looked at Leo.

“Probably him.”

Sarah placed Leo's tiny hand against the scanner.

Nothing.

She tried again.

A green light appeared.

The box opened.

Inside was a cassette tape.

One label.

FOR MY DAUGHTER.

Sarah nearly dropped it.

She knew instantly.

Her mother had made it for her.

They found an old player in the archive room.

Margaret inserted the tape.

Static.

Then her mother's voice.

Sarah stopped breathing.

“Sarah…”

She closed her eyes.

“I don't know when you'll hear this.”

Her mother's voice trembled.

“If you're listening, then Eleanor failed to erase everything.”

Sarah began crying.

“Listen carefully.”

A pause.

“Your father did not kill me.”

Sarah opened her eyes.

Everyone looked at Daniel.

The recording continued.

“Richard tried to protect me.”

Sarah stared at Cole.

“He gave me access to the archive.”

“He helped me hide the children.”

Sarah's throat tightened.

“Children?”

Her mother continued.

“I gave birth to two babies.”

“But one was never registered.”

Sarah looked at Leo.

“One belonged to Richard.”

“His name is…”

Static swallowed the rest.

Sarah shook the machine.

“No.”

The recording resumed.

“…Nathan.”

Sarah's face went blank.

Daniel whispered:

“That means…”

Margaret looked at him.

“Yes.”

Leo was Richard's grandson.

But Nathan…

Nathan was his son.

Sarah suddenly understood.

Her mother had been pregnant.

One child belonged to Richard.

The second…

was part of a different bloodline.

The recording continued.

“Eleanor knows about Nathan.”

“She wants him dead.”

“And she wants Leo because he is the only legal bridge between the Vale and Walker estates.”

Sarah stared.

“Then why did Eleanor say Daniel wasn't his father?”

Her mother's voice answered.

“Because he isn't.”

A pause.

“The child's father is Nathan Walker.”

Silence.

Sarah couldn't breathe.

Daniel staggered backward.

“No.”

Margaret looked at Sarah.

“Then Leo is…”

James whispered:

“Nathan's son.”

Sarah's entire body shook.

But the recording wasn't finished.

“Sarah, there is something I couldn't tell you.”

“If Nathan is alive, then…”

Static.

A crash.

Then another voice.

Eleanor.

Young.

Close.

“Give me the child.”

Sarah froze.

Her mother's voice screamed:

“No!”

A struggle.

Then a man's voice.

Daniel's father.

“Eleanor, stop!”

A gunshot.

The tape went silent.

Sarah stared.

Then another recording began automatically.

A different timestamp.

Eleven years ago.

A man's voice whispered:

“She doesn't know.”

Another voice answered.

“Neither will the boy.”

Then the sound of a door closing.

And the final sentence:

“Evelyn is not the other child.”

Sarah's face went white.

“What?”

The recording continued.

“Evelyn was taken years before Sarah was born.”

Margaret stared at the floor.

Daniel looked terrified.

Sarah whispered:

“Then who is Leo's twin?”

The machine clicked.

A final file appeared.

A photograph loaded on a nearby monitor.

Two newborn babies.

One was Leo.

The other was…

a little girl.

Underneath her photograph was a name.

LILY WALKER.

Sarah stopped breathing.

And from upstairs…

a woman screamed.

“Sarah!”

A voice she had never heard before.

“Please!”

May you like

Then:

“I'm your sister.”
