Chapter 9 - We returned to my house just before sunrise.Nobody spoke.

The silence felt heavier than shouting.

I walked directly to the study.

Daniel followed.

“You think the ledger is still here.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because my husband knew them.”

I touched the wall.

“He built this room himself.”

Daniel nodded.

“What are you looking for?”

“A place they would overlook.”

I remembered my husband's habits.

He trusted physical objects.

Paper.

Wood.

Locks.

He hated computers.

I opened an old cabinet.

Nothing.

Pulled books from the shelves.

Nothing.

Then I noticed the fireplace.

The brick pattern was uneven.

One brick was slightly recessed.

I pressed it.

A panel clicked.

Daniel stepped back.

Inside was a narrow compartment.

Empty.

Except for a key.

Stamped with two letters.

RH.

Richard Hale.

Daniel stared at it.

“He hid something for Richard.”

“No.”

I turned the key over.

“There was another compartment.”

“How do you know?”

“Because my husband always hid a spare key for the spare key.”

I smiled sadly.

“That was him.”

Behind the fireplace was another small lockbox.

The key fit.

Inside was a flash drive.

And a handwritten note.

I read it aloud.

Margaret, if Richard ever asks for this, do not give it to him.

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“What's on the drive?”

We connected it to a laptop.

One folder.

PROJECT WILLOW.

Inside were hundreds of files.

Bank records.

Photographs.

Audio recordings.

Names.

Politicians.

Judges.

Police officers.

Business owners.

It wasn't an embezzlement scheme.

It was a network.

My husband had been documenting corruption throughout the county.

And the people trying to take my house were only one piece of it.

Daniel scrolled.

Then stopped.

“There.”

A folder.

RICHARD HALE.

Inside was a recording.

Richard's voice.

“We need the property.”

Another voice answered.

“Margaret won't sell.”

“Then convince her son.”

“She trusts him.”

“Good.”

I felt sick.

The recording was dated six years ago.

Two years after my husband died.

They had been planning this for years.

Then another voice spoke.

“Marcus wants revenge.”

Richard replied,

“Let him have it.”

The recording ended.

Daniel looked at me.

“That's your proof.”

“No.”

I pointed at another file.

“What's that?”

A video.

The screen showed my husband.

Alive.

Sitting at the same desk.

He looked directly into the camera.

“If Margaret is watching this, I failed to stop them.”

My breath caught.

“I don't know how long I have.”

He paused.

“Wesley will be approached.”

I looked at my son.

His face was pale.

“He will be told that the only way to protect this family is to cooperate.”

I whispered,

“He knew.”

The video continued.

“Don't blame him immediately.”

Wesley's eyes filled with tears.

“He is being manipulated.”

My husband looked exhausted.

“But there is one person I absolutely do not trust.”

He leaned closer.

“Cora.”

Wesley froze.

The room went silent.

My husband's voice continued.

“She has been communicating with Richard.”

Wesley staggered backward.

“No.”

A second file opened automatically.

An email archive.

Dozens of messages between Cora and Richard.

I watched Wesley read them.

Every line erased another piece of him.

Cora had been sending financial information.

Property records.

My medical appointments.

My bank activity.

Even family photographs.

She had been tracking me for years.

“She used you,” I whispered.

Wesley didn't move.

He looked like a man watching his life collapse in real time.

Then his phone rang.

Cora.

He answered.

“Where are you?”

She didn't respond immediately.

Then she whispered,

“Wesley, listen to me.”

“You lied to me.”

“I did what I had to.”

“Where is my family?”

Silence.

“Cora?”

She finally said,

“Your mother shouldn't have found the drive.”

My heart stopped.

“How do you know about the drive?”

Her voice went quiet.

“Because I'm standing outside her house.”

We turned toward the window.

A car sat across the street.

Cora's Mercedes.

Its engine was running.

Then she sent one final message.

Come outside alone, Wesley.

A second later, another message arrived.

A photograph.

Emily's son.

May you like

Alive.

Cora was holding him.
