Chapter 11 - At 11:40 p.m., I walked into the courthouse alone. At least, that was what Cora believed.

The building was almost empty.
The marble halls amplified every footstep.
I carried a leather case.
Inside were copies of the trust documents.
The real documents were somewhere else.
I reached the courtroom.
The door was open.
Cora stood near the judge's bench.
Richard Hale was beside her.
Marcus was in the back.
And Emily's son sat in a chair.
His hands were bound.
My heart nearly broke.
But I kept walking.
Cora smiled.
“You came.”
“Let him go.”
“Show me the documents.”
I placed the case on the table.
Richard opened it.
He smiled.
“Everything seems to be here.”
“You're wrong.”
He looked at me.
“What?”
“These are copies.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“Where are the originals?”
“Safe.”
Richard's smile disappeared.
“You misunderstand your position.”
“No.”
I looked around the courtroom.
“You misunderstand yours.”
He glanced at Cora.
She nodded.
Marcus moved toward me.
“Where are they?”
“You're going to answer one question first.”
Richard laughed.
“You don't have the power to negotiate.”
I smiled.
“I have fourteen million dollars.”
Everyone froze.
Marcus's expression changed.
Richard looked at me.
“You found it.”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Somewhere you'll never reach.”
He stepped closer.
“You have no idea what you've uncovered.”
“I know exactly what you did.”
I opened the leather case.
Inside was a small recorder.
I pressed PLAY.
Richard's own voice filled the courtroom.
“We need the property.”
Cora turned pale.
Another recording.
Marcus's voice.
“Margaret can't know.”
Another.
Wesley's voice.
“I'll handle my mother.”
The recordings continued.
Every secret.
Every lie.
Every conversation.
Richard looked at the ceiling.
“You recorded us.”
“No.”
I smiled.
“My husband did.”
Richard stared at the recorder.
Then something changed in his face.
Fear.
“You've made a mistake.”
“What?”
“You don't know who else is involved.”
“I don't need to.”
“Why?”
“Because they already know.”
Suddenly the courtroom lights turned on.
Police officers entered.
Daniel stepped through the main doors.
Behind him were investigators from the state financial crimes unit.
Richard stepped backward.
Cora stared at Wesley, who entered from the side hallway.
“You lied to me.”
Wesley shook his head.
“You lied to everyone.”
Cora looked at Emily.
“Your son—”
Emily ran to him.
An officer cut the restraints.
The boy rushed into his mother's arms.
Cora began crying.
“It wasn't supposed to happen like this.”
I looked at her.
“You chose this.”
She shook her head.
“They threatened Wesley.”
I glanced at my son.
Cora continued.
“They said they'd destroy him.”
“You still betrayed us.”
“I was trying to save him.”
I stared into her eyes.
“Then why did you help them steal my house?”
She broke down.
“Because Richard promised us everything would disappear.”
“What would disappear?”
“The debt.”
I turned to Richard.
“You promised them money.”
He smiled bitterly.
“You still haven't figured it out.”
“Figured what out?”
“You think the fourteen million is yours.”
I frowned.
“It belongs to the trust.”
Richard shook his head.
“No.”
He stepped closer.
“It belongs to the people who funded your husband's investigation.”
Daniel stiffened.
“What?”
Richard laughed.
“Your husband wasn't working alone.”
“Who funded him?”
Richard looked at me.
“Your husband was part of something much larger.”
Before anyone could stop him, Richard pulled a hidden knife.
He lunged toward me.
Daniel tackled him.
The courtroom erupted.
And in the chaos, Marcus disappeared.
Emily screamed.
“He's gone!”
I looked toward the back door.
Marcus was running.
And he had the trust documents.
The real ones.
He had stolen them from my purse without me noticing.
Now he had everything he needed.
Or so he thought.
Because I had deliberately let him take them.
May you like
And the documents he was carrying contained a trap.
A clause my husband had written specifically for him.
