Chapter 12 - Marcus drove north. He didn't know we were tracking him.

Daniel had placed a transmitter inside the document folder.

The signal moved across the map.

“Where is he going?”

Daniel frowned.

“Old Carter estate.”

“My father's property?”

Wesley nodded.

“There was another house.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“Dad sold it years ago.”

“No.”

Wesley looked confused.

“What?”

“He didn't sell it.”

Daniel checked the address.

“He transferred it.”

“To whom?”

Silence.

Then we realized.

“Marcus.”

The old estate had been sitting empty for decades.

And it had belonged to my husband's secret family.

Marcus arrived at 2:13 a.m.

We reached the property twenty minutes later.

The front door was open.

Inside, everything was covered in dust.

Except one room.

The basement.

We descended.

Marcus stood at the center.

The trust documents were spread across a table.

He looked at me.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“You let me steal them.”

“Yes.”

He laughed.

“You think you're clever.”

“No.”

I pointed toward the documents.

“My husband was.”

Marcus's smile disappeared.

He looked down.

The final page contained a clause.

Any attempt by the unauthorized beneficiary to claim control of the trust automatically transfers all concealed assets to the state fraud recovery fund.

Marcus's face changed.

“No.”

He tore the page.

Nothing happened.

Daniel stepped forward.

“The transfer was already recorded.”

Marcus backed away.

“You don't understand.”

“I understand enough.”

Marcus looked at me.

“You took everything from my father.”

I stared.

“Your father?”

“You became his wife.”

“He loved me.”

“You took his house.”

“He built that house with me.”

“You took his money.”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“Your father left because he discovered you existed.”

Marcus's face twisted.

“He abandoned us.”

“No.”

My voice softened.

“He wanted to meet you.”

Marcus froze.

“What?”

I opened another document.

A letter.

Written eight years earlier.

Addressed to Marcus.

I am your father. I have known about you for years. I am sorry. I want to make things right.

Marcus stared.

“He never sent it.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

“Because he died before he could.”

Marcus looked at the letter.

Then suddenly began to cry.

Not loudly.

Just one broken breath.

For a moment, the anger left his face.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

A voice spoke.

Marcus froze.

“No.”

He looked at me.

“You set me up.”

The voice continued.

Marcus lowered the phone.

“What?”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Who was it?”

Marcus looked at him.

“Richard.”

“But he's under arrest.”

“I know.”

Daniel's face changed.

“Then he's not alone.”

Marcus swallowed.

“He told me to come here.”

“Why?”

“Because he said there was another file.”

“What file?”

Marcus pointed toward a steel cabinet.

“Your husband's final record.”

We opened it.

Inside was a folder marked:

PROJECT WILLOW: PHASE 2

I opened it.

The first page contained one name.

WESLEY CARTER.

My heart stopped.

Under the name was a photograph.

Wesley as a child.

Then another.

Wesley as a teenager.

Then one from the year before.

A note appeared beneath it:

SUBJECT PREPARED FOR RECRUITMENT.

I looked at my son.

“What is this?”

Wesley stared at the file.

“I don't know.”

Daniel turned another page.

There were records of payments made to Wesley's account.

Starting when he was eighteen.

Small amounts.

Then larger.

Then enormous.

Wesley shook his head.

“I never knew.”

I believed him.

But the next page changed everything.

It showed a letter.

Written in Wesley's handwriting.

Dated two years before.

It said:

I will make sure my mother signs.

I looked at him.

His face collapsed.

“I didn't write that.”

Daniel examined it.

“It's a copy.”

“Of what?”

“Someone forged Wesley's handwriting.”

I exhaled.

Then I noticed one more detail.

A fingerprint on the page.

Daniel scanned it.

His face turned pale.

“What?”

He looked at me.

“It's Cora's.”

Wesley closed his eyes.

Then Marcus whispered,

“She wasn't working for Richard.”

I turned.

“Then who?”

Marcus looked toward the basement door.

“The person above Richard.”

“What person?”

He swallowed.

“Your husband's old business partner.”

Daniel went still.

“He's dead.”

Marcus shook his head.

“No.”

He smiled bitterly.

“He's alive.”

Then a voice echoed from upstairs.

“Very much alive.”

We all turned.

The basement door slowly opened.

May you like

And standing at the top of the stairs was my husband's former partner.

The man I had watched lower his coffin into the ground.
