Chapter 7 - The lights came back.Nobody was there.

Except my father.

Daniel.

And me.

But the voice had changed everything.

My father looked furious.

“How did he get into the system?”

Daniel shook his head.

“He didn't.”

Dad stared.

“Then how?”

Daniel looked at the security monitors.

Every camera showed the same image.

A black room.

A chair.

A man's silhouette.

No face.

Only his voice.

Anthony Hart.

The Architect.

The recording began again.

“Michael, you raised my daughter well.”

Dad's hands curled into fists.

“Don't call her yours.”

A soft laugh.

“I never did.”

The screen changed.

A photograph appeared.

My mother.

Pregnant.

Beside her stood a young man.

Anthony Hart.

I stared.

“My mother knew him.”

Dad nodded.

“She loved him.”

The next image was a hospital record.

A birth certificate.

The father's name had been digitally blacked out.

But I could see the first letters.

A.

H.

Anthony Hart.

Then the final photograph.

A baby.

Me.

Held by my mother.

And standing beside her was Michael Carter.

I looked at my father.

“You took me.”

“Yes.”

“You knew he was my father.”

“Yes.”

“And you lied for twenty years.”

“Yes.”

The simplicity of his answers hurt more than denial.

“Why?”

“Because Anthony Hart wasn't just a criminal.”

My father paused.

“He was a strategist.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means every person in this room, every company, every politician, every rival family could be part of one plan.”

I looked at the screen.

Anthony spoke again.

“Your father gave you a choice, Lena.”

“I thought Michael was my father.”

“No.”

His voice became colder.

“Michael was your guardian.”

The screen showed a map of Chicago.

Red dots appeared.

Banks.

Warehouses.

Hotels.

Political offices.

Hospitals.

Even the Bellweather Grand.

Anthony said:

“I built an empire without ever owning the streets.”

Then another map appeared.

This one showed the Carter organization.

And the Hale organization.

Both were connected.

Both were being controlled by a network centered around one company.

Hart Holdings.

I felt sick.

“You controlled both families.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because your mother discovered it.”

The screen froze.

Then a photograph appeared.

My mother.

Holding a folder.

Next to her was Ethan.

“Ethan discovered the files.”

I turned.

My brother stood near the door.

He looked at the screen.

“You knew?”

He nodded.

“I found them years ago.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I wasn't sure who would kill you first.”

The screen went black.

Then the voice returned.

“Tonight, Lena, I am giving you the truth.”

A pause.

“Tomorrow, I'm asking you for a favor.”

“What favor?”

“Choose which family survives.”

The system shut down.

My father immediately ordered every server disconnected.

I stood there.

“What happens tomorrow?”

He looked at me.

“The war begins.”

I shook my head.

“It already began.”

“No.”

He looked toward the dark windows.

“Tomorrow is when they stop pretending it hasn't.”

At dawn, the first explosion hit downtown.

Then another.

And another.

News helicopters filled the sky.

My father's men rushed into the room.

“Three Carter warehouses hit.”

“Two Hale properties burned.”

“Federal investigators just raided Hart Holdings.”

“Someone leaked financial records.”

Daniel turned on the television.

Every screen showed the same headline.

CHICAGO CRIME DYNASTIES COLLAPSE AS SECRET BILLION-DOLLAR NETWORK EXPOSED

Then my own photograph appeared.

The one from the ballroom.

Wine covering my face.

Below it:

MYSTERY HEIRESS LINKED TO HART EMPIRE

I stared.

Someone had made me the center of the story.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice whispered:

“Your father is going to blame Ethan.”

I looked at my brother.

Then the voice continued.

“And Ethan is going to blame your mother.”

“Who are you?”

The voice laughed.

“I'm the reason neither of them has told you the truth.”

The call ended.

A new photograph arrived.

Ethan.

Standing beside a burning warehouse.

Holding a gun.

Time-stamped twenty minutes earlier.

He hadn't left the room.

I looked at him.

He looked at me.

“What is that?”

Ethan's face went pale.

“I wasn't there.”

My father looked at the photograph.

Then at his son.

For the first time since I had met Ethan, I saw fear in his eyes.

“Someone is framing him.”

Daniel nodded.

“And whoever it is has access to our entire system.”

My father looked at me.

“Lena.”

“What?”

He pointed toward the photograph.

“That's not Ethan.”

I stared.

The image looked exactly like him.

Same hair.

Same face.

Same scar.

But then I noticed the hand.

The ring was missing.

My father's ring.

The Carter ring.

Ethan was wearing it.

The man in the photograph wasn't.

Then the screen flickered.

May you like

A final message appeared.

THERE ARE TWO ETHANS.
