Chapter 14 - We had minutes.Not hours.

Minutes.
Thomas now controlled the legal machinery surrounding the trust.
The fake signature had been accepted.
My arrest had been canceled.
My assets had been frozen.
And every major news outlet was reporting that I had been at the scene of Victor Hale's murder.
Exactly as planned.
We escaped through the hotel service elevator.
My father joined us in the underground garage.
He had arrived alone.
No guards.
No convoy.
That frightened me more than anything.
“What happened?” I asked.
He looked at me.
“They took everyone.”
“Who?”
“Thomas.”
“Your entire organization?”
“Yes.”
I stared.
“How?”
“Through the banks.”
He handed me a phone.
Every Carter account had been frozen.
Every business.
Every property.
Every vehicle.
Everything.
My father had spent decades building an empire.
In ten minutes, it disappeared.
Or appeared to.
Daniel studied the screen.
“This isn't just a financial attack.”
“What?”
“They're consolidating.”
“Into what?”
He zoomed in.
A company.
HART GLOBAL HOLDINGS.
I stared.
“It's the trust.”
Daniel nodded.
“The entire Carter and Hale network is being absorbed.”
My father looked at me.
“And you're the legal key.”
“So Thomas wants me.”
“Yes.”
“And if I die?”
“He gets everything.”
“What if I refuse?”
“He can't activate the final transfer.”
I looked at him.
“Then why fake my signature?”
“Because he needs only one more step.”
“What?”
“Your voluntary confirmation.”
I frowned.
“He needs me to agree.”
“Yes.”
“He'll never get that.”
My father looked at me.
“He knows.”
I turned.
“What?”
“He knows you won't agree.”
“Then why?”
“Because he's not trying to convince you.”
He looked at Daniel.
“He's going to make you choose.”
The screen changed.
Live video.
My mother.
Ethan.
Daniel.
All captured.
Thomas appeared.
An elderly man in a gray suit.
Calm.
Almost frail.
He sat behind a desk.
“I've watched you all run for twenty years.”
His voice was soft.
“Enough.”
He placed three photographs on the desk.
My mother.
Ethan.
My father.
“All three die if you refuse.”
I stared.
Thomas smiled.
“But you can save one.”
My chest tightened.
“You'll choose.”
My father whispered:
“Don't.”
Thomas continued.
“You have ten minutes.”
A timer appeared.
09:59.
09:58.
I looked at the three photographs.
My mother.
My brother.
My father.
I couldn't breathe.
Thomas leaned closer.
“Blood is irrelevant.”
The timer continued.
“Love is irrelevant.”
He smiled.
“Only choice matters.”
Then the feed split into three screens.
My mother was locked in a steel room.
Ethan was chained inside a warehouse.
My father was sitting alone in a room with a gas pipe.
The timer reached 08:30.
I looked at Daniel.
“Can you find them?”
“Yes.”
“How many?”
“Three.”
“We need to move now.”
My father grabbed my arm.
“Lena.”
I turned.
“Whatever happens, don't give him the trust.”
“Dad…”
“If I die, you walk away.”
“No.”
“Listen.”
He looked into my eyes.
“Your life is worth more than this empire.”
I stared at him.
Then something clicked.
Thomas had said:
Blood is irrelevant.
Love is irrelevant.
Only choice matters.
But the trust wasn't built on blood.
It was built on choice.
I suddenly understood the hidden clause.
The Hart Protocol required the heir to voluntarily recognize the transfer.
Not because of blood.
Because of consent.
Thomas couldn't force the final signature.
He needed me to choose.
So I made my choice.
“We're not going to save them.”
Everyone stared.
“We're going to destroy the trust.”
Daniel looked at me.
“Can you?”
“I don't know.”
My father smiled for the first time.
“That sounds like my daughter.”
We found the first location.
My mother.
She was surrounded by men.
Daniel disabled the power.
My father entered.
Ten seconds later, the building erupted.
Ethan was next.
Then my father.
Each time, the timer dropped.
00:42.
00:41.
00:40.
We reached the final room.
I stood before Thomas's security door.
Thirty seconds.
He appeared on a screen.
“You think you've won.”
“No.”
I said.
“I think you made one mistake.”
“What?”
“You underestimated the person you kidnapped twenty years ago.”
I pulled the key from Room 1704.
The one Thomas had given me.
His face changed.
“That key wasn't for the trust.”
I smiled.
“No.”
I inserted it.
A hidden server room opened beneath the building.
Inside was the original Hart Protocol.
Thomas's face went pale.
“You can't.”
“I can.”
The system asked one question.
HEIR AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.
I looked at my mother.
Then my father.
Then Ethan.
Then I pressed the button.
TRANSFER: REVOKED.
The screen went red.
Thomas screamed.
“No!”
Every document vanished.
Every transfer.
Every frozen account.
Everything returned to its original state.
The empire was destroyed.
But the trust was gone.
I had won.
Or so I thought.
The screen flickered.
A final file appeared.
One sentence.
PRIMARY HEIR REJECTED. SECONDARY HEIR ACTIVATED.
I stared.
“Secondary heir?”
Thomas smiled.
Even now.
Even trapped.
He smiled.
“Your father never told you.”
The screen revealed a name.
ETHAN HART CARTER.
I turned toward my brother.
He looked as shocked as I was.
May you like
Then Thomas spoke one final sentence.
“And now, Lena, you need to ask yourself why your brother was born eight years before you were.”
