Chapter 11 - My mother grabbed my hand and pulled me through the passage.Daniel followed.

My father came last.

The tunnel was narrow and cold.

“Where are we going?”

“Somewhere Anthony can't reach.”

“Does such a place exist?”

She looked at me.

“Not for long.”

We reached an old subway platform beneath the city.

A black car waited.

We climbed inside.

My mother sat beside me.

For several minutes, she didn't speak.

Then she touched my face.

“You look like I remember.”

I swallowed.

“I don't remember you.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

“Because I made sure you wouldn't.”

I stared.

“You erased my memories?”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I buried the memories.”

“How?”

“When you were six, Anthony found us.”

My mother looked down.

“He wanted you back.”

“Why?”

“Because you were the key.”

“To the trust?”

“No.”

She took a breath.

“To him.”

I frowned.

“You were never meant to inherit his empire.”

“Then why?”

“Anthony has a disease.”

I started to speak.

She stopped me.

“Not an excuse. A fact.”

She looked toward the window.

“He knew he wouldn't live forever.”

“What does that have to do with me?”

“He created something called the Hart Protocol.”

Daniel went silent.

My father looked grim.

“What is it?”

“A legal and financial structure that allows one person to control dozens of companies through one biological heir.”

I understood.

“Me.”

“Yes.”

My mother nodded.

“You are the only legal trigger.”

“That's why everyone wants me.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did Anthony disappear?”

“Because he wanted to see whether Michael could raise you without turning you into him.”

I stared at my father.

“He tested you.”

Dad looked away.

“And did you pass?”

My mother answered.

“Yes.”

I looked at her.

“Then why are we still running?”

“Because Anthony never trusted Michael.”

The car stopped.

We entered an old mansion on the edge of the lake.

My mother locked every door.

Then she gave me a second box.

Inside was a videotape.

“Watch it.”

We put it into an old player.

The screen showed Anthony.

Twenty years younger.

He stood beside my mother.

“She will be born tonight.”

My mother smiled.

Anthony touched her stomach.

“Our daughter will change Chicago.”

The video skipped.

Another clip.

Anthony yelling.

“You betrayed me.”

My mother screamed back.

“I saved her.”

The screen went black.

Then a new recording.

Michael.

He sat alone.

“I took Lena because there was no other way.”

My mother's voice answered.

“You promised not to tell her.”

“I won't.”

“Until?”

“Until Anthony is gone.”

The recording ended.

I looked at my father.

“He's not dead.”

“No.”

“Then you never planned to tell me.”

He nodded.

“Not until you were safe.”

I laughed bitterly.

“I've never been safe.”

My mother reached for my hand.

“Neither were we.”

A loud crash came from upstairs.

Everyone froze.

Daniel moved toward the door.

Then footsteps.

Someone was inside.

Dad drew his weapon.

My mother whispered:

“That's not Anthony.”

The door burst open.

Ethan appeared.

Blood covered his shirt.

“Go.”

My mother stood.

“Where's the other one?”

Ethan shook his head.

“He's here.”

“Who?”

He looked at me.

“The double.”

A second Ethan stepped into the doorway.

Same face.

Same voice.

Same scar.

But different eyes.

He smiled.

“Hello, sister.”

I stepped back.

My father raised his weapon.

The double held up a hand.

“I didn't come to kill you.”

“Then why?”

He smiled.

“Because Anthony has been lying to all of you.”

My mother went pale.

The double continued.

“He isn't my father.”

Ethan stared.

“What?”

The double looked at me.

“Neither is Anthony.”

I froze.

“What are you talking about?”

The double reached into his coat.

Pulled out a photograph.

A woman.

Not my mother.

Not anyone I had ever seen.

She was standing beside Anthony.

And in her arms was an infant.

Me.

He whispered:

“Your real mother is alive.”

My mother closed her eyes.

“Don't.”

The double smiled.

May you like

“Her name is Isabel Hart.”

Then the lights went out.
