Chapter 8: Adrian Black’s Shadow Empire and Charlotte’s First Counterattack

The name stayed in Charlotte’s mind long after Evelyn left.

Adrian Black.

A name she had never heard before.

A man who supposedly existed above Richard Blackwood.

A man who had been hiding behind the entire operation.

Charlotte stood alone in the garden, staring at the empty pathway where her aunt had disappeared.

For months, she believed she understood the enemy.

Richard Blackwood.

The man who smiled at her family while preparing to steal everything.

Marcus Vale.

The uncle who carried the same blood but chose greed over loyalty.

Daniel Cross.

The executive who helped move money away from the empire.

She had thought she was fighting a group of people who wanted control.

But now she realized something much darker.

They were not the architects.

They were pieces.

Someone else had been moving them across the board.

And that person had been watching her return from the shadows.

Charlotte returned to Solmere Headquarters that afternoon.

The building felt different.

Not because anything had changed physically.

The glass walls still reflected the city.

The elevators still carried executives between floors.

Employees still walked quickly through the lobby.

But Charlotte saw everything differently now.

She was no longer looking for thieves.

She was looking for the person who taught them how to steal.

When she entered the executive floor, her assistant approached immediately.

“Miss Vale.”

Charlotte stopped.

“Yes?”

“There is something you should know.”

The assistant looked nervous.

“Several board members have requested an emergency meeting.”

Charlotte raised an eyebrow.

“About what?”

“They believe the company is facing instability because of the investigation.”

Of course.

The moment corruption was exposed, the corrupt people always called it a crisis.

Charlotte nodded.

“Schedule the meeting.”

“When?”

“Now.”

The assistant hesitated.

“Now?”

Charlotte looked toward the conference room.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“The longer people have to prepare their lies, the better their lies become.”

The board meeting began thirty minutes later.

This time, Charlotte noticed something.

The room was divided.

Some members avoided Richard’s eyes.

Some avoided hers.

Some were waiting to see who would win.

Power always attracted spectators.

People rarely chose a side until they knew which side was standing at the end.

Richard entered last.

As usual.

He wanted everyone to notice.

He sat across from Charlotte.

“You called this meeting quickly.”

Charlotte opened a folder.

“I believe urgent situations require urgent decisions.”

Richard smiled.

“Such as?”

“Such as removing uncertainty.”

A few board members looked confused.

Charlotte placed a document on the table.

“This morning, I received confirmation from our legal department.”

Richard watched carefully.

“What confirmation?”

Charlotte looked around the room.

“Solmere Holdings has the right to immediately suspend any executive under investigation for financial misconduct.”

Silence.

Daniel Cross shifted in his seat.

Richard noticed.

Charlotte noticed too.

Good.

Fear revealed people faster than evidence.

Richard leaned forward.

“Are you suggesting suspending executives based only on suspicion?”

Charlotte shook her head.

“No.”

She opened another folder.

“I am suggesting suspending them based on evidence.”

She turned the screen on.

Financial records appeared.

Multiple transactions.

Hidden accounts.

Private companies.

Every detail.

Daniel’s face became pale.

Richard remained calm.

But Charlotte saw it.

A small crack.

A brief moment where he realized the situation was moving beyond his control.

Charlotte continued.

“Effective immediately, Daniel Cross will be removed from his position as Chief Financial Officer pending investigation.”

The room erupted.

Daniel stood.

“You cannot do this!”

Charlotte looked at him.

“Actually, I can.”

She placed another document on the table.

“Your employment agreement includes an integrity clause.”

Daniel stared at the paper.

The confidence disappeared.

Richard finally spoke.

“This is becoming personal.”

Charlotte looked at him.

“No.”

Her voice was cold.

“This became personal when people stole from my family.”

Nobody spoke.

After the meeting ended, Richard remained behind.

Charlotte expected it.

He waited until everyone left.

Then closed the door.

“You are becoming exactly like your father.”

Charlotte looked at him.

“Is that supposed to be an insult?”

“No.”

Richard walked toward the window.

“It is a warning.”

Charlotte remained silent.

Richard looked over the city.

“Your father believed intelligence was enough.”

“He believed he could predict everyone.”

A pause.

“He was wrong.”

Charlotte’s expression changed.

“You talk about him like you knew he would lose.”

Richard turned.

“Because I did.”

The sentence hung in the air.

Charlotte stared at him.

“You knew?”

Richard realized his mistake.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

Charlotte stepped closer.

“You knew something would happen to him.”

Richard’s face hardened.

“Be careful.”

“No.”

Charlotte shook her head.

“I’m done being careful with people who hide behind warnings.”

For the first time, Richard looked genuinely angry.

“You have no idea what you are dealing with.”

Charlotte smiled.

“I know more than you think.”

She walked toward the door.

Then stopped.

“By the way…”

Richard looked at her.

“Adrian Black sends his regards?”

The change was immediate.

Richard froze.

A person like Richard Blackwood did not react easily.

But that name affected him.

Charlotte saw everything.

Fear.

Shock.

Recognition.

She had her answer.

Richard knew Adrian.

And more importantly…

Richard feared him.

That night, Charlotte returned to the hidden vault beneath Solmere Hotel.

She needed more answers.

The files from Project Phoenix contained thousands of records.

But one file caught her attention.

BLACK FOUNDATION NETWORK

She opened it.

Inside were financial records connected to dozens of companies around the world.

Different names.

Different industries.

Different countries.

But one person appeared repeatedly.

Adrian Black.

He was not just wealthy.

He was not just influential.

He had built an invisible network.

A shadow empire.

While Richard controlled Solmere from the public stage…

Adrian controlled the people who controlled companies.

Politicians.

Investors.

Executives.

He never needed his name on a building.

He owned the hands that signed the contracts.

Charlotte continued reading.

Then she found something unexpected.

A connection.

A company purchased by Adrian’s network.

A small biotechnology firm.

The same firm that handled medical research related to her mother’s accident.

Charlotte stopped breathing.

Her mother.

Not her father.

Her mother.

She quickly opened the records.

There were missing files.

Deleted information.

But one document remained.

A payment authorization.

Signed by…

Evelyn Vale.

Charlotte closed her eyes.

Another secret.

Another layer.

Every answer created more questions.

Meanwhile, across the city, Adrian Black sat in his private office.

Unlike Richard’s office, his was not filled with symbols of success.

No expensive paintings.

No trophies.

No signs of wealth.

Only books.

Documents.

And screens.

Because Adrian did not care about appearing powerful.

He cared about being powerful.

Richard entered the room.

He looked exhausted.

Adrian did not turn around.

“You let her find the vault.”

Richard remained silent.

“That was not supposed to happen.”

“I underestimated her.”

Adrian smiled slightly.

“No.”

He finally turned.

“You underestimated Alexander.”

Richard frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Adrian walked toward him.

“Alexander knew this day might come.”

He picked up a document.

“He prepared Charlotte.”

Richard looked uncomfortable.

“She is becoming a problem.”

Adrian smiled.

“A problem?”

A pause.

“No.”

He looked at the screen displaying Charlotte’s image.

“She is becoming exactly what we feared.”

Richard lowered his voice.

“What do we do?”

Adrian looked at him.

“Nothing.”

Richard seemed surprised.

“Nothing?”

“Not yet.”

Adrian walked back to his desk.

“Let her investigate.”

“Let her expose people.”

“Let her believe she is winning.”

Richard frowned.

“Why?”

Adrian smiled.

“Because the closer she gets to the truth…”

He paused.

“The easier it becomes to destroy everything she believes.”

The next morning, Charlotte arrived at Solmere Headquarters.

Waiting for her was an unexpected visitor.

A man in his thirties.

Elegant suit.

Calm expression.

He handed her an envelope.

“Miss Vale.”

Charlotte looked at him.

“Who are you?”

The man smiled.

“My name is Ethan Black.”

Charlotte’s expression changed.

Another Black.

“What do you want?”

Ethan handed her the envelope.

“A message from Adrian Black.”

Charlotte opened it.

Inside was a single sentence.

You have spent your life believing your father was a victim.

You were wrong.

Charlotte looked up.

The man was already walking away.

She opened the second page.

And the final line made her blood run cold.

Your father did not die because of my actions.

He died because of a secret he was trying to hide from you.

Charlotte stared at the words.

Because now the enemy was no longer saying:

“I destroyed your family.”

He was saying something much more dangerous.

May you like

Your family was never what you thought it was.
