Chapter 7: The Aunt’s Secret and the Woman Behind the Betrayal

The underground vault became silent.

Not the peaceful kind of silence.

The kind that arrived after a truth had been revealed and nobody knew how to breathe.

Charlotte stared at the screen.

Evelyn Vale.

The name remained there.

Impossible.

Unacceptable.

Yet undeniable.

For years, Evelyn had been one of the few people Charlotte believed she could trust.

After her father’s death.

After her mother’s funeral.

After the world around her collapsed.

Evelyn was the woman who stayed.

The woman who held her while she cried.

The woman who told her everything would be okay.

But now Alexander Vale’s hidden files suggested something completely different.

That the woman who comforted Charlotte…

might have been one of the people who destroyed her family.

Victoria looked at Charlotte carefully.

For the first time, she saw something she had never seen before.

Not anger.

Not confidence.

Pain.

Real pain.

Because Richard Blackwood was an enemy.

Enemies were easy to fight.

But family was different.

Family knew where your heart was.

And they knew exactly where to strike.

“Charlotte…”

Victoria spoke quietly.

“Are you sure this is real?”

Charlotte didn’t answer immediately.

Her eyes remained on the screen.

“I don’t know.”

That answer surprised Victoria.

Because until now, Charlotte had seemed impossible to shake.

But this was different.

“This file could have been manipulated,” Victoria said.

Charlotte looked at her.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“But my father created this vault.”

She looked back at the screen.

“He trusted this information enough to hide it here.”

Victoria became silent.

Charlotte closed the file.

“We need everything.”

“What?”

“Every document.”

She looked around the vault.

“Every recording.”

“Every transaction.”

“Every piece of evidence connected to Evelyn Vale.”

Her voice became colder.

“If she betrayed my family…”

A pause.

“Then I need to know why.”

Several hours later, Charlotte returned to the Vale estate.

But this time, she did not enter as a daughter remembering her childhood.

She entered as an investigator.

The house that once represented warmth now felt like a crime scene.

Every photograph.

Every memory.

Every conversation.

Everything had to be reconsidered.

She walked into the living room.

A large portrait of her family hung on the wall.

Her father.

Her mother.

And Charlotte as a young girl.

Behind them stood Evelyn.

Smiling.

Happy.

A perfect family picture.

Charlotte stared at the image.

“How long?”

Her voice was quiet.

“How long were you lying?”

The next morning, Charlotte called Evelyn.

She did not accuse her.

She did not reveal what she found.

Not yet.

She needed the truth from Evelyn herself.

“Charlotte?”

Evelyn answered warmly.

“My dear, I heard you returned to Solmere Headquarters.”

Charlotte sat at her father’s old desk.

“Yes.”

“I was so happy when I heard.”

Evelyn sounded emotional.

“I always knew you would come back.”

Charlotte looked down.

Interesting.

Always knew.

“You did?”

“Yes.”

A small pause.

“You are Alexander’s daughter.”

Charlotte closed her eyes.

That sentence.

Those words.

They once made her feel proud.

Now they felt different.

“Can we meet?”

Evelyn immediately agreed.

“Of course.”

They met at a private garden behind the Vale estate.

The same garden where Charlotte used to play as a child.

Evelyn arrived wearing a simple elegant dress.

She looked exactly as Charlotte remembered.

Kind.

Graceful.

Motherly.

That almost made it worse.

Evelyn smiled.

“My dear.”

She reached out.

Charlotte did not move closer.

The hesitation lasted only a second.

But Evelyn noticed.

Her expression changed.

“You’re upset.”

Charlotte looked at her.

“Am I?”

Evelyn sighed.

“Charlotte, I know this situation has been overwhelming.”

“You mean finding out I own the company?”

Evelyn looked away.

“Yes.”

Charlotte watched her carefully.

“You knew.”

A silence.

A very small silence.

But enough.

Evelyn recovered quickly.

“I knew you were the rightful heir.”

Charlotte’s eyes narrowed.

“But you never told me.”

Evelyn sat down.

“Things were complicated.”

“No.”

Charlotte shook her head.

“They were hidden.”

Evelyn looked hurt.

“You think I wanted to hurt you?”

Charlotte didn’t answer.

Because that was the question she had been asking herself all night.

Did Evelyn betray her intentionally?

Or was there another explanation?

Evelyn reached into her bag.

She pulled out an old photograph.

Charlotte looked at it.

It was her father.

Richard.

Marcus.

And Evelyn.

Together.

Years ago.

“This was taken before you were born.”

Evelyn said.

“Your father, Richard, and I were working together.”

Charlotte looked at the picture.

“Friends.”

“Yes.”

Evelyn smiled sadly.

“Your father believed people could be trusted.”

A strange statement.

Coming from her.

“He was wrong.”

Charlotte looked up.

“What do you mean?”

Evelyn’s expression became serious.

“Alexander built an empire but failed to see the people around him.”

Charlotte felt something change.

Because that sounded less like regret…

and more like resentment.

“Did you hate him?”

Evelyn became quiet.

For several seconds.

Then she answered:

“No.”

A pause.

“I loved him.”

Charlotte froze.

Loved him?

Evelyn looked away.

“Your father was brilliant.”

Her voice softened.

“He was respected.”

“He was admired.”

“And everyone believed he was perfect.”

Charlotte listened.

“But people forget something.”

Evelyn looked back at her.

“Being perfect means everyone else lives in your shadow.”

Charlotte understood.

This was not just about money.

This was about jealousy.

Years of it.

Evelyn continued.

“I was there when Solmere was built.”

“I sacrificed my time.”

“My youth.”

“My opportunities.”

“And what did I get?”

Charlotte stared at her.

“You wanted recognition.”

Evelyn smiled sadly.

“I wanted what I deserved.”

The sentence chilled Charlotte.

Because it sounded familiar.

Marcus.

Richard.

Everyone who betrayed her had said the same thing.

They believed they deserved more.

They believed taking was justified.

Charlotte stood.

“I need to ask you something.”

Evelyn looked up.

“Did you help Richard?”

The garden became silent.

Wind moved through the trees.

For a moment, Evelyn said nothing.

Then…

she smiled.

Not the warm smile Charlotte knew.

A different one.

A colder one.

“You found the vault.”

Charlotte’s heart stopped.

She knew.

Evelyn knew about the vault.

“How?”

Evelyn stood slowly.

“Because I helped your father build it.”

Charlotte stared.

“Then you know Project Phoenix.”

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“Yes.”

“Then why?”

The question came out quietly.

“Why did you betray us?”

Evelyn looked at her.

And for the first time…

Charlotte saw the real woman behind the mask.

“I didn’t betray you.”

Charlotte frowned.

“What?”

Evelyn stepped closer.

“I betrayed Alexander.”

A pause.

“But never you.”

Charlotte was confused.

Before she could respond, Evelyn continued.

“Your father made one mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“He believed the empire could survive without changing.”

Evelyn looked toward the mansion.

“Richard wanted money.”

“Marcus wanted power.”

“But I wanted control.”

Charlotte felt cold.

Because those words were not a denial.

They were a confession.

Evelyn continued.

“I did not help them because I hated you.”

She looked directly at Charlotte.

“I helped them because I knew Alexander’s system would eventually fail.”

Charlotte shook her head.

“You stole my inheritance.”

“No.”

Evelyn replied.

“I protected it.”

The answer was shocking.

Charlotte stared at her.

“By destroying my life?”

Evelyn looked away.

“I needed you to disappear.”

Silence.

The truth finally arrived.

Not like an explosion.

More like a blade slowly cutting through everything Charlotte believed.

“You were the reason everyone thought I was gone.”

Evelyn didn’t deny it.

“Yes.”

Charlotte stepped back.

Her eyes hardened.

“You erased me.”

Evelyn’s voice lowered.

“Because if I didn’t…”

She paused.

“Richard would have killed you.”

The world seemed to stop.

Charlotte stared.

“What did you say?”

Evelyn looked terrified for the first time.

“You think this was about stealing the company?”

A pause.

“You don’t understand.”

She whispered:

“Your father’s death was not an accident.”

Charlotte froze.

The air disappeared from her lungs.

Evelyn continued:

“The people who wanted Solmere did not just want control.”

“They wanted the Vale family gone.”

Charlotte’s hands tightened.

“My father…”

Evelyn nodded slowly.

“Was murdered.”

For the first time since returning…

Charlotte had no words.

Because she came back expecting betrayal.

She came back expecting a corporate war.

She did not expect a murder.

She did not expect her father’s death to be part of something much larger.

Evelyn looked at her.

“There is someone else.”

Charlotte looked up.

“Who?”

Evelyn’s eyes filled with fear.

“Someone Richard answers to.”

Someone above Richard.

Someone controlling everything.

A person even Alexander Vale feared.

Charlotte whispered:

“Who?”

Evelyn looked toward the city.

Then said one name.

A name Charlotte had never expected.

“Adrian Black.”

Charlotte frowned.

“Black?”

Evelyn nodded.

“Richard’s older brother.”

A man nobody knew existed.

A man who had stayed hidden for decades.

A man who had been controlling the empire war from the shadows.

Evelyn looked at Charlotte.

“And now that you have returned…”

She whispered:

“He knows you are alive.”

At that exact moment, inside a private penthouse overlooking the city…

a man watched footage from the Solmere Hotel lobby.

The moment Charlotte revealed her identity.

The moment she activated Project Phoenix.

The moment she discovered the vault.

The man smiled.

Adrian Black.

Older than Richard.

More patient.

More dangerous.

He turned off the screen.

“So…”

He said quietly.

“Alexander’s daughter finally came home.”

He poured himself a drink.

“But she still doesn’t know the truth.”

A pause.

His smile disappeared.

May you like

“She doesn’t know I was the one who started this war.”
