CHAPTER 8 The Secret Behind the Camera

The article spread faster than anyone expected.

By sunrise, the story had escaped the walls of the Carter family mansion.

People who had never heard of Ethan, Bethany, or Rosie were now discussing what happened.

Some demanded justice.

Some questioned the family.

Some defended Bethany.

But one thing was impossible to deny.

The video had changed everything.

For years, the Carter family had controlled their image.

A respected family.

A successful family.

A family everyone admired.

Now, that image was cracking.

And behind the cracks were secrets.

Ethan sat in his office staring at the message on his phone.

Bethany wasn’t the only person who knew.

He read it again.

Then again.

His mind searched through every possibility.

Who else knew?

Who else watched?

Who else stayed silent?

His phone rang.

Laura.

“I need you to come to my office.”

Ethan immediately stood.

“What happened?”

“I found something.”

Her voice was serious.

“Something from the original footage.”

Ethan grabbed his jacket.

“What kind of something?”

“A hidden file.”

He stopped.

“Hidden?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Someone tried to erase it.”

Twenty minutes later, Ethan arrived at Laura’s office.

Daniel was already there.

A laptop sat on the desk.

Laura looked at Ethan.

“We recovered another recording.”

She pressed a button.

The screen showed the Carter mansion security system.

The date was three months before Rosie’s birthday.

Ethan watched.

The camera showed the backyard.

Rosie was playing with a small toy house.

Then Bethany appeared.

At first, nothing seemed wrong.

Until Bethany started speaking.

“She needs to stop depending on him.”

Ethan frowned.

The audio continued.

“She thinks Ethan will always save her.”

Bethany was talking about Rosie.

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

Laura paused the video.

“This was only the beginning.”

She continued playing.

The next clip was from a different day.

Bethany complaining to someone.

But the person beside her was hidden from the camera.

“I’m tired of being the disappointment.”

A voice responded.

“You’re not.”

Ethan froze.

Because he recognized the voice.

His father.

Richard.

The recording continued.

Bethany said:

“Ethan always thinks he’s better than me.”

Richard answered:

“He always has.”

Ethan stepped back.

The room became silent.

Laura looked at him.

“Ethan…”

He raised his hand.

“Keep playing.”

The recording continued.

Richard’s voice became clearer.

“You need to be careful.”

Bethany laughed.

“Careful?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because if Ethan finds out…”

A pause.

“He’ll take Rosie away from us.”

Ethan’s face changed.

The sentence hit him.

Take Rosie away.

They weren’t just ignoring the problem.

They were discussing it.

Planning around it.

Laura stopped the video.

“That’s why I wanted you here.”

Ethan stared at the frozen screen.

His father.

His sister.

His daughter.

All connected by a secret.

“How long?”

Laura looked at him.

“What?”

“How long did they know?”

She lowered her eyes.

“We’re still investigating.”

Ethan walked toward the window.

For a moment, he said nothing.

He had already accepted that Bethany failed Rosie.

But Richard…

That was different.

Because Bethany was his sister.

Richard was his father.

The person who taught him what being a parent meant.

Or at least…

Who was supposed to.

At the Carter mansion, Richard sat alone.

The news reports played quietly in the background.

He ignored them.

His attention was on an old photograph.

A picture from years ago.

Ethan as a child.

Bethany as a little girl.

Both standing beside him.

Both smiling.

He touched the photo.

“Where did I go wrong?”

The question had no answer.

A knock interrupted him.

Margaret entered.

She looked exhausted.

“You need to talk to Ethan.”

Richard looked up.

“I know.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You don’t understand.”

She walked closer.

“He knows.”

Richard froze.

“What?”

“About the recordings.”

The color disappeared from his face.

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

She looked at him.

“But he knows.”

Richard slowly stood.

“I need to explain.”

Margaret’s expression was painful.

“Will he believe you?”

Richard said nothing.

Because he knew the answer.

That afternoon, Ethan arrived at the mansion.

This time, Richard did not act angry.

He did not defend himself.

He simply waited.

“I know.”

Richard spoke first.

Ethan stopped.

“You know what?”

“The recordings.”

Silence.

Richard looked down.

“I know you saw them.”

Ethan stared at him.

“Then explain.”

Richard took a deep breath.

“I was afraid.”

Ethan laughed quietly.

“Afraid?”

“Yes.”

“Of what?”

Richard looked at him.

“Losing my family.”

The answer shocked Ethan.

Because it sounded almost reasonable.

Almost.

“But you already lost us.”

Richard looked hurt.

“I was trying to fix it.”

“No.”

Ethan shook his head.

“You were trying to hide it.”

Richard had no response.

Because that was true.

“I thought Bethany would change.”

Ethan’s eyes hardened.

“How long did you wait?”

Richard looked away.

“Months.”

The silence that followed was unbearable.

“Months?”

Ethan’s voice lowered.

“My daughter was afraid for months?”

Richard closed his eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

“No.”

Ethan shook his head.

“You don’t get to say that yet.”

Richard looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because sorry is what people say when they regret being caught.”

A pause.

“Change is what people do when they regret what they did.”

Richard nodded slowly.

“You’re right.”

The acceptance surprised Ethan.

His father continued.

“I failed.”

A tear fell from his eye.

“I spent my life teaching you to protect what matters.”

He looked toward the hallway.

“And then I forgot that people matter more than reputation.”

That evening, Ethan received another message.

Same unknown number.

This time, there was no warning.

Only a location.

And a sentence.

If you want the complete truth, come alone.

Ethan stared at the message.

Laura immediately told him not to go.

“It could be a trap.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you considering it?”

Because deep down, Ethan knew something.

The person sending these messages knew things nobody else knew.

They had access to information.

Evidence.

Secrets.

And if there was one thing Ethan had learned…

It was that secrets were what destroyed families.

Not the truth.

The truth only exposed the damage that was already there.

That night, Ethan arrived at the location.

An abandoned office building on the edge of town.

The lights flickered.

The hallway was empty.

He walked slowly.

Every step echoed.

Then he heard a voice.

“You came.”

Ethan turned.

A man stepped out of the shadows.

Someone he recognized.

Someone who had been at Rosie’s birthday party.

Someone who had been standing quietly in the corner.

Daniel.

Ethan froze.

“Daniel?”

Daniel looked away.

“I’m sorry.”

The words immediately raised Ethan’s suspicion.

“What is going on?”

Daniel took a deep breath.

“There’s something I didn’t tell you.”

Ethan stared at him.

“What?”

Daniel looked directly into his eyes.

“I wasn’t the only person recording that night.”

A pause.

“I was recording because someone asked me to.”

Ethan felt a chill.

“Who?”

Daniel’s face became filled with regret.

Then he answered.

“Your mother.”

The world seemed to stop.

Ethan said nothing.

Daniel continued:

“She knew something was wrong.”

A pause.

“She wanted proof.”

Ethan’s heart sank.

“Then why didn’t she stop it?”

Daniel looked down.

“Because she was waiting.”

“For what?”

Daniel swallowed.

“For the right moment to expose Bethany.”

Ethan stared.

But something felt wrong.

Because if Margaret wanted the truth…

Why did she wait until Rosie was hurt?

Why did she let it continue?

Daniel whispered:

“And Ethan…”

“Yes?”

“There’s more.”

A long silence.

“Your mother didn’t record Bethany because she was trying to protect Rosie.”

Daniel looked at him.

“She recorded her because she was afraid Bethany would destroy the family.”

Ethan felt the pieces coming together.

Another secret.

Another person choosing the family image over the child.

And suddenly he realized…

The real problem was never just Bethany.

May you like

It was an entire family that had learned to stay silent.
