CHAPTER 14 The Real Target

Ethan read the message again.
Then again.
His fingers tightened around the phone.
Bethany was not the target.
Your daughter was.
For a few seconds, the world seemed to stop.
The voices around him disappeared.
The sounds of the house faded away.
There was only one thought.
Rosie.
His daughter.
The little girl who had already been hurt once.
The little girl who still woke up from nightmares sometimes.
The little girl who trusted him to keep her safe.
A cold fear moved through him.
Not the fear of losing his reputation.
Not the fear of losing his family.
The fear every parent understood.
The fear of failing to protect their child.
Ethan immediately called Marcus.
The phone rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
No answer.
He called again.
Nothing.
His anger grew.
Then a message appeared.
Meet me if you want answers.
Ethan typed back.
Where?
A location arrived seconds later.
An old warehouse near the river.
The same place where Marcus had stored old business records years ago.
Ethan knew this was dangerous.
He knew it could be another manipulation.
But he also knew one thing.
If someone was coming after Rosie…
He needed to know why.
Before leaving, Ethan told Laura everything.
She immediately shook her head.
“No.”
Ethan looked at her.
“I need answers.”
“You need protection.”
“I can’t sit here while someone threatens my daughter.”
Laura stepped closer.
“I understand.”
Her voice softened.
“But rushing into danger is exactly what people like Marcus want.”
Ethan looked down.
“What would you do?”
Laura answered immediately.
“Bring people you trust.”
A pause.
“Not people who share your blood.”
The words hit him.
Because she was right.
Blood had not protected Rosie.
Actions had.
Ethan called Daniel.
Then, unexpectedly, he called Richard.
His father answered after one ring.
“What happened?”
Ethan was surprised.
“You knew?”
“I heard your voice.”
Richard paused.
“You sound scared.”
Ethan looked toward Rosie’s room.
“I got a message.”
A silence.
“About Rosie.”
Richard’s voice changed immediately.
“What kind of message?”
Ethan explained.
When he finished, Richard spoke quietly.
“I’m coming with you.”
Ethan hesitated.
After everything…
After all the secrets…
After all the pain…
Part of him still wanted to refuse.
But another part remembered something.
Richard had failed before.
That did not mean he could not choose differently now.
“Okay.”
Richard was silent.
Then:
“Thank you.”
The warehouse stood empty under the gray evening sky.
Ethan arrived with Daniel, Laura, and Richard.
The old building looked abandoned.
Broken windows.
Rusty doors.
Years of dust covering forgotten memories.
They entered slowly.
Then a voice echoed.
“I knew you would come.”
Marcus stepped out.
Ethan immediately moved forward.
“Tell me why.”
Marcus looked at him.
“You want the truth?”
“Yes.”
Marcus smiled sadly.
“Everyone says that.”
He looked at Richard.
“But when the truth arrives, they hate the person carrying it.”
Richard remained silent.
Marcus continued.
“Your daughter was never my target.”
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
“Then who?”
Marcus looked toward him.
“Your family’s future.”
The answer confused him.
“What does that mean?”
Marcus walked toward an old table.
A folder sat there.
He opened it.
Inside were documents.
“Your father built everything.”
Richard’s expression changed.
“But he built it on stolen foundations.”
Marcus looked at Ethan.
“When Richard destroyed me, he didn’t just take my company.”
He placed a document on the table.
“He took my inheritance.”
Ethan looked down.
“What inheritance?”
Marcus pointed.
“Your family trust.”
Ethan froze.
“What?”
Richard’s face changed.
Because he knew.
“You never told him.”
Richard looked away.
Marcus laughed.
“Of course he didn’t.”
Ethan turned toward his father.
“What is he talking about?”
Richard remained silent.
“Dad.”
Finally, Richard spoke.
“Years ago…”
A pause.
“I made an agreement.”
“With Marcus?”
“Yes.”
“And?”
Richard looked ashamed.
“The company was supposed to belong partly to Noah.”
Ethan stared.
“Noah?”
“Yes.”
Marcus continued.
“But Richard changed the agreement.”
The room became silent.
“He removed my son’s name.”
Ethan looked at Richard.
“Why?”
Richard’s voice was barely audible.
“Because I was afraid.”
Again.
That word.
“I thought Noah’s existence would destroy everything.”
Marcus nodded.
“And that is why I waited.”
Ethan looked at him.
“You wanted revenge.”
Marcus didn’t deny it.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“But I never planned for Rosie to be hurt.”
Ethan stepped closer.
“Then explain.”
Marcus revealed the truth.
He had approached Bethany because he knew she was vulnerable.
He knew she was angry.
He knew she wanted recognition.
He gave her information about Richard.
He pushed her toward confrontation.
But something changed.
Bethany became obsessed with proving herself.
She wanted to hurt Ethan.
To show she mattered.
And Rosie became the easiest way.
A child who represented everything Bethany believed she never had.
Love.
Attention.
Protection.
Ethan closed his eyes.
It was painful.
Because everyone had contributed.
Everyone had added another piece to the disaster.
Then Daniel suddenly noticed something.
A second folder hidden beneath the table.
“Ethan.”
He picked it up.
Inside were photographs.
Not of Bethany.
Not of Richard.
Of Rosie.
Ethan’s entire body went cold.
Pictures of Rosie at school.
Pictures of Rosie playing outside.
Pictures of their house.
“How did you get these?”
Marcus looked confused.
“I didn’t.”
Everyone became still.
“Someone else was watching.”
Laura immediately took the folder.
Her expression changed.
“These are recent.”
Ethan looked at Marcus.
“Who else knows about my daughter?”
Nobody answered.
Then Richard noticed something written on one of the photographs.
A message.
Four words.
She will pay for him.
Ethan felt his blood turn cold.
“Who is him?”
Nobody spoke.
Then Marcus whispered:
“Noah.”
The drive home was silent.
Nobody spoke.
Because they all understood.
The danger had changed.
This was no longer about family secrets.
This was no longer about old betrayals.
Someone was targeting Rosie because of a connection from twenty years ago.
A connection she had never chosen.
A war created by adults.
A war she did not understand.
When Ethan arrived home, he ran inside.
“Rosie!”
No answer.
His heart stopped.
He rushed upstairs.
Her bedroom door was open.
The room was empty.
“Rosie!”
Then he heard a small voice.
“Daddy?”
He turned.
Rosie stood in the hallway.
Safe.
Holding her rabbit.
Ethan dropped to his knees and hugged her tightly.
“What happened?”
Rosie looked confused.
“Grandpa was here.”
Ethan froze.
“What?”
She pointed downstairs.
“He said someone wanted to talk.”
Ethan slowly stood.
His face changed.
Because Richard had been with him.
Richard had not come home.
And now someone had been inside the house.
Downstairs, Ethan found a note on the table.
No signature.
Only one sentence.
You protected her today.
Another line appeared below.
But you cannot protect her forever.
Ethan stared at the paper.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A voice spoke.
Not Marcus.
Not Bethany.
Someone else.
“You should have let the past stay buried.”
Ethan’s voice became cold.
“Who are you?”
A pause.
Then:
“Someone who lost everything because of your father.”
The call ended.
Ethan looked at Rosie.
Then at the note.
The final battle had begun.
And this time…
The person they were fighting was not trying to destroy the Carter family.
They were trying to destroy Ethan’s reason to keep fighting.
May you like
His daughter.
