CHAPTER 11 The Child Nobody Knew About

Ethan stood frozen in the middle of his living room.

The phone was still in his hand.

But he no longer heard the sounds around him.

Not the traffic outside.

Not the television playing quietly in the background.

Not even Rosie’s footsteps coming from upstairs.

Only one sentence remained in his mind.

A birth record.

A child connected to his family.

For twenty years, his family had carried a secret.

And now that secret was walking toward the surface.

Slowly.

Piece by piece.

Like a locked room finally being opened after decades.

“Daddy?”

Ethan turned.

Rosie stood at the bottom of the stairs holding her rabbit.

Her face immediately changed.

Because children noticed things adults tried to hide.

“You have your serious face again.”

Ethan forced a smile.

“I’m okay.”

Rosie tilted her head.

“You’re fixing something?”

He looked at her.

“Yes.”

She walked closer.

“Is it broken?”

Ethan looked down.

The question was innocent.

But somehow, it felt deeper than she knew.

“Yes.”

He crouched.

“Something is broken.”

Rosie touched his hand.

“Can you fix it?”

Ethan looked at his daughter.

The child who had taught him the most important lesson of his life.

That love was not about protecting appearances.

It was about protecting people.

“I’ll try.”

Rosie smiled.

“That means you can.”

And for a moment…

The weight on his shoulders became lighter.

An hour later, Ethan met Laura again.

The folder was already waiting.

He opened it slowly.

Inside was a birth certificate.

A name.

A date.

A mother.

A father.

His eyes moved across the document.

Then stopped.

The father’s name.

Richard Carter.

Ethan felt his stomach drop.

“No.”

Laura watched him carefully.

“I know this is difficult.”

“No.”

He looked up.

“This can’t be right.”

The document was twenty years old.

The child had been born before Ethan’s marriage.

Before Rosie.

Before everything.

“Who is the mother?”

Laura hesitated.

Then handed him another paper.

Ethan read the name.

And froze.

“Margaret?”

His mother.

The name on the document belonged to his mother.

No.

That made no sense.

He looked again.

Then he understood.

The mother listed was not Margaret.

It was someone else.

Someone he had heard about only once.

Someone whose name had disappeared from family conversations.

“Sarah Vale.”

Laura nodded.

“Yes.”

Ethan looked confused.

“Vale.”

“The same last name as Marcus Vale.”

The room became silent.

The missing business partner.

The hidden child.

The old photograph.

Everything connected.

“So Marcus…”

“Yes.”

Laura finished the sentence.

“Is the child’s father.”

Ethan stared at the document.

His father had a child with another woman.

A child nobody knew about.

A child hidden for twenty years.

That evening, Ethan confronted Richard.

No warning.

No appointment.

He walked directly into his father’s office.

Richard looked up.

And immediately knew.

“You found out.”

Ethan stopped.

The words hurt more because Richard did not look surprised.

“You knew I would eventually.”

Richard slowly stood.

“I hoped I could explain before you discovered it this way.”

Ethan placed the birth certificate on the desk.

“Explain.”

Richard looked at the paper.

Then closed his eyes.

For a moment, he looked like a man carrying a burden too heavy for too long.

“His name is Noah.”

Ethan said nothing.

“My son.”

The words were quiet.

But they changed everything.

“You had another child.”

“Yes.”

“And nobody knew?”

Richard looked down.

“No.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“You spent years teaching me about honesty.”

A pause.

“And you hid an entire person.”

Richard accepted the anger.

“I was wrong.”

“Why?”

Richard walked toward the window.

“Because I was afraid.”

Ethan shook his head.

“Everyone in this family uses that word.”

Richard looked at him.

“What?”

“Afraid.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“Bethany was afraid.”

“Your mother was afraid.”

“You were afraid.”

His voice became heavier.

“And Rosie was the only one who wasn’t.”

Richard looked away.

Richard finally told the story.

Twenty years earlier, before the Carter family became what everyone knew today, Richard had worked with Marcus Vale.

They built their first company together.

They were partners.

Friends.

Brothers in everything except blood.

Then Richard met Sarah.

A woman who worked in their company.

Someone kind.

Someone who saw him before the money and success.

Before the image.

Their relationship lasted only a few months.

When Sarah became pregnant, Richard panicked.

Not because he didn’t care.

Because he was terrified.

His company was growing.

His reputation was growing.

His marriage was already planned.

He made a choice.

A terrible one.

He paid Sarah to leave.

He promised he would support the child.

But he kept the secret.

Until Sarah disappeared.

And Marcus took Noah away.

“You abandoned him.”

Ethan’s words were quiet.

Richard nodded.

“Yes.”

“And then you built a perfect family image.”

Richard looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

Ethan turned away.

He wanted to be angry.

But all he saw was a pattern.

A family where everyone buried problems instead of solving them.

Everyone choosing silence.

Everyone hoping time would erase pain.

But time did not erase pain.

It only buried it deeper.

The next morning, Ethan received another message.

From the unknown number.

Now you know about Noah.

His eyes narrowed.

He replied:

Who are you?

The response came immediately.

Someone who knows what your father did.

Another message.

Someone who knows what Marcus Vale wants.

Ethan stared.

What does he want?

The reply took longer.

Then:

Revenge.

Later that day, Bethany came to Ethan’s house.

She looked nervous.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Just tired.

“I know about Noah.”

Ethan looked at her.

“How?”

She smiled sadly.

“Because I was the one who found out first.”

Ethan froze.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

Bethany looked down.

“Because I was angry.”

“At Dad?”

“At everyone.”

A pause.

“I thought if I exposed him, the whole family would collapse.”

Ethan stared.

“And now?”

She looked at Rosie playing in the other room.

“Now I realize the family was already broken.”

Those words were unexpectedly honest.

Ethan said nothing.

Bethany continued:

“I hired Marcus to investigate Dad.”

Ethan’s expression changed.

“You paid him?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted proof.”

She looked ashamed.

“But I didn’t know what he would do with it.”

A cold feeling moved through Ethan.

“What do you mean?”

Bethany swallowed.

“Marcus wasn’t just investigating.”

A pause.

“He was collecting weaknesses.”

That night, Ethan finally understood.

The family had not simply been destroyed by one person.

There were layers.

Secrets inside secrets.

Pain hidden beneath pride.

And somewhere outside the family…

Marcus Vale was waiting.

Waiting for the right moment.

Not to reveal the truth.

But to use it.

Ethan looked at Rosie sleeping peacefully.

Then he looked at the old photograph of his father and Marcus.

A new fear appeared.

Because if Marcus wanted revenge…

Who would he hurt first?

Richard?

Bethany?

Or the one person everyone knew Ethan would protect at any cost?

May you like

Rosie.
