Chapter 7 - The Clockmaker's VaultWe returned to New York under a false identity.

The estate was empty.

Police surrounded the outer streets.

News helicopters circled overhead.

By morning, every major media outlet was running the same story.

Billionaire family under federal investigation.

Unknown armed organization raids private estate.

Missing child.

International conspiracy.

My old life was collapsing publicly.

That was useful.

Chaos hides movement.

I entered the house through the workshop.

The antique clocks were still there.

I ran my hand over the largest grandfather clock.

Lily used to hide behind it.

I remembered her laughing.

Then I noticed something.

The second hand was moving backward.

I froze.

I pressed the clock's face.

A mechanism clicked.

The entire wall shifted.

Behind it was a vault.

Thorne stared.

“You built this?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

I entered.

Inside was a single wooden box.

No weapons.

No money.

Just letters.

Twenty-three of them.

All addressed to me.

All written by my father.

My father had supposedly died when I was fourteen.

I opened the first.

JULIAN,

If you are reading this, then the Architect has returned.

The bloodline has survived.

And someone is coming for your children.

I stopped.

Children.

Plural.

I opened the second.

Your mother will tell you lies.

Your brother will tell you half-truths.

And Adrian will tell you exactly enough truth to make you doubt yourself.

The third letter was shorter.

Do not trust Caroline.

My fingers tightened.

Thorne watched silently.

I opened the fourth.

Caroline is not your enemy.

She is a shield.

I looked up.

What?

The fifth letter explained.

Caroline had married into the family not to infiltrate my world.

She had been planted by my father to protect me from the Aurelian Circle.

She had spent years feeding them false information.

The surveillance footage I had seen had been manipulated.

Cynthia's abuse was real.

But Caroline's involvement was not what it appeared to be.

My father had hidden evidence inside the surveillance system.

A trap.

A breadcrumb trail.

I opened the final letter.

Adrian is not the Cardinal.

I stopped breathing.

At the bottom was a name.

THE CARDINAL IS YOU.

I stared at it.

Thorne whispered, “Sir?”

I read it again.

The Cardinal is you.

It made no sense.

Then the vault doors slammed shut.

Gas hissed through the vents.

Thorne dropped instantly.

I covered my mouth.

The room spun.

A speaker came alive.

Adrian's voice.

“You finally found it.”

I staggered toward the control panel.

“You lied.”

“No.”

“You said you were the Cardinal.”

“I said you knew the Cardinal.”

The gas thickened.

My father's final letter slipped from my hand.

A second message appeared on the wall.

MEMORY IS THE LAST PRISON.

Then the room went dark.

I woke in a hospital.

Lily sat beside me.

Caroline stood near the window.

And the first thing she said was:

“Julian, there is something I never told you.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

May you like

She swallowed.

“Lily isn't your only child.”
