Chapter 17 - The Child in the PhotographThe photograph was old.

A baby.
Dark hair.
Gray eyes.
The same birthmark Lily had.
The same one Emma had.
I stared at the caption.
SUBJECT L-07.
I felt sick.
There was a seventh child.
Caroline had known.
“Where?”
The answer was encoded beneath the photograph.
Siberia.
A prison facility.
No official record.
No satellite footprint.
No survivors.
We went anyway.
The facility was buried under ice.
Inside were empty rooms.
Children's drawings covered the walls.
One image appeared repeatedly.
A family.
A father.
Three daughters.
And a black crown.
I followed the drawings.
They led to one locked door.
Inside was a teenage boy.
Not a girl.
He looked at me.
“You're Julian.”
“Yes.”
“My father?”
I froze.
“I don't know.”
He smiled.
“I do.”
He stood.
“My name is Noah.”
“Who told you about me?”
“My mother.”
“Who?”
He pointed behind me.
Caroline.
Alive.
I stared at her.
“What is this?”
She stepped forward.
“Noah is not your son.”
“Then what?”
“He is Adrian's.”
My heart stopped.
“Adrian had a child?”
“Yes.”
Noah looked at me.
“He wanted me hidden.”
“Why?”
“Because I was the last one.”
“The last what?”
“The last person with all three bloodline markers.”
Lily entered the room.
Noah looked at her.
For a second, they stared at each other.
Then he smiled.
“You're L-06.”
Lily nodded.
“What am I?”
Noah answered:
“The key.”
I stepped between them.
“Enough.”
Caroline shook her head.
“Julian, listen.”
“No more secrets.”
She swallowed.
“The Architect wasn't a person.”
I frowned.
“It was a protocol.”
My blood ran cold.
“Your father created it.”
“To do what?”
“To identify which bloodline could lead humanity without becoming tyrants.”
“That sounds insane.”
“It is.”
She looked at Lily.
“But it worked.”
I stared at my daughter.
The chocolate milk.
The fear.
The way she read people.
The way she understood systems without being taught.
Lily looked at me.
“I don't want to be a key.”
I knelt.
“You won't be.”
Noah smiled.
“Then what happens?”
I looked at Caroline.
She whispered:
“We burn the protocol.”
I nodded.
“Then let's burn it.”
But before we could leave, the facility doors locked.
A voice echoed through the speakers.
My father.
Recorded decades ago.
“Congratulations.”
A pause.
“You have assembled all three heirs.”
The screen illuminated.
May you like
Then another message appeared.
PHASE TWO BEGINS NOW.
