Chapter 11 - The House of MothersWe returned to New York before dawn.

The estate looked abandoned.

Too quiet.

Cynthia's car remained in the driveway.

The front door was open.

Lily was gone.

My mother was gone.

Caroline was gone.

Only a bloodstained ribbon remained in Lily's room.

Emma found it.

“She wore this.”

I took it from her.

My hands shook.

For the first time since everything began, fear pierced the armor.

Not fear for myself.

Fear that I had arrived too late.

Thorne moved toward the staircase.

“Sir.”

I looked up.

A hidden panel opened.

A staircase descended.

We followed.

At the bottom was a command center.

Hundreds of screens.

Maps.

Financial networks.

Satellites.

Names.

All connected.

My name appeared at the center.

I stepped closer.

A recording began.

My father.

Older than I remembered.

“If you're seeing this, Julian, then the Architect has failed.”

I stared.

He continued.

“That was the plan.”

“What plan?” I whispered.

The recording continued.

“The world needed to believe you were the mastermind.”

I shook my head.

“They had to fear you.”

My father smiled.

“But fear alone was never enough.”

The screen changed.

A family tree.

My family.

The D’Aubigne family.

The Aurelian Circle.

Governments.

Corporations.

Everything connected.

Then the final node.

LILY.

My father spoke.

“Your daughter is the key.”

I slammed my fist onto the console.

“Why?”

Because the answer came from behind me.

Cynthia.

She stood in the doorway.

Holding Lily.

A blade rested against my daughter's throat.

Caroline stood beside her.

My mother beside Caroline.

All three women were armed.

For a moment, I couldn't breathe.

Cynthia smiled.

“This is the part where the great Architect chooses.”

I looked at Lily.

“Let her go.”

“No.”

“Cynthia.”

“You think I abused her because I hated her.”

“You did.”

“I trained her.”

My face hardened.

“You tortured a child.”

“I prepared an heir.”

“To what?”

She smiled.

“The world.”

My mother stepped forward.

“Julian, listen.”

I ignored her.

“You all used my daughter.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Caroline looked at me.

“Because Adrian wasn't the enemy.”

She raised her weapon.

“The bloodline was.”

Then Lily whispered:

“Daddy.”

I looked at her.

“I'm scared.”

I took one step forward.

“Don't be.”

The lights shut off.

I smiled in the darkness.

Cynthia screamed.

“What did you do?”

I whispered:

“Nothing.”

The entire command center lit up.

Every screen displayed the same message.

IRON SENTINEL: FINAL PHASE.

Thorne's voice filled the room.

“Target acquisition complete.”

Cynthia froze.

I looked at her.

“You should have remembered.”

Her eyes widened.

“You don't command them.”

“No.”

I stepped forward.

“They command themselves.”

May you like

The doors exploded inward.

And the entire syndicate entered.
