Chapter 14 - THE LAST BETRAYALThe police surrounded the estate.

Helicopters flooded the cemetery with white light.
Marcus stood in the mausoleum smiling.
Julian stared at the countdown.
Thirty seconds.
Twenty.
Ten.
Then the lights died.
The upload stopped.
Marcus laughed.
“Goodbye.”
He pulled out a gun.
But Julian was faster.
A single shot.
Marcus dropped.
Silence.
Cassandra rushed to Lily.
Adrian moved toward his father.
Marcus was still alive.
Barely.
He looked at Julian.
“You think this ends with me?”
Julian said nothing.
Marcus laughed.
“Look at your daughter.”
Lily was crying.
“Ask her who taught her the final spin.”
Julian turned.
Lily looked at him.
Her tiny hands were shaking.
“Mommy.”
Julian crouched.
“Which mommy?”
Lily pointed toward the darkness.
A woman stepped forward.
Julian stopped.
Claire.
Alive.
Blood covered her white coat.
Julian stared in disbelief.
“No.”
Claire smiled through tears.
“I’m sorry.”
Cassandra covered her mouth.
Adrian stepped backward.
“How?”
Marcus laughed from the floor.
“I knew you wouldn’t believe it.”
Claire looked at him.
“You drugged me.”
“I needed everyone to think you were dead.”
Julian’s eyes filled with tears.
“You let me believe you died.”
“I had to.”
“Why?”
Claire walked toward him.
“Because Marcus had another plan.”
“What plan?”
She looked at Lily.
“He wanted her to dance in front of the entire family.”
Julian frowned.
“Why?”
“Because the final spin opens the Black Ledger.”
Everyone stared.
Claire continued.
“The dance was designed by Vincent.”
Julian finally understood.
The challenge at the ballroom had not been random.
Cassandra had unknowingly recreated the exact environment required.
The champagne.
The music.
The dance.
The final spin.
Everything.
Marcus had arranged it.
He had used Cassandra to activate the sequence.
“But why would he poison Cassandra?”
“She wasn’t supposed to survive.”
Julian looked at Cassandra.
She lowered her head.
“I knew.”
Julian turned.
“What?”
“I knew there was poison in the champagne.”
“But you drank it.”
“I had a protective dose.”
Julian stared.
Cassandra smiled sadly.
“I made a bet too.”
“What bet?”
“That I could save you.”
The Black Ledger suddenly came back online.
TRANSFER COMPLETE.
Every file had been sent.
Not to the police.
Not to the government.
To the public.
Millions of devices across the world received the data.
Politicians panicked.
Bank accounts froze.
Phones exploded with calls.
Marcus stared at the screen.
His empire collapsed in sixty seconds.
But he only laughed.
Julian looked at him.
“What’s funny?”
Marcus smiled.
“You still haven’t found the real secret.”
Julian stepped closer.
“What secret?”
Marcus’s eyes moved toward Claire.
Then Lily.
Then back to Julian.
“The girl who danced tonight…”
He laughed.
“Isn’t Lily Bennett.”
Julian froze.
Claire’s face changed.
Marcus whispered:
May you like
“She’s someone else.”
Then his heart monitor flatlined.
