Chapter 12 - THE ESCAPEThe escape began at 2:13 a.m.

Not with guns.
Not with explosions.
With a light turning red.
Julian’s lawyer had bribed no one.
He had done something much smarter.
He had exposed the prison’s security weakness.
Three seconds of darkness.
That was enough.
Julian moved.
He knocked out one guard.
Stole the access card.
Ran through the service corridor.
At the end of the hallway stood Cassandra.
She held a car key.
“You really escaped.”
Julian stared.
“You helped.”
“I owe Claire.”
They drove through the city.
No police sirens.
No headlights.
No witnesses.
At an abandoned church, Julian found Nora.
And Lily.
Alive.
Julian rushed toward her.
Lily ran into his arms.
He held her tightly.
“I knew you’d come.”
Julian closed his eyes.
“I’ll always come.”
Nora cried.
“We have minutes.”
“Why?”
“Marcus found us.”
Julian looked toward the church doors.
“How?”
Nora pointed at Lily’s ankle.
The tracking device had been removed.
But someone had followed them anyway.
Adrian appeared.
“He’s coming.”
Julian asked:
“Where’s Claire?”
No one answered.
He already knew.
Dead.
But then Lily reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a tiny object.
A silver ballerina.
Julian recognized it.
“Where did you get this?”
“Mommy gave it to me.”
Julian stared.
“Your mommy?”
Lily nodded.
“She said you would know.”
Julian opened the ballerina.
Inside was another memory card.
His hands began shaking.
They found a laptop.
The video loaded.
Claire appeared.
But this time she was sitting beside Marcus.
Julian froze.
Claire looked into the camera.
“If you’re watching this, then I’m already gone.”
Marcus sat beside her.
But he looked younger.
Healthy.
Smiling.
Then Claire said something no one expected.
“Julian was never the target.”
Marcus nodded.
“The target was Lily.”
Julian stared.
Claire continued.
“But not because she is my daughter.”
Marcus looked at the camera.
“She is the key.”
“To what?” Julian asked the screen.
Claire answered:
“The Black Ledger.”
Julian’s face changed.
The legendary ledger said to contain evidence of every person Marcus controlled.
Politicians.
Judges.
Police.
Bankers.
Everyone.
Claire continued.
“Vincent hid it inside a place Marcus would never search.”
“Where?”
Claire looked directly at the camera.
“Inside Lily’s dance.”
Julian froze.
The dance.
The spin.
The exact sequence.
It was not a dance.
It was a code.
Lily looked up.
“Daddy?”
Julian knelt.
“Can you show me the dance?”
Lily smiled.
“Yes.”
She stood.
One arm above her head.
The other low.
Two spins.
Heel lifted.
Julian stared.
The final position wasn’t the same.
There was something new.
A movement Claire had never shown him.
A small twist of the wrist.
Julian gasped.
“That’s a map.”
Cassandra stared.
“A map to where?”
Julian looked toward Lily.
“The DeLuca mausoleum.”
Then every light in the church turned off.
A voice echoed through the darkness.
May you like
“You finally solved it.”
Marcus.
