Chapter 1 - THE FINAL SPIN“If you can dance better than me, I’ll give you one million dollars.”

Cassandra Vale’s voice cut through the DeLuca ballroom.

Nearly three hundred powerful guests turned toward the marble floor.

At the center stood Lily Bennett, four years old, barefoot, wearing a faded blue dress. Her mother, Nora Bennett, was a maid in the DeLuca estate.

Cassandra, the future Mrs. DeLuca and a former ballet dancer, smiled confidently.

She had challenged a child because Lily had made one innocent comment.

“My mama says dancing is prettier when you look happy.”

The room had laughed.

Nora immediately knelt beside her daughter.

“You don’t have to do this.”

Lily looked at the orchestra.

“Is it a real dance, Mama?”

Nora swallowed her fear.

“Dance the way we dance in the kitchen. Don’t dance for them.”

Lily removed her shoes.

Then the music began.

At first, she simply swayed.

Then she turned.

Julian DeLuca froze.

That movement.

One arm above her head. The other stretched low. Two quick spins. One heel lifted at the end.

Julian had seen it once before.

Four years ago.

Claire Arden had danced that exact turn in his kitchen before mysteriously disappearing from his life.

He had searched hospitals, airports, morgues, and every city she had ever mentioned.

Nothing.

For four years, he had forced himself to believe Claire was gone.

Now her dance was standing barefoot in front of him.

Lily spun again.

Her face lit up with pure happiness.

The laughter disappeared.

Nobody spoke.

Even Cassandra stared.

Then Lily made the final turn.

She stumbled, caught herself, laughed, and placed one hand over her heart.

Silence.

Then the ballroom erupted in applause.

Cassandra slowly removed her heels.

She walked toward Lily and dropped to her knees.

“I spent thirty years believing another girl’s praise meant I had lost something,” she whispered. “You reminded me what I lost.”

She stood and faced the room.

“I made a promise. Lily Bennett will receive one million dollars. No conditions.”

But Julian wasn’t listening.

He was staring at Nora.

There was fear in her eyes.

Not the fear of losing a job.

The fear of a secret being discovered.

Before he could question her, Cassandra raised her champagne glass.

“To the only dancer brave enough to be happy.”

Everyone drank.

Everyone except Julian.

One second passed.

Then Cassandra dropped her glass.

It shattered.

Her body went rigid.

She tried to speak.

Nothing came out.

Her knees buckled.

Julian caught her before she hit the floor.

“CALL A DOCTOR!”

The ballroom erupted.

Security rushed in. Guests backed away. Nora grabbed Lily and turned her daughter’s face against her chest.

Then Nora noticed Thomas Bell.

The old butler stood near the service door.

He wasn’t looking at Cassandra.

He was staring at Julian’s untouched champagne.

For the first time in thirty-two years, Thomas looked terrified.

Then he disappeared into the shadows.

Eleven minutes later, Cassandra was rushed into Northwestern Memorial.

Julian followed the stretcher, gripping her hand.

Her heart rhythm was unstable.

A paramedic looked at the monitor.

“Possible cardiac toxin.”

Julian stopped.

Someone had poisoned Cassandra.

And the only glass he knew for certain was untouched...

was his.

For four years, Julian had feared that Claire’s disappearance was connected to the DeLuca family.

Now a four-year-old girl had brought Claire’s dance back into his life.

And someone had just tried to kill the woman wearing Cassandra’s toast.
