Chapter 12 - The Daughter of the Dead KingThe Moretti estate had been locked for twenty years. Tonight, its doors opened for Sophia.

The Moretti estate stood on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic.

No lights.

No guards.

No cars.

It looked abandoned.

But Sophia knew better.

Enzo parked near the main gate.

Matteo sat in the back, pale from the gunshot.

Sophia turned around.

"You can stay here."

Matteo smiled.

"No."

"You'll bleed through the seat."

"Then the seat will survive."

Enzo glanced back.

"Ready?"

Sophia wasn't.

She nodded anyway.

They entered.

The house smelled like dust and salt.

Portraits covered the walls.

Moretti men.

Generations.

Kings of an empire that had once controlled half the coast.

Sophia stopped at one portrait.

Julian Moretti.

Young.

Handsome.

Green eyes.

Her green eyes.

She touched the frame.

"That's him."

Matteo nodded.

"He looked like you."

Enzo watched her.

She felt something strange.

Not love.

Not grief.

Recognition.

As though she had been looking at herself through another century.

A door slammed upstairs.

They moved.

The dining room was empty.

A tape recorder sat on the table.

It clicked on.

Marcus Castellan's voice.

"Sophia."

She closed her eyes.

"If you're listening to this inside the Moretti house, then the truth has finally caught up with you."

The tape continued.

"I lied to you."

Sophia's eyes filled.

"Your entire childhood was built on a lie."

A pause.

"But not because I didn't love you."

The recording crackled.

"I loved you enough to let you hate me."

Sophia covered her mouth.

"Julian Moretti was your father."

She knew.

Still, hearing it broke something inside her.

"He was killed before you were born."

Marcus continued.

"Your mother believed the Morettis would kill their own heir to prevent a war."

"So I took you."

Sophia stared at the recorder.

"I told the world you were my daughter."

A pause.

"You were."

His voice became softer.

"Blood makes a person related. Love makes them family."

Sophia cried silently.

Then the recording changed.

"Now the part I never told you."

Enzo stepped closer.

Marcus continued.

"Julian did not die because of the Valentes."

Sophia froze.

"He died because he discovered our father."

Enzo looked at Matteo.

"Our father."

"Yes."

"Julian discovered that the entire war between Moretti and Valente had been manufactured."

Sophia frowned.

"Manufactured?"

Marcus answered.

"Men were paid to attack both sides."

"Who?"

A long silence.

Then:

"Daniel Vale."

Sophia's eyes widened.

"Daniel Vale created the illusion of war so both families would need the same banking network."

"Money laundering."

"Power."

The tape continued.

"He controlled the courts. The banks. The police. He did not want peace."

Sophia whispered:

"So he kept us fighting."

"Yes."

The recording ended.

Silence.

Then Edward Vale's voice came from the balcony.

"Your father was almost right."

They looked up.

Edward stood there.

Beside him, Sophia's mother.

Alive.

Edward held a gun to her head.

"You missed one piece."

Enzo raised his weapon.

Edward smiled.

"Put it down."

"No."

Edward pressed the barrel against her mother's temple.

Sophia shouted:

"Enzo."

He slowly lowered his gun.

Edward smiled.

"Good."

Matteo stepped forward.

"What do you want?"

"Everything."

Edward walked down the stairs.

"The Morettis."

"The Valentes."

"The courts."

"The banks."

"The ledger."

He looked at Sophia.

"And the girl who connects them all."

Sophia stared.

"You don't want me."

"Of course I do."

"Why?"

"Because if you die, the war begins again."

Sophia understood.

Edward needed her alive.

She was the only living heir connected to both sides.

She was leverage.

She was a treaty made flesh.

Edward smiled.

"Your father taught you one thing I could never understand."

"What?"

"Mercy."

He gestured to a door.

"Open it."

Sophia approached.

Inside was a small room.

A piano.

Old.

Dusty.

Black.

Her mother's voice trembled.

"Don't."

Sophia looked at the keys.

She understood.

Another map.

Another code.

Another secret.

She sat.

Edward watched.

"Play."

Sophia placed her hands on the keys.

This time, she wasn't afraid.

She played.

The music moved through the house.

One sequence.

Another.

A hidden panel opened beneath the piano.

Inside was a metal box.

Edward's expression changed.

Sophia reached for it.

Then Enzo shouted:

"Don't!"

She stopped.

A red light blinked inside the box.

Explosives.

Edward laughed.

"Good instincts."

Sophia looked at him.

"Who planted it?"

Edward's smile disappeared.

"I did."

The timer began.

00:59.

Edward stepped backward.

May you like

"Welcome home, Sophia."

And the door slammed shut.
