Chapter 5 - The House That Rose from the AshesThree years ago, Sophia watched this house burn. Today, someone was living inside it.

The address was thirty miles outside Manhattan.
Enzo drove.
Sophia sat beside him.
Neither spoke for most of the journey.
The city disappeared behind them.
Then the highway narrowed.
Trees crowded both sides.
Rain began tapping against the windshield.
"You shouldn't come," Sophia said.
"You shouldn't go alone."
"They asked for me."
"Exactly."
She looked at him.
"You're difficult."
"So I've been told."
She almost smiled.
It disappeared quickly.
The house emerged through the trees.
Sophia stopped breathing.
It was impossible.
The Castellan residence stood exactly as she remembered it.
White stone.
Black shutters.
The iron gate.
Even the dead oak beside the driveway.
Except nothing was burned.
No charred walls.
No collapsed roof.
No black skeleton of a piano room.
It was whole.
Perfect.
Enzo parked.
"Stay behind me."
"No."
He looked at her.
"I'm done hiding behind people."
Something in her tone made him nod.
They approached the front door.
Unlocked.
Inside, the smell stopped Sophia cold.
Lavender.
Her mother's perfume.
"Mom?"
No answer.
They moved through the foyer.
Everything was arranged exactly as it had been before the fire.
Photographs.
Paintings.
The grandfather clock.
On the piano table sat a vase containing fresh white roses.
Sophia touched one.
Still wet.
"Someone is here."
Enzo nodded.
A sound came from upstairs.
Footsteps.
Sophia looked up.
A woman's voice floated down.
"Sophia."
She froze.
Her mother's voice.
Exactly as she remembered it.
"Mom?"
Enzo grabbed her arm.
"Wait."
Sophia pulled free.
The sound came again.
"Come upstairs."
She ran.
Enzo followed.
The second-floor hallway was empty.
One bedroom door stood open.
Her mother's room.
Sophia stepped inside.
A woman stood at the window.
Gray hair.
White dress.
Thin shoulders.
Sophia's heart broke.
"Mom?"
The woman turned.
It wasn't her mother.
It was an elderly maid.
Sophia stumbled backward.
The woman smiled sadly.
"You look just like her."
"Who are you?"
"Agnes."
She pointed toward the bed.
A photograph lay there.
Sophia's mother.
Holding Sophia as a baby.
Agnes was beside them.
"I worked for your family."
"Where is my mother?"
Agnes looked away.
"Alive."
Sophia stopped breathing.
"Where?"
"Not here."
"Then why bring me?"
Agnes looked at Enzo.
"Because he needed to come too."
Enzo's expression darkened.
"You know me."
"I know your father."
Sophia frowned.
"My father?"
Agnes nodded.
"He came here the night of the fire."
Enzo stepped forward.
"Who started it?"
Agnes whispered:
"A man wearing your family's ring."
Silence.
Sophia looked at Enzo.
"What does that mean?"
Enzo stared at his own hand.
The Valente family ring.
Black onyx.
Silver snake.
His expression changed.
"My ring was stolen three years ago."
Agnes shook her head.
"It wasn't stolen."
Enzo stared.
"You gave it away."
"I never..."
"You don't remember because you were drugged."
Sophia felt a chill.
"Who?"
Agnes reached into a drawer.
She took out a small notebook.
Inside were medication records.
A date.
Three years ago.
Enzo's name.
A sedative.
His signature.
Sophia looked at him.
"You were drugged."
Enzo's eyes hardened.
"By whom?"
Agnes answered.
"Your brother."
The room went silent.
Matteo.
Again.
Sophia whispered:
"You said he betrayed you."
"I was wrong."
Agnes closed the notebook.
"Matteo wasn't working against your family."
"Then what was he doing?"
"Protecting it."
She opened another drawer.
Inside was a videotape.
Old.
Labelled:
FOR SOPHIA - WHEN SHE IS READY
Sophia's hands trembled.
A television in the corner still worked.
Agnes inserted the tape.
The screen flickered.
Then her father appeared.
Older.
Tired.
Alive.
Sophia covered her mouth.
Her father looked directly into the camera.
"My daughter."
Her knees nearly gave out.
"By the time you see this, I will probably be dead."
Enzo stood very still.
Her father continued.
"The people who come after you will tell you that Lorenzo Valente betrayed me."
Sophia looked at Enzo.
"He did not."
Enzo's jaw tightened.
"Nor did Matteo."
The video continued.
"I created the Black Ledger because the truth had to survive even if I didn't."
Sophia's eyes filled.
"But the ledger isn't what they fear."
Her father leaned toward the camera.
"There is one name in it that can destroy everything."
The screen flickered.
A distorted image appeared.
A man's silhouette.
Sophia stared.
Her father whispered:
"If he finds you, do not trust anyone."
The tape ended.
A beat of silence.
Then the television switched itself back on.
A live camera feed replaced the static.
Sophia saw a room.
A woman sat in a chair.
Hands bound.
Head lowered.
Sophia screamed.
"Mom!"
Enzo stepped toward the screen.
The camera zoomed in.
Her mother's face lifted.
Bruised.
Terrified.
But alive.
Then a man's voice came through the speakers.
"You have ten minutes."
A countdown appeared.
10:00.
09:59.
09:58.
Then the voice added:
"And bring the ledger."
Enzo looked at Sophia.
Sophia looked back.
"We don't have it."
A second figure appeared behind her mother.
A man.
Tall.
Black suit.
Silver ring.
Sophia recognized the ring instantly.
Enzo's family ring.
The man leaned into the camera.
He smiled.
"Hello, Sophia."
She couldn't breathe.
It was Matteo Valente.
And he was alive.CHAPTER 6-The Brother They BuriedMatteo Valente had been dead for three years. Or so Enzo had believed.
The countdown reached 08:41.
Enzo stared at the screen.
Matteo stood behind their mother.
Older.
Thinner.
A scar stretched from his temple to his jaw.
But unmistakably him.
Enzo whispered his name.
"Matteo."
The man on the screen smiled.
"Hello, brother."
Sophia looked at Enzo.
He didn't move.
For the first time since she had met him, he looked completely human.
Not the Butcher of Brooklyn.
Not the man who controlled half the city's underground.
Just an older brother looking at someone he thought he had lost.
"Why?" Enzo asked.
Matteo laughed softly.
"Three years and that's all you have?"
"You were dead."
"That's what they wanted you to think."
"You left me."
"I was trying to save you."
Enzo stepped closer to the screen.
"From what?"
Matteo's smile disappeared.
"From yourself."
The feed cut.
08:03.
Sophia turned toward Agnes.
"Where is the ledger?"
Agnes shook her head.
"I don't know."
"We had it."
"Not anymore."
Sophia looked at Enzo.
"I didn't take it."
"I know."
"Then where is it?"
He thought.
"Whoever stole it took it from someone who knew about the piano."
Sophia understood.
"Rick."
"Probably."
"He was working for Matteo."
"Maybe."
She frowned.
"He said the ledger disappeared."
"He could have been lying."
A crash came from downstairs.
Enzo drew his weapon.
"Stay here."
Sophia shook her head.
They descended together.
The foyer was empty.
A window stood open.
Agnes ran toward it.
"Someone left."
On the floor lay a single black glove.
Enzo picked it up.
There was a silver thread sewn into the wrist.
He recognized it.
"Black Thorn."
Sophia frowned.
"What is that?"
"A private security company."
"You know them?"
"My family used them."
"Before or after the fire?"
Enzo looked at her.
"Before."
He called Rocco.
"Find every active Black Thorn employee from three years ago."
"What happened?"
"Do it."
He hung up.
Sophia's mother was still on the screen.
The countdown.
05:22.
"We need the ledger."
Enzo opened the piano.
He examined every panel.
Nothing.
Sophia sat down.
Her father's video repeated in her mind.
The ledger isn't what they fear.
She closed her eyes.
The music.
The code.
The missing notes.
She played a few silent keys with her fingers.
Then stopped.
One sequence from her father's composition had been deliberately omitted.
She stood.
"Enzo."
"What?"
"My father hid the ledger."
"I know."
"No. He hid the real ledger."
Enzo stared.
"The one we found was a decoy."
She returned to the piano.
"Look."
She pressed three keys.
The left side of the piano's frame shifted.
Another compartment opened.
Inside was a cassette tape.
And a small metal cylinder.
Enzo took the cylinder.
"What is this?"
"Film."
She looked at the cassette.
"What if the ledger isn't paper?"
Enzo understood.
"Photographs."
They found an old projector in a cabinet.
The film slid into place.
The first image appeared on the wall.
A list.
Then another.
Names.
Bank accounts.
Dates.
Judges.
Police commanders.
Federal officials.
Shipping companies.
Mafia families.
Sophia looked at Enzo.
"There are hundreds."
Enzo shook his head.
"Keep watching."
The images continued.
Then one stopped.
A single name.
EDWARD VALE.
Sophia frowned.
"Who's that?"
Enzo's face changed.
"The Attorney General."
She stared.
"He's been in office for fifteen years."
"And he was your father's superior."
The next image appeared.
Edward Vale shaking hands with a much younger man.
Sophia's stomach dropped.
"That's impossible."
Enzo looked closer.
The younger man was Matteo.
Sophia stared.
"Why was Matteo meeting him?"
"No idea."
The next photograph appeared.
A bank transfer.
Edward Vale.
Lorenzo Valente.
Sophia stepped back.
"Maybe your family really was involved."
Enzo didn't answer.
Another image.
Matteo handing something to Judge Castellan.
Another.
Her father handing a sealed envelope to Enzo.
Sophia looked at him.
"You said you never knew my father."
"I knew him."
"Then why did you lie?"
"I didn't."
"You just said..."
"I meant I never knew he trusted me."
Enzo looked at the photograph.
"I knew he was using me as insurance."
Sophia's eyes narrowed.
"Insurance against what?"
The projector flickered.
One final image.
Judge Castellan.
Edward Vale.
Matteo.
And a fourth man.
Sophia stared.
She knew him.
She had seen him in the Gilded Cage.
A quiet customer who sat at the back every Thursday.
Her stomach turned.
"The pianist."
Enzo looked at her.
"What?"
"Arthur."
"The old piano player."
She nodded.
"He was at the club the night the fire happened."
Enzo's phone rang.
Rocco.
"Boss. We found Black Thorn's former director."
"Where?"
A pause.
Then Rocco spoke.
"He was killed an hour ago."
Enzo closed his eyes.
"What did he leave?"
"One message."
"What?"
Rocco's voice dropped.
"He said Arthur isn't a pianist."
The feed on the television suddenly returned.
Matteo appeared again.
The countdown showed 02:11.
He looked directly at Sophia.
"You're getting closer."
Sophia stepped forward.
"What do you want?"
Matteo smiled.
"Not the ledger."
"Then what?"
"I want what your father buried beneath the courthouse."
Sophia's heart stopped.
"What did he bury?"
Matteo leaned toward the camera.
"The truth about who burned your family."
The countdown hit 00:00.
May you like
The screen went black.
Then an explosion shook the house.
