Chapter 14 - The Judge Beneath the CityThe man Sophia had mourned for three years was alive beneath the city, and dying fast.

They raced back to Manhattan.
The courthouse was surrounded by police.
But none of them wore city badges.
Enzo looked through the windshield.
"Vale's men."
Rocco checked his weapon.
"How many?"
"Too many."
Sophia looked at the courthouse.
Her father's life had been buried beneath that building.
Not his body.
His truth.
She looked at Enzo.
"We go through the basement."
He nodded.
The firefight lasted minutes.
Then they reached the hidden chamber.
The steel door was open.
A hallway stretched ahead.
Fluorescent lights flickered.
Every thirty feet, another security camera.
They moved quietly.
At the end was a locked medical room.
Sophia heard breathing.
She opened the door.
Her father lay on a hospital bed.
Alive.
Older.
Scarred.
But alive.
His eyes opened.
"Sophia."
She froze.
Then rushed to him.
He smiled.
"My little pianist."
She cried into his chest.
"I thought you died."
"I did too."
She laughed through tears.
"How?"
He looked at Enzo.
"Lorenzo."
Enzo stepped forward.
Marcus nodded.
"He found me after the fire."
Sophia looked at Enzo.
"You knew."
"I knew there was a chance."
"You kept him from me."
"Your father asked me to."
Marcus interrupted.
"It was my fault."
Sophia sat beside him.
"Why?"
"Because I needed you to disappear."
"From Edward?"
"From everyone."
Marcus looked at the ceiling.
"Daniel Vale created the war between our families."
"And Edward?"
"A son trying to inherit his father's empire."
"Then who is Arthur?"
Marcus smiled faintly.
"A witness."
"The piano player."
"The man who stayed alive because nobody thought he mattered."
Sophia remembered.
Arthur's tired face.
His hands.
He had never actually played much.
Because he was watching.
Not performing.
Watching.
Marcus reached beneath his pillow.
He pulled out a photograph.
The same fourth man.
Daniel Vale.
Julian Moretti.
Enzo's father.
Marcus.
Together.
Four men.
Before the war.
"Daniel was our friend."
Sophia looked at him.
"What happened?"
"He learned friendship was less valuable than power."
"And he killed Julian."
"Yes."
"Your father?"
"Eventually."
Enzo stepped closer.
"Did my father know?"
Marcus looked at him.
"Not until the end."
Enzo closed his eyes.
Marcus turned toward Sophia.
"There is something else."
"What?"
"The final ledger is not the drive."
Sophia looked at the black device.
"Then what is it?"
He pointed toward her.
"You."
She shook her head.
Again.
Everyone kept saying that.
She carried the ledger.
She was the key.
She connected both families.
"What does that mean?"
Marcus smiled sadly.
"I encoded the final proof into your music."
"I know."
"Not all of it."
Sophia stared.
"Then what is missing?"
"The last song."
She remembered the fire.
Her father's study.
The piano.
A song he'd never allowed her to finish.
She had hated it.
It was too dark.
Too difficult.
She had stopped halfway through it.
"What was it called?"
Marcus's eyes filled with tears.
"Your mother's lullaby."
Sophia's heart broke.
Her mother.
The lullaby.
The missing final composition.
"The code is inside it."
"Where?"
"In your memory."
Sophia closed her eyes.
She could hear it.
Five notes.
Three.
Two.
Then a final descending sequence.
She whispered the notes.
Marcus smiled.
"Good."
The lights went out.
A gunshot.
Enzo turned.
Marcus jerked.
Blood spread across his shirt.
"NO!"
Sophia screamed.
Enzo fired into the darkness.
A door slammed.
Rocco shouted:
"He's getting away!"
Sophia held her father.
"Stay with me."
Marcus looked at her.
"Listen."
She leaned closer.
"Daniel doesn't want the ledger."
He coughed.
"He wants you to play the final song."
"Why?"
"Because the final note..."
He smiled.
"...names the killer."
His eyes closed.
Sophia shook him.
"Dad?"
No response.
She broke down.
Then, from the hallway, a slow clap began.
Daniel Vale stepped into the light.
He looked almost exactly like the photographs.
Elegant.
Calm.
Untouched by age.
He smiled at Sophia.
"You finally remembered."
Sophia stood.
Rage replaced grief.
"You killed him."
Daniel nodded.
"I did."
Enzo raised his weapon.
Daniel smiled.
"Kill me, Lorenzo."
He opened his arms.
"Then you'll never learn which one of your fathers ordered the war."
Sophia stared.
"One of them?"
May you like
Daniel smiled.
"There were two."
