CHAPTER 8: THE TUNNEL OF SHADOWS

The maintenance tunnel swallowed the light.

Concrete walls stretched ahead like the throat of a beast, slick with decades of moisture. Water dripped steadily from rusted pipes overhead, each drop echoing like a ticking clock.

Victor stepped inside first.

Pistol raised.

Every sense sharpened.

Behind him, Marcus signaled four elite guards to spread out.

"No one fires unless they have a clear shot," Victor said quietly.

"We need him alive."

The guards nodded.

The sniper had known the hospital layout.

He had known exactly where to shoot.

Not to kill.

To distract.

To buy a few seconds.

That meant one thing.

This operation had never been about Ethan's death.

It had been about taking him.

Alive.

Back at the loading dock...

Lily cradled Ethan against her chest.

The toddler's breathing was still shallow, but steadier than before.

His tiny fingers clung tightly to her sleeve, refusing to let go.

Dr. Harrison rushed in with a trauma team.

"We need to examine him immediately."

Lily hesitated.

"He just got him back..."

Victor looked over his shoulder.

"Go."

She nodded and followed the doctors.

As the medical team disappeared into the elevator, Ethan turned his head weakly.

His sleepy eyes searched for Victor.

"D...Da..."

Victor felt something tighten inside his chest.

"I'll be there."

The elevator doors closed.

Inside the tunnel...

Marcus suddenly raised a fist.

Everyone stopped.

A faint metallic click echoed somewhere ahead.

Victor's eyes narrowed.

"Don't move."

Marcus slowly aimed his flashlight toward the floor.

A thin wire stretched across the corridor.

Barely visible.

Connected to a fragmentation grenade hidden behind a broken utility panel.

Marcus exhaled slowly.

"Tripwire."

One guard carefully knelt.

Within thirty seconds he disconnected the device.

Victor studied it.

Military grade.

Not homemade.

"This wasn't Serena," Marcus muttered.

Victor nodded.

"She isn't trained for this."

"Someone else is leading."

They continued forward.

Two hundred yards deeper...

The tunnel split into three directions.

Marcus unfolded a digital map.

"The left tunnel leads to the subway maintenance system."

"The center connects to the old sewer network."

"The right exits near the river."

Victor looked around.

Then crouched.

Fresh mud.

Boot prints.

Three different sizes.

One smaller than the others.

Marcus frowned.

"A woman?"

Victor nodded.

"Serena."

He pointed toward another footprint.

"Larger."

"Probably our sniper."

"And this one..."

A third print.

Much deeper.

Heavier.

Someone carrying equipment.

Or...

Someone carrying ammunition.

Three people.

Working together.

Victor made his decision.

"Right tunnel."

Meanwhile...

Several miles away...

Inside an abandoned church converted into a temporary safehouse...

Serena paced back and forth.

She looked furious.

The hooded man stood near a stained-glass window.

"You lost the child."

Serena stopped.

"The hospital was compromised."

"You promised success."

"I promised an opportunity."

She folded her arms.

"And your sniper failed."

The hooded man's voice became colder.

"He wasn't there to kill Victor."

"He was there to delay him."

Serena laughed bitterly.

"Delay him?"

"He found Ethan in less than four minutes."

Silence.

The hooded man slowly removed his hood.

For the first time...

His face became visible.

Mid-fifties.

Sharp features.

Calm gray eyes.

No scars.

Nothing remarkable.

The kind of face people forgot the moment they looked away.

He smiled.

"You still underestimate Victor."

Serena frowned.

"I lived with him for three years."

"You lived beside him."

The man stepped closer.

"You never understood him."

"He doesn't chase people."

"He corners them."

She looked away.

"Then what do we do?"

The man calmly unfolded a city map.

"We stop running."

"We make him come to us."

Back in the tunnel...

Marcus's radio crackled.

"Boss."

Victor answered immediately.

"Report."

"It's Ethan."

Victor stopped walking.

"What happened?"

"The doctors found something."

His expression hardened.

"What?"

"A sedative."

Victor's grip tightened around his pistol.

Marcus continued.

"They believe someone injected him less than ten minutes before he was found."

Victor looked down the tunnel.

The kidnappers had planned for Ethan to remain unconscious during transport.

Professional.

Calculated.

He resumed walking.

Faster this time.

Ten minutes later...

The tunnel ended at an abandoned pumping station beneath the Chicago River.

The massive chamber was empty.

Or so it seemed.

Marcus scanned the room.

"No movement."

Victor didn't answer.

Something felt wrong.

Too clean.

Too quiet.

He slowly approached a metal table in the center of the room.

Resting on it...

A small black box.

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

"Don't touch it."

Victor examined the device.

No visible wires.

No timer.

Just a blinking green light.

A note rested beside it.

Victor unfolded the paper.

Three handwritten lines.

You protected him today.

Can you protect him forever?

Look up.

Victor's eyes shot toward the ceiling.

"DOWN!"

The shout echoed through the chamber.

Everyone dove for cover.

An instant later...

A deafening explosion tore through the pumping station.

Concrete rained from above.

Steel beams groaned.

Dust swallowed everything.

Marcus was thrown against a wall.

One guard disappeared beneath falling debris.

Another cried out in pain.

Victor rolled behind a massive support column.

His ears rang.

The room filled with smoke.

Then...

Through the haze...

He saw a silhouette standing on an overhead catwalk.

The man who had removed his hood.

Calmly watching the destruction.

He wasn't holding a rifle.

He wasn't aiming a weapon.

He simply smiled.

Then, in a voice loud enough to echo through the ruined chamber, he called out:

"Victor..."

"It's been twenty-two years."

Victor slowly stood.

Recognition flashed across his face.

"No..."

The stranger spread his arms slightly.

"You've grown into exactly the man your father feared you'd become."

Marcus looked from one man to the other.

"You know him?"

Victor's voice was barely above a whisper.

"I buried him."

The stranger smiled wider.

"That's the interesting thing about funerals."

He tapped his chest.

"They only work..."

"...when the body inside the coffin is real."

The chamber fell silent.

Victor's mind raced.

Twenty-two years earlier...

The official report had said the man died in a warehouse fire alongside Victor's father.

Victor had attended the funeral.

He had watched the coffin lowered into the ground.

Yet now...

The dead man stood before him.

Alive.

Smiling.

And carrying the serpent ring on his right hand.

The stranger gave a courteous nod.

"My name means nothing anymore."

"But once..."

He looked directly into Victor's eyes.

"...you called me..."

May you like

"Uncle Daniel."
