CHAPTER 14: THE EMPTY GRAVE

The limousine disappeared into the rain.

Marcus's tablet continued tracking the glowing signal.

One destination.

St. Gabriel Cemetery.

Victor watched the blinking dot in silence.

Twenty-two years.

For twenty-two years, Daniel Ashcroft's grave had been one of the few places Victor visited every year without fail.

He never missed the anniversary.

He always left white roses.

He always stood there alone.

Now Adrian was driving there...

In the middle of the night.

Marcus looked uneasy.

"Boss..."

Victor buttoned his coat.

"We're going."

Twenty Minutes Later

The cemetery gates creaked open.

Rain drifted across hundreds of weathered headstones.

Moonlight struggled through thick clouds.

The Blackwood convoy stopped outside the entrance.

Victor raised one hand.

"No headlights."

"No radios."

"No unnecessary movement."

Marcus nodded.

"Silent approach."

Six elite guards spread through the cemetery like shadows.

Victor and Marcus advanced toward the oldest section.

Row C.

Plot 17.

Daniel Ashcroft.

The signal stopped moving.

Marcus checked the tablet.

"He's here."

Victor looked ahead.

A single lantern glowed through the darkness.

Someone was standing in front of Daniel's grave.

Adrian.

He wasn't alone.

A hooded figure waited beside him.

The same height.

The same calm posture.

Victor couldn't see the face.

Marcus whispered,

"The Council?"

Victor answered quietly.

"Maybe."

The two men stopped beneath an ancient oak tree.

Rain muffled their voices.

Marcus activated a directional microphone.

Static.

Then...

Fragments.

"...failed..."

"...Victor..."

"...letter..."

"...vault..."

Victor's eyes narrowed.

The vault.

Daniel had mentioned it before he died.

The hooded man spoke again.

This time more clearly.

"We underestimated him."

Adrian replied,

"No."

"We underestimated Ethan."

Victor froze.

Ethan.

The hooded man continued,

"The child remembers."

Adrian lowered his head.

"Children forget."

The hooded figure answered immediately.

"Not this one."

Marcus slowly adjusted the microphone.

The sound sharpened.

Adrian sighed.

"I warned you years ago."

The hooded figure remained silent.

Adrian continued,

"You should have finished Isabella when you had the chance."

Victor's entire body became rigid.

Marcus looked at him in shock.

Adrian...

Had just admitted Isabella had been murdered.

Victor started forward.

Marcus grabbed his arm.

"Not yet."

Victor's jaw clenched.

Every instinct screamed to end it now.

But Marcus was right.

They needed everything.

Every word.

Every confession.

The hooded figure spoke again.

"Victor still believes Serena acted alone."

Adrian laughed quietly.

"He won't for long."

"You've lost Serena."

"We've lost Daniel."

"The hospital failed."

The hooded figure folded his arms.

"So tell me something useful."

Adrian looked toward Daniel's headstone.

Then he said the sentence Victor would never forget.

"I should have killed Victor when he was eight."

Marcus closed his eyes.

Even after everything...

Hearing those words was different.

This wasn't betrayal.

This was the destruction of an entire lifetime.

Victor stepped from the shadows.

"Then you should have."

His voice echoed across the cemetery.

Adrian spun around.

The color drained from his face.

"Victor..."

The hooded figure immediately reached inside his coat.

Marcus shouted,

"Gun!"

Two Blackwood snipers fired simultaneously.

The hooded man dove behind a monument.

Bullets shattered marble.

Adrian raised both hands.

"Wait!"

Victor didn't.

He kept walking.

One step.

Then another.

Rain soaked his coat.

His pistol never wavered.

"You poisoned my wife."

Adrian's voice trembled.

"It wasn't supposed to happen like that."

Victor stopped.

Twenty feet separated them.

"You admit it."

Adrian closed his eyes.

"I carried the glass."

Victor whispered,

"You carried the glass..."

Adrian nodded.

"But I didn't know."

Victor frowned.

"What?"

"I thought it was a sedative."

Silence.

Adrian continued.

"They told me Isabella only needed to sleep."

"They said negotiations would happen while she was unconscious."

Marcus stared.

"You expect us to believe that?"

Adrian looked broken.

"I believed them."

Victor's voice became dangerously calm.

"And when she died?"

Adrian swallowed hard.

"I realized..."

"...I'd been used."

Suddenly...

The hooded man threw something across the ground.

A smoke grenade.

The cemetery disappeared beneath thick gray clouds.

Marcus fired.

Guards rushed forward.

Someone screamed.

Another gunshot echoed.

Victor ignored the chaos.

His eyes never left Adrian.

He lunged.

The two men crashed into the muddy ground.

Victor's fist slammed into Adrian's jaw.

Once.

Twice.

A lifetime of restrained grief exploded into every strike.

"You watched me bury her!"

Another punch.

"You held my son!"

Another.

"You called yourself family!"

Adrian never fought back.

Blood poured from his split lip.

"I deserve this."

Victor grabbed his collar.

"No."

"You deserve the truth."

The smoke slowly cleared.

Marcus shouted,

"The hooded man escaped!"

Victor barely heard him.

He looked down at Adrian.

"Who is he?"

Adrian coughed.

"I don't know his real name."

Victor's grip tightened.

"Lie again..."

"...and this ends here."

Adrian shook his head.

"It's true."

"We only knew him by one title."

Victor waited.

Adrian whispered,

"The Caretaker."

At that exact moment...

A deafening metallic groan echoed beneath their feet.

Marcus looked down.

"Boss..."

The ground...

Was moving.

Daniel's headstone slowly slid sideways.

Revealing...

A narrow stone staircase descending into complete darkness.

Marcus stared in disbelief.

"The grave..."

Victor finished the sentence.

May you like

"...was never a grave."
