CHAPTER 15: THE VAULT BENEATH THE GRAVE

The cemetery fell silent.

Even the rain seemed to hesitate.

Daniel's granite headstone continued sliding aside with a deep grinding sound, revealing a narrow staircase carved into ancient stone.

Cold air drifted upward.

Air that hadn't touched the surface in decades.

Marcus stared.

"There really is a vault..."

Victor looked down into the darkness.

Daniel's final gift.

The Last Vault.

The place his father had hidden so carefully that even the Blackwood family believed it was only a legend.

Behind them, Adrian remained on his knees, blood dripping onto the wet grass.

He stared at the opening.

"I've searched for it..."

"...for twenty-two years."

Victor turned.

"You knew it existed."

Adrian nodded.

"I knew your father built something."

"I never found it."

Victor studied his face.

For the first time since the cemetery confrontation began...

Adrian looked genuinely defeated.

Not frightened.

Defeated.

Marcus approached the staircase.

"No heat signatures."

"No electronic signals."

Victor reached into his coat.

Daniel's brass key.

The heavy metal felt cold in his hand.

He looked toward two elite guards.

"Stay with Adrian."

"If he moves..."

The guard nodded.

"I understand."

Victor and Marcus began descending.

One step.

Then another.

The stone staircase spiraled nearly forty feet underground.

Every footstep echoed through the narrow passage.

Finally...

They reached an enormous steel door.

No keypad.

No fingerprint scanner.

Only an old mechanical lock.

At its center...

The Blackwood family crest.

Marcus looked toward the key.

"This is it."

Victor inserted the brass key.

For several seconds...

Nothing happened.

Then...

A loud metallic click echoed through the tunnel.

The vault door slowly opened.

The lights turned on automatically.

Not electric.

Oil lamps.

One after another.

As though someone had designed the room to awaken the moment the door opened.

Marcus looked around in amazement.

Shelves lined every wall.

Thousands of documents.

Leather-bound journals.

Maps.

Photographs.

Cassette tapes.

Film reels.

Locked steel boxes.

Victor whispered,

"My father built an archive..."

Marcus shook his head.

"No."

"He built insurance."

At the center of the chamber stood a large oak desk.

Perfectly preserved.

A single envelope rested on top.

Unlike Daniel's letter...

This envelope bore another familiar handwriting.

Alexander Blackwood.

Victor's father.

His hands trembled slightly as he opened it.

Inside...

Only one page.

My son.

If you are standing here, then I have already lost.

I hoped you would never need this room.

If you do... it means the people I trusted failed you.

Victor swallowed.

Marcus quietly stepped away, giving him privacy.

The Consortium cannot be defeated with bullets.

Only with truth.

Everything you need is inside this vault.

But before you open another box...

You must answer one question honestly.

Victor frowned.

The letter continued.

Do you seek revenge...

...or justice?

Silence filled the chamber.

Marcus looked at Victor.

The answer mattered.

Not to the dead.

To the living.

Victor slowly folded the letter.

"I wanted revenge."

He looked toward Ethan's blue dinosaur, still clipped to his belt where Lily had tucked it into his coat before he left the hospital.

"Now..."

He closed his eyes briefly.

"I want my son to grow up without this war."

Marcus gave a small nod.

"I think that's the answer your father hoped for."

Victor walked toward the first steel cabinet.

Inside...

Hundreds of files.

Each labeled with a name.

Politicians.

Judges.

Business leaders.

Crime bosses.

Then...

One drawer stopped him.

It carried only a single word.

Consortium.

He pulled it open.

The first folder contained photographs.

Every known council member.

Some were crossed out.

Dead.

Some had question marks.

Unknown.

Then Victor froze.

One photograph had been marked with a red circle.

Underneath it, his father's handwriting read:

The Caretaker

Real Identity: Unknown

Below the note was another sentence.

If he is still alive... no one around you is above suspicion.

Marcus frowned.

"So Alexander never learned who he was."

Victor slowly turned another page.

His eyes widened.

There...

Stapled to the file...

Was a photograph taken twenty-three years earlier.

Alexander.

Daniel.

Adrian.

And...

A young woman.

Marcus looked closer.

"I've seen her before."

Victor nodded slowly.

"So have I."

The woman smiled warmly into the camera.

She couldn't have been older than twenty-five.

On the back of the photo was a handwritten caption.

Evelyn Mercer

The only person who escaped the Consortium alive.

Marcus looked up.

"The woman from Daniel's list."

Victor nodded.

"If she's alive..."

"...she knows who The Caretaker is."

Before either man could continue...

Marcus's radio exploded with static.

Then Lily's frightened voice broke through.

"Mr. Blackwood!"

Victor grabbed the radio instantly.

"Lily!"

Her breathing was ragged.

"They're here!"

His heart stopped.

"Who?"

"The lights went out again!"

Gunshots echoed in the background.

Hospital alarms screamed.

Guards shouted over one another.

Lily cried into the radio,

"They're attacking the hospital!"

Victor's face hardened.

"Ethan?"

A burst of gunfire interrupted the transmission.

Then...

Ethan's tiny voice was heard crying.

"Dada!"

The signal cut out.

Only static remained.

Marcus looked at Victor.

The vault.

The truth.

The archive.

Everything they had searched for...

Was finally within reach.

But above ground...

Victor's son was under attack once again.

Victor closed the vault file.

His decision took less than a second.

"We're leaving."

Marcus nodded without hesitation.

"The vault can wait."

Victor looked back at his father's letter one last time.

Then whispered,

"I'll come back."

He turned.

Ran toward the staircase.

And somewhere beneath the distant echo of gunfire...

The heavy vault door began to close on its own.

As it slowly sealed shut, neither Victor nor Marcus noticed one final object resting inside the desk drawer.

A sealed envelope labeled in Alexander Blackwood's handwriting:

May you like

"Open only after you learn who Ethan's real mother is."
