CHAPTER 9: THE CHILD OF THE VAULT

Victor stood frozen in the doorway.
The lullaby drifted through Ethan's bedroom like a ghost from another life.
Ethan lay peacefully beneath the blankets.
His eyes remained closed.
Yet his lips continued moving.
"There are twelve keys..."
"The blood opens the last gate..."
"The Keeper must never wake..."
Each sentence came in the same calm, emotionless voice.
Nothing like his three-year-old son.
Victor stepped toward the bed.
"Enough."
Serena didn't stop singing.
Instead, she smiled.
"You should listen."
Victor grabbed her wrist.
"I said enough!"
The singing stopped instantly.
Silence filled the room.
Ethan's breathing became normal again.
His face relaxed.
As if nothing had happened.
Victor stared at Serena.
"What have you done to him?"
She gently pulled her hand free.
"Nothing."
"You expect me to believe that?"
"I simply reminded him."
Victor's eyes narrowed.
"Reminded him of what?"
Serena looked toward Ethan.
"Children remember more than adults think."
Victor slammed his fist against the headboard.
"Stop speaking in riddles!"
For the first time...
Serena's smile disappeared.
"You really don't remember the night he was born."
Victor hesitated.
Fragments flashed through his mind.
The hospital.
Doctors rushing through the hallway.
A sudden power outage.
A masked nurse injecting something into his arm.
Darkness.
Then waking up beside Elena.
Only Ethan in her arms.
Everything after that had always felt... incomplete.
Serena noticed the change in his expression.
"You're starting to remember."
Emma quietly entered the room.
The moment Serena saw her, she stood.
The two young women faced each other.
Years of history hung between them.
Emma spoke first.
"You lied to me."
Serena lowered her eyes.
"I know."
"You said we would escape together."
"I meant it."
Emma laughed bitterly.
"You handed Mom over instead."
Silence.
Victor looked from one to the other.
"You two..."
"You really grew up together."
Serena nodded slowly.
"We shared the same room."
"The same lessons."
"The same punishments."
Emma whispered,
"And the same nightmares."
Victor frowned.
"What exactly are the Twelve?"
Serena looked at him for a long moment.
Then she walked to the window.
"They call themselves families."
"They're nothing like families."
"They steal children."
"They erase names."
"They create heirs who obey."
Victor glanced at Emma.
"So that's what they did to you."
Serena shook her head.
"They tried."
She slowly turned back.
"But Emma was different."
"Why?"
"Because Elena found her first."
Victor's heart skipped.
"Elena rescued Emma?"
Serena nodded.
"Twice."
"The first time she escaped."
"The second time..."
Serena closed her eyes.
"They caught her."
The room fell silent.
Victor whispered,
"They imprisoned her."
"They experimented on her."
"They forced her to disappear."
Serena looked away.
"Yes."
Victor clenched his fists.
"Then why help them?"
Serena laughed.
A tired, broken laugh.
"Do you think they gave me a choice?"
She slowly rolled up her sleeve.
A small black implant rested beneath the skin of her wrist.
"The moment I disobey..."
"They stop my heart."
Victor stared at the device.
"So the bomb..."
Emma nodded.
"They all have one."
Serena added quietly,
"Not just us."
She looked toward Ethan.
"They'll implant him too."
Victor felt cold rage spreading through his body.
"No."
He picked Ethan up.
"I'm ending this tonight."
Serena shook her head.
"You don't even know where to go."
Victor held up the map Emma had given him.
"The Final Vault."
Serena's face changed.
"You found the map."
"You know what it is?"
"I've been there."
Victor froze.
"What?"
"When I was thirteen."
"What did you see?"
Serena's lips trembled.
"I still dream about it."
Before she could continue...
A grandfather clock somewhere inside the mansion began chiming.
One...
Two...
Three...
Until the twelfth bell echoed through the halls.
Every light in Blackwood Manor suddenly flickered.
Then stabilized.
A hidden mechanical rumble shook the floor.
Emma's face drained of color.
"No..."
Victor looked at her.
"What happened?"
She whispered,
"The inheritance activated."
Deep beneath the mansion...
Ancient gears turned for the first time in decades.
Massive stone doors slowly opened.
Dust filled forgotten corridors.
Power flowed into machines that had slept for generations.
On a wall covered in brass engravings...
Twelve empty keyholes began glowing.
Only one remained dark.
The one marked with the Blackwood crest.
Back upstairs...
Victor's phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
He answered immediately.
This time...
There was no distorted voice.
Only breathing.
Then...
A woman spoke.
Softly.
"Victor."
His knees nearly gave out.
"Elena..."
"I don't have much time."
"Where are you?"
"They've moved me."
"I'm beneath the Vault."
Victor's grip tightened.
"I'm coming."
"No."
Her voice became urgent.
"Listen carefully."
"They're using me as the Thirteenth Key."
Victor frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"I don't know."
"They never told me everything."
"But Victor..."
Her breathing became uneven.
"If you open the Vault..."
"Promise me one thing."
"Anything."
"No matter what you see..."
"Don't trust..."
The line suddenly filled with static.
A man's voice interrupted.
"You've had enough family time."
The call disconnected.
Victor slammed the phone onto the desk.
"We're leaving."
Serena stepped in front of him.
"You'll never reach the Vault through the mansion."
Victor frowned.
"Why?"
"Because every entrance is being watched."
Emma looked at Serena suspiciously.
"So what do you suggest?"
Serena hesitated.
Then quietly said,
"I know another way."
Emma immediately objected.
"It's a trap."
Serena looked directly into her eyes.
"If I wanted you dead..."
"I would've left you in the tunnel."
Silence.
Victor studied Serena's face.
For the first time since all this began...
He didn't see manipulation.
He saw exhaustion.
Regret.
Fear.
After several long seconds, Victor nodded.
"Show us."
Serena led them toward the oldest part of Blackwood Manor.
Not the basement.
Not the secret elevator.
But the family chapel.
A place Victor hadn't entered since Elena's funeral.
The candles had long since burned out.
Dust covered every pew.
At the center stood a marble statue of an angel.
Serena placed both hands on the statue's wings.
Twisted.
A loud crack echoed beneath the floor.
The altar slowly slid aside.
A spiral staircase descended into darkness.
Emma stared in disbelief.
"I never knew this existed."
Serena answered quietly,
"Only one person showed me."
Victor looked at her.
"Who?"
She swallowed.
"Your father."
Victor's eyes widened.
"My father?"
"He was trying to destroy the Twelve."
Victor felt another piece of his past shatter.
"My father died twenty years ago."
Serena met his eyes.
"No."
"He was murdered."
Before Victor could respond...
A gunshot echoed through the chapel.
The bullet shattered the angel statue.
Stone exploded across the room.
A familiar male voice echoed from the shadows.
"I was hoping all of you would gather in one place."
Victor turned slowly.
A tall man stepped into the candlelight.
Silver hair.
Tailored black suit.
Calm smile.
Victor recognized him instantly.
"Derek..."
Dr. Derek Hartman.
The doctor who had signed Elena's death certificate.
The man who had pronounced her dead.
Hartman smiled politely.
"Good evening, Victor."
Then he looked at Emma and Serena.
"My daughters."
Emma's face went pale.
Serena closed her eyes.
Victor felt his blood turn to ice.
"My... daughters?"
Hartman's smile widened.
"Not by blood."
"But by design."
He raised a small remote in his hand.
"You've all worked so hard."
"So now..."
May you like
"Let's wake the Vault together."
