CHAPTER 12: THE TRIGGER WORD

Victor stared at the screen.

Emma stood in the center of the chapel.

Her right hand gripped a pistol.

The barrel rested against Ethan's forehead.

She wasn't trembling.

She wasn't crying.

She wasn't even blinking.

Her face was completely empty.

Like a doll waiting for instructions.

Victor slammed both hands against the console.

"Emma!"

His voice echoed through the Vault.

She couldn't hear him.

Hartman smiled faintly.

"You always underestimated conditioning."

Victor spun around.

"What did you do to her?"

Hartman folded his hands behind his back.

"Nothing recently."

"The programming was finished years ago."

Elena's face turned pale.

"No..."

Hartman looked at her.

"You rescued her body."

He tapped his temple.

"But you never rescued her mind."

The AI projected a live feed across the chamber.

Serena stood ten feet away from Emma.

She held a knife.

Not because she wanted to attack.

Because she didn't dare fire.

One wrong move...

One involuntary twitch...

And Ethan would die.

Serena whispered,

"Emma..."

No response.

Only silence.

Hartman calmly walked toward the center of the Vault.

"There are many kinds of prisons."

He looked at Victor.

"Chains."

"Walls."

"Fear."

Then he pointed toward the screen.

"And memory."

Victor's hands clenched into fists.

"There has to be a way to stop it."

Hartman smiled.

"There is."

Victor stepped forward.

"Tell me."

Hartman's eyes gleamed.

"Kill me."

Silence.

Victor frowned.

"What?"

"The command network dies with me."

Elena suddenly shouted,

"Don't listen!"

Hartman laughed.

"Good."

"You remembered."

Victor looked between them.

"What aren't you telling me?"

Elena took a slow breath.

"He isn't the controller."

Victor froze.

"What?"

Hartman applauded softly.

"Exactly."

Elena continued,

"He designed the system."

"But he never became its master."

Victor's stomach tightened.

"Then who did?"

Neither Elena nor Hartman answered.

The silence itself became terrifying.

Back in the chapel...

Emma slowly raised the pistol.

The muzzle pressed harder against Ethan's forehead.

The little boy looked up at her.

He wasn't crying.

He simply whispered,

"Emma..."

For the first time...

A tiny tremor crossed her fingers.

Deep inside...

She was still fighting.

Serena noticed it too.

She spoke carefully.

"Remember the roses."

Emma's eyelids fluttered.

"Remember the garden."

A tear rolled down Emma's cheek.

The pistol lowered...

Just an inch.

Hartman's smile faded.

Inside the Vault...

Warning messages flashed across every screen.

MENTAL OVERRIDE FAILING

REINFORCEMENT REQUIRED

Victor stared at the display.

"They're controlling her remotely."

Elena nodded.

"From somewhere inside the estate."

Victor immediately looked at the map of the underground complex.

"There."

A small room blinked beneath the west wing.

NEURAL CONTROL CHAMBER

Victor turned toward the exit.

"I'm stopping it."

Hartman blocked his path.

"You won't make it."

Victor punched him.

Hard.

Hartman staggered backward.

Blood appeared at the corner of his mouth.

He smiled.

"For Elena."

Victor hit him again.

This time Hartman collapsed.

Victor ran toward the door.

Elena called after him.

"Victor!"

He turned.

She held out the black drive.

"No matter what happens..."

"Don't leave this behind."

Victor nodded.

"I'll come back."

Elena smiled sadly.

"I know."

Victor sprinted through the underground corridors.

The countdown continued.

31:44

31:43

The mansion shook with distant explosions.

Emergency doors slammed shut throughout the complex.

Somewhere above...

The battle continued.

He reached the Neural Control Chamber.

The door was locked.

Victor fired three shots into the electronic lock.

The door burst open.

Rows of computers lined the room.

At the center sat a single operator.

A woman.

Her back faced Victor.

She wore a white lab coat.

Long silver hair rested over her shoulders.

Victor aimed his pistol.

"Step away."

The woman slowly turned.

Victor froze.

She looked almost seventy.

Calm.

Elegant.

Her eyes carried the same cold intelligence as Hartman's.

"I've been expecting you."

Victor frowned.

"Who are you?"

The woman smiled.

"My name is..."

She paused.

"...Catherine Blackwood."

Victor's blood ran cold.

"No."

"My grandmother died before I was born."

She tilted her head.

"That's what your grandfather wanted everyone to believe."

Victor felt the room spinning.

"My grandmother..."

She nodded.

"I've been running the Twelve for forty years."

On the central monitor...

Emma's finger tightened around the trigger.

Ethan closed his eyes.

Catherine calmly pressed one key on the keyboard.

Victor lunged forward.

Too late.

The monitor flashed green.

A mechanical voice echoed through the room.

TRIGGER WORD ACCEPTED

Victor looked at the screen.

One word appeared.

HOMECOMING

Back in the chapel...

Emma suddenly whispered,

"Homecoming..."

Her finger began squeezing the trigger.

Serena screamed.

"Ethan!"

The gun fired.

Victor watched in horror through the monitor.

The bullet struck...

Not Ethan.

Someone had thrown themselves between them at the last possible second.

Blood splashed across the marble floor.

Victor couldn't see the person's face.

Only a familiar silver pendant shaped like a white rose.

Emma collapsed to her knees.

Her vacant expression shattered.

She looked at the bleeding figure lying in front of Ethan...

And screamed with a pain that echoed through every speaker in the Vault.

"NO!"

Victor's heart stopped.

He knew that pendant.

May you like

It belonged to Serena.
