CHAPTER 11: THE PRICE OF THE VAULT

The countdown echoed through the chapel.
59:47
59:46
Each second felt like a heartbeat.
Victor looked toward the hidden staircase.
Far below, crimson emergency lights pulsed through the darkness.
The Vault was alive.
And Elena was inside.
The AI spoke again.
AUTHORIZED USER: VICTOR BLACKWOOD.
SINGLE PERSON ACCESS REQUIRED.
PLEASE PROCEED ALONE.
Hartman laughed.
"There."
"You heard it."
"You go alone."
Victor looked at Emma.
Then Ethan.
Then Serena.
Every instinct told him it was a trap.
But Elena was waiting.
He had already lost sixteen years.
He wasn't losing her again.
Victor handed his pistol to Emma.
"Protect Ethan."
Emma shook her head.
"I'm coming with you."
"No."
"We've already lost enough family."
Victor placed both hands on her shoulders.
"I just found my daughter."
"I'm not risking both of you."
Emma's eyes filled with tears.
"Then bring Mom home."
Victor nodded.
"I will."
He stepped onto the spiral staircase.
The stone door behind him slowly closed.
With a heavy THUD, he was alone.
The silence was overwhelming.
The staircase spiraled downward for what felt like forever.
Ancient stone gradually gave way to polished steel.
Old torches became LED lights.
History merged with technology.
Finally, Victor reached a circular chamber.
At its center stood a single door made of black metal.
No handle.
Only a palm scanner.
He placed his hand against it.
A soft chime echoed.
DNA VERIFIED.
WELCOME, VICTOR BLACKWOOD.
The door opened.
Victor expected another bunker.
Instead...
He stepped into what looked like a cathedral built inside a supercomputer.
Towering servers stretched upward like black pillars.
Blue lights pulsed beneath a transparent floor.
Thousands of glass data cubes floated inside illuminated columns.
In the center of the room stood a woman.
Her back was turned.
Long dark hair fell over a simple white dress.
Victor's voice broke.
"Elena..."
She slowly turned around.
Time stopped.
Her face had changed.
She looked older.
Thinner.
A faint scar crossed her left temple.
But her eyes...
They were exactly the same.
Tears filled both of their eyes at the same moment.
Neither spoke.
Neither moved.
Three years of grief.
Sixteen years of stolen family.
Every emotion collided in silence.
Finally...
Victor took one step forward.
Then another.
Elena whispered,
"I thought I'd forgotten your face."
Victor reached her.
His hands trembled as they touched her cheeks.
"You never did."
She smiled through tears.
"No."
"I never could."
He pulled her into his arms.
For a long time...
Neither of them let go.
When they finally stepped apart, Victor noticed something attached to Elena's wrist.
A heavy titanium cuff.
Connected to thick cables leading into the floor.
Victor frowned.
"They chained you here."
Elena nodded.
"I'm part of the system now."
"What does that mean?"
"They couldn't break the Vault."
"So they connected me to it."
Victor's blood ran cold.
"They turned you into a living key."
Elena looked around the chamber.
"You don't have much time."
Victor immediately told her everything.
Emma.
Ethan.
Serena.
Arthur Harris.
The journal.
The explosions.
The attacks.
Elena listened quietly.
Then she smiled.
"You found them."
"Our children found each other."
Victor nodded.
"They're waiting upstairs."
Elena's smile faded.
"No."
Victor frowned.
"What?"
"They're not safe."
Before she could explain...
One of the floating glass columns suddenly illuminated.
A holographic image appeared.
Emma.
Serena.
Ethan.
Hartman.
The chapel.
Victor stared.
"They're watching us."
Elena shook her head.
"No."
"The Vault is."
She touched the air.
The image changed.
Hundreds of camera feeds appeared.
Every hidden room beneath Blackwood Manor.
Every tunnel.
Every laboratory.
Victor whispered,
"My God..."
The estate wasn't merely a mansion.
It was an entire underground city.
Elena enlarged one feed.
Victor's blood froze.
Hartman was smiling.
Too calmly.
Emma had noticed it too.
She slowly backed away from him.
Smart.
Very smart.
But too late.
Hartman suddenly pressed his thumb against the inside of his wrist.
A tiny implant beneath his skin glowed blue.
Instantly...
Every unconscious Disciple lying in the chapel sat upright.
Victor stared.
"They're dead."
Elena answered quietly.
"They were pretending."
The Disciples attacked simultaneously.
Emma fired.
Serena fought beside her.
Ethan hid behind a fallen pillar.
Hartman walked away during the chaos.
Straight toward another hidden staircase.
Victor stepped toward the hologram.
"We have to help them."
Elena grabbed his arm.
"You can't."
Victor turned.
"My children are up there!"
"And if you leave now..."
She looked at the countdown.
42:13
"...everyone dies."
Victor felt trapped.
Save his family.
Or stop the Vault from exploding.
Elena opened a hidden panel beneath the central console.
Inside rested a small black drive.
"No matter what happens..."
She placed it in Victor's hand.
"This leaves with you."
"What is it?"
"The truth."
Victor looked confused.
"The entire Vault?"
Elena nodded.
"A copy."
Victor stared at the tiny drive.
Two centuries of secrets...
Fit inside something smaller than a thumb.
Suddenly...
The AI interrupted.
WARNING.
SECONDARY ACCESS DETECTED.
Elena's face changed instantly.
"No."
Victor frowned.
"What?"
She looked toward the entrance.
"Someone else is here."
Footsteps echoed through the chamber.
Slow.
Confident.
Victor turned.
Hartman emerged from the darkness.
Still smiling.
Still perfectly composed.
He looked at Elena.
Then at Victor.
"I knew you'd come."
Victor raised his fists.
"It's over."
Hartman laughed softly.
"No."
He looked toward the AI core.
"It's just beginning."
Then he held up something Victor had never seen before.
A second black drive.
Identical to the one Elena had given him.
Victor frowned.
"What is that?"
Hartman's smile widened.
"You have the truth."
He gently raised the drive.
"I have the lies."
Before Victor could react, Hartman inserted the drive into the central console.
Every light inside the Vault turned black.
The AI voice glitched.
Then calmly announced:
IDENTITY CONFLICT DETECTED.
TWO HISTORIES FOUND.
UNABLE TO DETERMINE TRUTH.
Victor felt the room shake beneath his feet.
Hartman looked at him with quiet satisfaction.
"Tell me, Victor."
"When the whole world can no longer tell the truth from a perfect lie..."
"Who really wins?"
Then every screen inside the Vault displayed the same horrifying image.
Emma.
Standing alone.
With a gun pointed at Ethan's head.
Victor's heart stopped.
Because Emma wasn't holding the gun willingly.
Her eyes were vacant.
Unfocused.
May you like
As if someone else had taken control of her mind.
