CHAPTER 8 The Last Recording

Richard Sterling's voice echoed through the hidden library with the confidence of a man who had never expected to lose.
"I've waited a very long time for this moment."
The speakers hissed softly.
"I knew Arthur would leave clues."
"I knew Jonathan would crawl out of whatever hole he was hiding in."
"And eventually..."
A brief pause.
"...I knew they would lead you here."
Leo stared at the ceiling.
"Where are you?"
Richard chuckled.
"Closer than you think."
The transmission ended.
Silence settled over the underground library once more.
Jonathan immediately looked around the room.
"He's lying."
Harold frowned.
"You don't think he's actually here?"
Jonathan shook his head.
"Richard never walks into danger himself."
"He sends other people."
Clara noticed something that made her uneasy.
There were no cameras.
No visible microphones.
Nothing that explained how Richard knew they had reached the lower vault.
Unless...
"He doesn't need cameras," she whispered.
Jonathan looked at her.
"What?"
"He built this place."
Jonathan's face tightened.
"No."
"Richard didn't."
"Arthur did."
Clara slowly turned toward the massive black book resting on the marble pedestal.
"Then someone else is watching."
The projector flickered again.
This time...
Arthur's image returned.
But only for a second.
Static rippled across his face.
His voice broke into fragments.
"...don't trust..."
"...listening..."
"...beneath..."
Then the image vanished once more.
Leo clenched his fists.
"Dad!"
Nothing.
Only darkness.
Harold walked toward the projector.
"It's old."
"Very old."
He removed its metal cover.
Inside, the wiring had been neatly cut.
Not burned.
Not damaged by time.
Cut.
Recently.
Jonathan examined the severed cable.
"They've already been here."
Clara's heart skipped.
"Who?"
Jonathan looked around the silent vault.
"They reached this room before we did."
Leo stepped toward the pedestal.
"If they were here..."
"Why didn't they take the Ledger?"
Jonathan answered without looking away from the book.
"Because they couldn't."
He pointed at the silver lock.
"Arthur designed that himself."
"No key?"
"No."
"No combination."
"Then how do we open it?"
Jonathan smiled faintly.
"The lock doesn't recognize keys."
Leo frowned.
"What does it recognize?"
Jonathan looked directly at him.
"Blood."
The room fell silent.
Jonathan explained quietly.
"Arthur told me he created a biometric mechanical lock."
"He used your blood when you were born."
Leo instinctively stepped backward.
"So only I can open it?"
Jonathan nodded.
"As far as I know."
Harold suddenly froze.
"Listen."
Everyone held their breath.
Very faintly...
Somewhere behind the endless shelves...
A page turned.
Just one.
Soft.
Deliberate.
Someone else was inside the vault.
Jonathan motioned for everyone to stay still.
He silently drew a compact pistol from beneath his jacket.
Clara blinked.
"You had a gun?"
Jonathan smiled.
"I've survived thirty-one years for a reason."
The page turned again.
Closer this time.
Jonathan slowly moved between the towering bookshelves.
His footsteps were almost silent.
Clara remained beside Leo.
The underground library seemed endless.
Every aisle looked identical.
Dust floated lazily through narrow beams of emergency light.
Then...
Jonathan stopped.
He lowered his pistol.
"Come out."
No answer.
"I know you're there."
Another page turned.
Finally...
A little girl's voice spoke.
"You shouldn't point guns at people."
Everyone froze.
A little girl?
Jonathan slowly rounded the shelf.
Moments later, he emerged...
Not alone.
Beside him stood a girl no older than thirteen.
She wore faded jeans, an oversized gray hoodie, and worn hiking boots.
Her dark hair was tied into a messy braid.
A canvas backpack hung over one shoulder.
Most strangely...
She looked completely unafraid.
She glanced at Leo.
"So..."
"You're finally here."
Leo stared.
"Who are you?"
"My name's Emma."
She shrugged.
"I've been waiting for you."
Clara frowned.
"Waiting?"
Emma nodded.
"For six years."
Jonathan looked stunned.
"How did you get down here?"
"I live here."
Silence.
Harold blinked twice.
"What?"
Emma pointed casually toward a narrow passage behind the shelves.
"My room's over there."
Jonathan carefully lowered his pistol.
"This isn't possible."
Emma rolled her eyes.
"People keep saying that."
She walked past them toward the marble pedestal.
"I'm hungry."
She opened a nearby cabinet.
Inside were canned food, bottled water, batteries, blankets...
Enough supplies for years.
Leo couldn't believe what he was seeing.
"You've lived underground?"
Emma nodded while opening a can of soup.
"Mostly."
"Alone?"
"Mostly."
Clara knelt beside her.
"Who brought you here?"
Emma stopped eating.
For the first time...
The cheerful expression disappeared.
"My mother."
"Where is she now?"
Emma looked toward the ceiling.
"She went upstairs three years ago."
"And?"
"She never came back."
Jonathan slowly approached the girl.
"What's your mother's name?"
Emma answered without hesitation.
"Evelyn Carter."
Clara's breath caught.
The missing nanny.
The woman Frank had spoken about.
Leo whispered,
"Evelyn..."
Jonathan stared in disbelief.
"She survived?"
Emma nodded.
"For a while."
Clara's voice trembled.
"Evelyn was your mother?"
"Yes."
"She was Leo's nanny."
"I know."
"She disappeared six years ago."
Emma quietly shook her head.
"No."
"They made everyone believe she disappeared."
"She hid."
"Down here."
Jonathan looked overwhelmed.
"Evelyn found the vault..."
Emma smiled sadly.
"No."
"Dad showed it to her."
The room went completely still.
Jonathan slowly asked,
"...Dad?"
Emma nodded.
"My father."
"Who was your father?"
Emma looked directly at Jonathan.
"Arthur Sterling."
Leo's mouth fell open.
Jonathan staggered backward.
"No..."
Emma reached into her backpack.
She removed a faded family photograph.
Arthur.
Evelyn.
A baby girl.
Arthur was holding the child while laughing at something outside the frame.
On the back, in Arthur's unmistakable handwriting, were the words:
My daughter deserves a world without the Sterling name.
Leo stared at the photograph.
"Daughter..."
Emma looked at him with gentle eyes.
"I think..."
She smiled awkwardly.
"...that makes me your sister."
Before Leo could answer...
A piercing alarm erupted throughout the vault.
Red emergency lights flooded the room.
A mechanical voice announced:
Biometric lock compromised.
Secondary user detected.
Everyone turned toward the Black Ledger.
The silver lock...
May you like
Had just clicked open by itself.
