CHAPTER 6 The Man They Buried Alive

The final page fluttered across the stone floor.

For a heartbeat, no one moved.

The words burned themselves into Clara's mind.

Trust no Sterling... except the one they buried.

Jonathan Sterling bent down, picked up the letter with surprising care, and brushed a layer of dust from its edge.

His expression softened.

"Arthur always did enjoy dramatic endings."

Leo stared at him.

"My father... really wrote that?"

Jonathan nodded.

"Every word."

Harold Benson took a cautious step forward.

"You're supposed to be dead."

Jonathan gave a bitter smile.

"I know."

"I attended your funeral."

"So did I."

Harold blinked.

"What?"

Jonathan looked toward the cracked ceiling.

"It was strange watching people bury an empty coffin."

Before anyone could ask another question, another explosion echoed through the underground complex.

Dust cascaded from the ceiling.

The emergency lights flickered.

Jonathan's expression instantly changed.

"They've started collapsing the tunnels."

Clara frowned.

"They?"

"Richard's cleanup team."

"He's trying to kill everyone down here?"

Jonathan looked directly at her.

"No."

"He's trying to erase forty years of evidence."

Leo stepped forward.

"If Richard isn't my grandfather..."

Jonathan interrupted gently.

"He raised your father."

"That's not what I asked."

Jonathan remained silent.

The boy's voice grew stronger.

"Tell me the truth."

Jonathan looked at Arthur's letter in his hands, then at the frightened eleven-year-old standing before him.

"You deserve better than another lie."

He exhaled slowly.

"Richard Sterling adopted Arthur when he was nine."

Leo's eyes widened.

"My father was adopted?"

"Yes."

"Nobody ever told me."

"Because Richard spent millions making sure nobody knew."

Harold frowned.

"That doesn't explain you."

Jonathan nodded.

"It explains everything."

He walked toward one of the old crates and sat down.

"I wasn't adopted."

"I was Richard's biological son."

Silence.

"So Arthur and I weren't brothers by blood."

"We became brothers by choice."

Clara struggled to process what she was hearing.

"Why fake your death?"

Jonathan laughed once.

"Because I made the mistake of asking too many questions."

He stared into the darkness as though watching memories unfold.

"When I was twenty-seven, I discovered the Black Ledger."

"I confronted Richard."

"I told him I was going to the FBI."

"And?"

Jonathan slowly unbuttoned the collar of his shirt.

A thick scar wrapped around his neck.

"He tried to execute me."

Leo gasped.

Jonathan touched the scar.

"I survived."

"Barely."

"He buried me in someone else's grave."

Harold whispered,

"My God..."

Jonathan nodded.

"Arthur saved me."

"He found me before I suffocated."

"He hid me."

"He created the story that I had died overseas."

"For thirty-one years..."

"I've lived in the shadows."

Leo's hands trembled.

"My father knew you were alive?"

Jonathan smiled sadly.

"He visited me every Christmas."

"He never missed one."

The boy's eyes filled with tears.

"He never told me."

"He wanted to."

Jonathan looked away.

"But Richard was always watching."

A low electronic beep interrupted them.

Jonathan instantly turned.

One of the surveillance monitors hidden inside the Archive had come alive.

Static.

Then a grainy security feed.

Sterling Manor.

Or what remained of it.

Firefighters continued battling the blaze.

Television crews crowded the front gates.

Reporters shouted questions.

Richard Sterling stood before dozens of cameras.

His tailored suit was covered in soot.

His face carried the perfect expression of grief.

"We've suffered an unimaginable tragedy tonight."

He paused dramatically.

"My beloved grandson..."

His voice cracked.

"...did not survive."

Leo stared in disbelief.

"They're telling everyone I'm dead."

Jonathan nodded.

"They need the world to believe that."

"Why?"

"Because dead heirs don't inherit fortunes."

Clara felt her pulse race.

Richard wasn't simply trying to murder Leo.

He was rewriting history in real time.

Live on national television.

The screen changed.

Another camera angle.

Eleanor Sterling stood beside detectives, sobbing into a handkerchief.

"We searched everywhere."

Her voice trembled convincingly.

"We tried so hard..."

Clara clenched her fists.

Lies.

Every sentence.

Every tear.

Then something unexpected happened.

A reporter raised her hand.

"Mr. Sterling..."

Richard nodded.

"Yes?"

"Several guests told police they heard the child calling for help from an upstairs window after everyone had evacuated."

The courtyard fell silent.

Richard smiled calmly.

"They were mistaken."

The reporter frowned.

"But there are multiple witnesses."

Richard's smile never faded.

"Trauma creates false memories."

Jonathan switched off the monitor.

"He's already controlling the story."

Another explosion.

Closer this time.

The floor shook violently.

Harold looked toward the ceiling.

"They're almost through."

Jonathan stood.

"Then we don't have much time."

He walked to the largest crate in the Archive.

Instead of opening it...

He pushed it aside.

Beneath it was a circular steel hatch.

He spun the wheel.

Cold air rushed upward.

Clara peered inside.

A ladder disappeared into darkness.

"Another tunnel?"

Jonathan nodded.

"No."

"What then?"

"The original vault."

Harold stared.

"I thought this was the vault."

Jonathan shook his head.

"This..."

He gestured around the enormous Archive.

"...is only the waiting room."

Before they could descend...

The sound of boots echoed behind them.

Not one pair.

Many.

Flashlights pierced the darkness beyond the broken steel doors.

A voice shouted,

"There!"

Another voice,

"Don't let them reach the lower vault!"

Jonathan cursed under his breath.

"They're faster than I expected."

He turned to Clara.

"Take Leo."

"What about you?"

"I'll slow them down."

"No."

"You don't have a choice."

Leo grabbed Jonathan's arm.

"I'm not leaving you."

Jonathan knelt in front of him.

His expression softened for the first time.

"Your father once made me the same promise."

"What happened?"

Jonathan smiled sadly.

"He broke it."

He gently removed a silver ring from his finger.

Inside it was engraved:

A & J. Brothers Forever.

Jonathan slipped the ring into Leo's hand.

"If I don't make it..."

"No."

"Listen to me."

Leo's eyes filled with tears.

Jonathan continued.

"The Black Ledger is beneath us."

"So is the truth about your family."

He looked toward Clara.

"Whatever happens..."

"Don't let Richard reach it first."

Suddenly...

A deafening gunshot echoed through the chamber.

Jonathan's body jerked violently.

A dark stain spread across his shoulder.

Behind them, emerging from the smoke with a rifle still raised...

Stood Eleanor Sterling.

Her mascara was gone.

The tears had vanished.

The grieving aunt seen on television no longer existed.

She smiled coldly.

"I've spent eleven years cleaning up Arthur's mistakes."

She chambered another round.

May you like

"And I'm not about to let his son become the last one."
