CHAPTER 13 The Man Outside the Door

The iron lock turned once.

Then twice.

No one breathed.

This time, Richard Sterling's voice wasn't coming through hidden speakers or an old recording.

It came through solid steel.

He was really there.

Jonathan quietly retrieved his pistol from the floor.

He checked the magazine.

Three rounds.

Only three.

Harold picked up a rusted fire axe leaning against the wall.

Clara instinctively pulled Leo and Emma behind a row of filing cabinets.

Evelyn gripped her daughter's hand so tightly that her knuckles turned white.

Outside, Richard chuckled.

"I know you're frightened."

No one answered.

"You should be."

The lock stopped turning.

Silence.

Then came an unexpected sound.

Richard sighed.

"I suppose introductions are overdue."

Jonathan raised the pistol.

"I'm not interested."

"No," Richard replied calmly.

"You've spent thirty-one years looking for answers."

"It would be a shame to die without hearing them."

Jonathan's finger tightened on the trigger.

"You murdered Arthur."

"I did."

The confession came so easily that everyone inside the chamber froze.

Richard continued.

"I ordered Eleanor to delay the rescue helicopter."

"I instructed my mechanic to sabotage the fuel line."

"And when Arthur survived the crash..."

A brief pause.

"I sent someone to finish the job."

Leo closed his eyes.

The last hope that his father's death had been an accident vanished forever.

Clara whispered,

"Why admit it now?"

Jonathan answered without taking his eyes off the door.

"Because he thinks we're already dead."

Richard laughed softly.

"Very good, Jonathan."

"You always were the clever one."

Leo stepped forward.

His voice trembled, but he forced the question out.

"Why?"

The hallway outside fell silent.

Then Richard answered.

"Because Arthur chose you."

"I don't understand."

"You don't need to."

"I do!"

Another long pause.

Finally, Richard spoke.

"The Black Ledger doesn't belong to the Sterling family."

"It never did."

"It belongs to the Carter bloodline."

Emma looked at Evelyn.

Evelyn slowly lowered her head.

Richard continued.

"Arthur wanted to return everything."

"He wanted to destroy the empire."

"He wanted to expose me."

"He wanted to place the Ledger into the hands of its rightful heirs."

Leo frowned.

"So why kill him?"

Richard's voice hardened.

"Because compassion has no place in dynasties."

Jonathan slammed his fist against the wall.

"You stole children."

"You murdered families."

"You buried people alive."

Richard laughed.

"No."

"I preserved something far more valuable."

Jonathan's expression twisted with disgust.

"You call this preservation?"

"I call it continuity."

Harold suddenly noticed something.

The old computer screen was still active.

The message had changed.

The DNA analysis continued running.

Lines of green text scrolled downward.

Clara stepped closer.

"There's more."

The computer beeped again.

A new line appeared.

Unknown Subject Identified

Everyone leaned in.

The name slowly materialized.

Richard Sterling

Silence.

Then another line.

Probability of biological relation to Carter family: 99.97%

Evelyn gasped.

Jonathan stared.

"No..."

Leo looked from the screen to the iron door.

"What does that mean?"

Harold answered first.

"It means..."

He swallowed.

"...Richard is a Carter."

Outside the door...

There was no sound.

No denial.

No laughter.

Nothing.

Jonathan finally understood.

"That's why."

Clara looked at him.

"What?"

Jonathan spoke slowly, piecing decades of lies together.

"He wasn't protecting the Sterling family."

"He was the Carter bloodline."

Richard finally laughed again.

A colder laugh than before.

"Congratulations."

"You've solved half the puzzle."

Leo frowned.

"Half?"

Richard's voice became almost nostalgic.

"My mother was born a Carter."

"When the Sterling family discovered what the Carter inheritance truly represented..."

"They erased her name."

"They married her into the Sterling dynasty."

"They buried every record."

Jonathan whispered,

"You spent your entire life trying to reclaim it."

Richard answered quietly.

"Exactly."

Clara frowned.

"If you're a Carter..."

"Then why hunt Arthur's children?"

Richard sighed.

"Because Arthur misunderstood the inheritance."

"It isn't money."

"It isn't land."

"It isn't the Ledger."

Leo's heart pounded.

"Then what is it?"

Richard remained silent for several seconds.

When he finally spoke...

His voice had lost every trace of arrogance.

"It is a person."

Everyone inside the chamber stared at the door.

Jonathan whispered,

"...What?"

"The Carter inheritance," Richard continued,

"...has always been one child."

Silence.

"A child born once every generation."

"A child carrying something no government, corporation, or family should ever control."

Emma instinctively stepped backward.

Leo felt a knot tighten in his stomach.

Richard continued.

"For over one hundred and fifty years..."

"The Sterlings protected that child."

Jonathan shouted,

"You murdered them!"

Richard answered immediately.

"When necessary."

The room felt impossibly cold.

Clara looked at the computer again.

Another message had appeared.

Primary Successor Located

Everyone slowly turned toward the screen.

One name flashed in green.

Emma Carter

Emma's breathing stopped.

"No..."

Another line appeared.

Transfer Protocol Awaiting Authorization

Jonathan looked horrified.

"Arthur wasn't protecting a fortune..."

"He was protecting Emma."

Richard spoke one last time through the iron door.

"Now..."

"You finally understand why your father hid her."

Then...

A loud electronic chime echoed through the chamber.

The massive iron door unlocked from the inside.

Not outside.

Inside.

Someone...

Or something...

Had granted Richard access.

The door slowly began to swing inward.

Standing alone in the doorway was an elderly man in an immaculate charcoal suit.

His silver hair was perfectly combed.

His hands rested lightly on the head of an ebony cane.

There was no army.

No guards.

No Eleanor.

Just Richard Sterling.

He smiled warmly at Emma.

Then said seven words that made Evelyn scream in terror.

May you like

"Hello, my daughter. I've finally found you."
