Chapter 5: The Son Who Wanted to Confess

The house was silent.
But it was the kind of silence that carried danger.
Robert stood hidden in the darkness of the hallway, watching the son who had helped betray him.
Lucas.
The child who once followed him everywhere.
The boy who used to fall asleep on the boat while Robert taught him the names of the stars.
The boy who once said:
"When I grow up, I'll take care of you, Dad."
Now he stood in the same house, holding the evidence that could destroy his family.
A knife.
Robert's knife.
The same knife that had been on the boat the night he was thrown into the ocean.
For a moment, Robert felt anger rise inside him.
Lucas had been there.
He had watched.
He had done nothing.
But then Robert heard his son's voice.
And something changed.
"I can't let Ethan kill Dad again."
Again.
That single word echoed in Robert's mind.
Again.
Not finish.
Not hide.
Again.
Meaning Lucas knew something Robert didn't.
Lucas placed the bag on the kitchen table.
His hands were shaking.
He looked exhausted.
Like he hadn't slept for days.
"Ethan thinks he can control everything," Lucas whispered.
"But he can't."
Robert and Claire remained hidden.
Watching.
Waiting.
Lucas pulled out the knife.
He stared at it.
Then he closed his eyes.
"I should have stopped him."
His voice cracked.
"I should have grabbed Dad before he fell."
Claire covered her mouth.
Tears filled her eyes.
Hearing her brother admit it made everything real.
Not a suspicion.
Not a nightmare.
A truth.
Lucas had been there.
He had seen their father being murdered.
Five days earlier.
Before the boat trip.
Lucas had never wanted Robert dead.
He wanted money.
He wanted freedom.
But he still believed there were limits.
When Ethan first approached him, Lucas thought it was just another argument.
"Dad won't sell the house," Ethan said.
"So?"
Ethan looked at him.
"So we convince him."
Lucas frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Ethan smiled.
And that smile was the first thing that scared him.
"You don't want to spend your whole life struggling, do you?"
Lucas stayed silent.
Because Ethan knew his weakness.
Lucas had lost everything.
His restaurant failed.
His debts grew.
People who once called him a friend stopped answering his calls.
He was desperate.
And desperate people were easy to manipulate.
"I just need you to help me."
Lucas asked:
"Help you do what?"
Ethan looked toward the ocean.
"Make Dad understand."
Lucas should have walked away.
But he didn't.
That was his mistake.
Back in the present, Lucas continued speaking.
"The day of the boat trip..."
His voice became quieter.
"Ethan told me Dad would finally agree."
Claire stared at him.
"You believed him?"
Lucas looked down.
"I wanted to."
Robert felt something painful.
Because he understood.
Lucas wasn't evil.
He was weak.
And weakness could destroy lives just as easily as cruelty.
"What happened after Dad fell?"
Claire asked.
Lucas closed his eyes.
"I wanted to jump in."
His breathing became heavier.
"I swear I did."
"Then why didn't you?"
Lucas looked toward the floor.
"Because Ethan stopped me."
Silence.
"What?"
Lucas continued.
"He grabbed my arm."
"He said if I jumped, both of us would go to prison."
Claire shook her head.
"No..."
"He told me nobody would believe us. He said we were already guilty."
Lucas wiped his face.
"And then he drove away."
Robert stepped out.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Lucas turned.
The color disappeared from his face.
"Dad..."
Claire stepped beside Robert.
Lucas looked like he had seen a ghost.
Because to him...
Robert was supposed to be dead.
"You're alive."
Robert looked at him.
"Yes."
A painful silence followed.
Lucas dropped to his knees.
"I thought you were gone."
Robert's voice was cold.
"You helped make sure I was."
Lucas lowered his head.
"I know."
Those two words carried years of regret.
"I know."
Robert wanted to scream.
He wanted to ask why.
Why wasn't his love enough?
Why wasn't everything he sacrificed enough?
But instead, he asked the question that mattered.
"Who is the man working with Ethan?"
Lucas froze.
Robert noticed immediately.
"You know him."
Lucas looked away.
"Dad..."
"Who is he?"
Lucas swallowed.
"His name is Victor Crane."
The name meant nothing to Claire.
But Robert's expression changed.
Because he knew.
Victor Crane.
A businessman.
A former partner.
And the only person Robert had ever refused to trust.
Twenty years earlier, Victor and Robert had worked together.
Victor wanted to turn Blackwater Bay into a luxury resort.
Hotels.
Casinos.
Private beaches.
Millions of dollars.
But Robert refused.
Because the project would destroy the fishing village.
Thousands of families would lose their homes.
Victor never forgave him.
"You think you're protecting people," Victor once told him.
"But one day, that land will belong to someone who understands its value."
Robert remembered those words.
Now they returned like a storm.
"So Ethan is working for Victor?"
Claire asked.
Lucas nodded.
"He promised Ethan enough money to pay his debts."
Robert's eyes narrowed.
"Why?"
Lucas hesitated.
Then he said:
"Because Victor doesn't want the house."
A cold wind passed through the room.
"He wants the land."
Suddenly, the lights went out.
Everyone froze.
The house fell into darkness.
Claire whispered:
"Dad..."
Robert raised his hand.
Silence.
Then they heard it.
A door opening.
Someone was inside.
Not Lucas.
Not Claire.
Someone else.
Robert's heart raced.
Footsteps moved slowly through the house.
Calm.
Confident.
Like the person knew exactly where they were going.
Lucas whispered:
"It's him."
Robert looked at him.
"Victor?"
Lucas nodded.
"He knows you're alive."
A voice came from the living room.
"Robert."
The three of them froze.
A deep voice.
Cold.
Controlled.
"I know you're here."
Robert looked toward the doorway.
A man stepped into the light.
Older.
Well-dressed.
A smile on his face.
Victor Crane.
The man who had waited twenty years for revenge.
"After all these years..."
Victor looked directly at Robert.
"You still don't understand, do you?"
Robert stepped forward.
"What did you do?"
Victor smiled.
"I didn't do anything."
He looked toward Lucas.
"Your children did that."
Lucas looked ashamed.
Victor continued:
"I only showed them how easy it was."
Robert's fists tightened.
"You used my family."
Victor laughed softly.
"No, Robert."
He walked closer.
"I revealed your family."
Then Victor placed a folder on the table.
A folder Robert had never seen before.
"Inside this folder is something your wife discovered before she died."
Robert froze.
"Margaret?"
Victor smiled.
"Yes."
Claire looked confused.
"What are you talking about?"
Victor opened the folder.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of Ethan.
Standing beside Victor.
Taken years ago.
Before Margaret died.
Robert stared at the image.
His entire body went cold.
Because Ethan wasn't just manipulated by Victor.
He had known him for years.
Victor leaned closer.
"The truth is..."
He smiled.
"Your son didn't betray you because of money."
A pause.
"He betrayed you because he hated you."
Robert felt the world stop.
Victor placed the photograph down.
May you like
"And tomorrow, I'll show you why."
