Chapter 10: The Wife Who Returned From the Grave

For twenty years, Robert Hale had lived with one painful truth.

Margaret was gone.

Every morning he woke up knowing he would never hear her voice again.

Every night he slept beside an empty space.

Every birthday.

Every anniversary.

Every storm that hit Blackwater Bay.

He remembered the woman he lost.

The woman he promised to love forever.

And now...

That woman had just spoken to him.

Alive.

Impossible.

Yet real.

"Margaret?"

Robert could barely say her name.

His hand shook as he held the phone.

Across the room, Claire, Ethan, Lucas, Michael, and Anna watched his expression change.

They had never seen Robert like this.

Not when he almost died.

Not when he discovered Ethan's betrayal.

Not when he learned Victor had manipulated his family.

This was different.

This was the face of a man seeing a miracle.

Or a nightmare.

"Robert..."

The voice came again.

Older.

Softer.

But unmistakable.

"It's me."

Tears filled his eyes.

"No."

He whispered.

"No, this isn't possible."

A pause.

"I know."

Her voice broke.

"I know what you must be thinking."

Robert closed his eyes.

"Where have you been?"

The question came out before anything else.

Not anger.

Not accusation.

Just pain.

Twenty years of pain.

The phone remained silent for several seconds.

Then Margaret answered:

"Hiding."

The meeting happened that night.

Far away from Blackwater Bay.

In an abandoned lighthouse overlooking the ocean.

A place Robert had never visited before.

A place Margaret chose because, according to her, "the ocean remembers everything."

Robert arrived with Michael and Claire.

Ethan wanted to come.

But Robert stopped him.

Not because he hated him.

Because this moment belonged to the past.

A past that needed answers.

When the lighthouse door opened...

Robert stopped breathing.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Her hair was silver.

Her face had changed.

But her eyes...

Those eyes were the same.

The eyes that looked at him across crowded rooms.

The eyes that smiled when she was happy.

The eyes he had searched for in every person he met after her death.

"Robert."

He couldn't move.

For several seconds, he simply stared.

Then he whispered:

"You're alive."

Margaret nodded.

"I'm sorry."

And those two words destroyed him.

Because they were the words he never expected to hear.

Robert walked toward her.

But he didn't hug her.

Not immediately.

There were too many questions.

Too much confusion.

"Why?"

His voice cracked.

"Why did you let me believe you were dead?"

Margaret looked down.

"I didn't have a choice."

Robert's expression hardened.

"No choice?"

His voice rose.

"I buried you."

"I mourned you."

"I raised our children alone."

His eyes filled with tears.

"Do you know what that did to me?"

Margaret closed her eyes.

"I know."

"No."

Robert shook his head.

"You don't."

"I watched you from afar."

That sentence froze him.

"What?"

Margaret looked at him.

"I watched you."

Robert stepped back.

"All these years?"

She nodded.

"I saw you visit my grave."

His face changed.

"I saw you talk to my picture."

Her voice trembled.

"I saw you grow older without me."

Robert turned away.

Because hearing that hurt more than anything.

She had been alive.

And she had watched him suffer.

"Explain."

That was all Robert could say.

So Margaret did.

Twenty years ago...

She had discovered Victor's entire plan.

Not only the illegal land deals.

Not only the manipulation of Ethan.

Something much darker.

Victor had people inside the government.

Inside the police.

Inside businesses throughout Blackwater Bay.

If Margaret exposed him, she would not simply destroy Victor.

She would put her entire family in danger.

Especially Ethan.

Because Ethan had already become connected to Victor.

Without knowing the full truth.

"When I confronted Victor..."

Margaret said quietly.

"He threatened me."

Robert's hands tightened.

"What did he say?"

Margaret looked at him.

"He said if I exposed him, he would destroy the family."

A pause.

"He said he would make Ethan hate you."

Robert looked down.

"He succeeded."

Margaret nodded sadly.

"Yes."

Then came the night everyone remembered.

The night Margaret died.

But the truth was different.

Her car accident was not an accident.

Someone damaged the brakes.

She lost control.

The car went over the cliff.

But before the car fell...

Someone rescued her.

Someone working against Victor.

A secret group of people who had been collecting evidence against him.

They saved her life.

But there was a problem.

Victor believed she was dead.

And they decided to let him believe it.

Because Margaret becoming "dead" was the only way she could survive.

"The world needed me gone."

Robert looked at her.

"And I needed you."

The words broke her.

"I know."

Michael stepped forward.

"So why didn't you come back after Victor was stopped?"

Margaret looked at him.

"Because he wasn't stopped."

Everyone froze.

"What?"

She shook her head.

"Victor was never alone."

She looked at Robert.

"Someone helped him."

The room became cold.

Again.

The same mystery.

The same shadow.

"Who?"

Margaret hesitated.

Then she answered:

"Someone you trusted."

Robert felt his stomach tighten.

"Who?"

Margaret looked at Michael.

Then at Claire.

Then finally at Robert.

"Your son."

Silence.

Nobody moved.

Robert stared.

"Ethan?"

Margaret shook her head.

"No."

Everyone relaxed slightly.

Then she said:

"Lucas."

The world seemed to stop.

Lucas.

The quiet son.

The son who admitted his guilt.

The son who seemed broken by regret.

Claire immediately shook her head.

"No."

Margaret looked at her sadly.

"I wish I was wrong."

Robert's face changed.

"What did Lucas do?"

Margaret took a deep breath.

"Lucas wasn't just manipulated by Ethan."

She looked toward the ocean.

"He was working with Victor before Ethan ever knew about him."

Twenty years ago, Lucas was only a child.

But years later, when he struggled financially, Victor found him.

Just like he found Ethan.

Different weakness.

Same method.

Money.

Promises.

Control.

Margaret discovered it recently.

Before Robert was pushed into the ocean.

She had been watching.

Waiting.

Trying to find proof.

But she never expected Victor's plan to move so quickly.

Robert's mind was overwhelmed.

Ethan.

Lucas.

Victor.

Daniel.

Secrets everywhere.

His family had become a battlefield.

Then Margaret grabbed his hand.

"Robert."

He looked at her.

"There is one more thing you need to know."

"What?"

Her eyes filled with fear.

"The night you fell into the ocean..."

She paused.

"Ethan wasn't the one who planned it."

Robert froze.

"What are you saying?"

Margaret whispered:

"Someone else ordered your death."

The room became silent.

"Someone who knew exactly how to make your children turn against you."

Robert felt a chill.

"Who?"

Margaret looked toward the lighthouse window.

Outside, a black car stopped near the road.

Someone stepped out.

Someone they all recognized.

Margaret's face turned pale.

"No..."

Robert looked.

A figure walked toward the lighthouse.

The person who had been hiding for twenty years.

The person who had started the entire chain of betrayal.

Margaret whispered:

"He's here."

The door handle moved.

Everyone froze.

Then the door opened.

And the person walked inside.

It was Daniel Hale.

Robert's older brother.

The man Margaret suspected.

The man connected to Victor.

The man who had disappeared from their lives.

Daniel looked around the room.

Then smiled.

"After twenty years..."

He looked at Robert.

May you like

"You finally found the truth."
