Chapter 3: The Father Who Returned From the Dead

For three days, the world believed Robert Hale was gone.

A missing fisherman.

A tragic accident.

A seventy-year-old man swallowed by the ocean.

That was the story Ethan wanted everyone to believe.

And for a moment, it worked.

The police searched the coastline.

The local fishermen searched the waters.

Neighbors came to the house with sad faces and whispered condolences.

Everyone thought Robert had disappeared forever.

Everyone except one person.

Claire.

She stood alone outside her father's house, staring at the ocean.

The same ocean that had taken him away.

But deep inside her heart, she felt something she couldn't explain.

A father's instinct.

A daughter's guilt.

A terrible voice telling her:

Something about this was wrong.

Because accidents didn't leave behind fear in people's eyes.

And when Claire looked at Ethan and Lucas...

She didn't see two brothers mourning their father.

She saw two men hiding something.

Ethan moved quickly.

Too quickly.

That was what bothered Claire the most.

While everyone else was grieving, Ethan was already making plans.

The lawyer arrived at the house the day after Robert disappeared.

Claire watched from the hallway as Ethan opened a folder.

A folder that belonged to their father.

Her heart dropped.

"Where did you get that?"

Ethan looked up.

"What?"

"That folder."

He glanced down.

"This? Dad kept his documents here."

Claire frowned.

"But why are you opening it?"

Ethan leaned back.

"Because someone has to handle things."

The answer sounded reasonable.

Almost.

But Claire noticed something.

Ethan wasn't sad.

He wasn't broken.

He wasn't even pretending anymore.

He looked like someone who had finally received what he wanted.

"What if Dad comes back?"

The room went silent.

Lucas looked uncomfortable.

Ethan slowly turned toward Claire.

"Claire."

His voice became colder.

"Stop saying impossible things."

"Impossible?"

She stepped forward.

"People survive accidents all the time."

Ethan smiled.

A smile that didn't reach his eyes.

"Not this one."

Those words stayed in Claire's mind.

Not this one.

How could Ethan know?

How could he be so certain?

At the hospital, Robert was fighting a different battle.

His body was healing.

But his heart...

His heart was broken.

Every night, he woke up from the same nightmare.

The moment before he fell.

The moment he looked into Ethan's eyes.

The moment he realized his own son had chosen money over him.

The nurses noticed the change.

When Robert first arrived, he was a broken old man.

Silent.

Confused.

Lost.

But after waking up, something changed.

The kindness was still there.

The gentle old fisherman was still inside him.

But behind his eyes was something new.

Determination.

The doctor entered his room one morning.

"You were lucky."

Robert looked at him.

"Lucky?"

The doctor nodded.

"Another hour in that water and you wouldn't have survived."

Robert looked toward the window.

Outside, birds flew above the ocean.

The same ocean that almost killed him.

"The sea tried to take me."

He whispered.

"But it gave me another chance."

The doctor studied him.

"Do you want us to contact your family?"

Robert became silent.

A normal person would say yes.

A normal person would want to see their children.

But Robert wasn't the same man anymore.

"They think I'm dead."

The doctor froze.

"What?"

Robert slowly turned.

"My children."

His voice trembled.

"They wanted me dead."

The doctor didn't believe him at first.

Not because Robert seemed unreliable.

Because the accusation was unbelievable.

A father.

Three children.

A lifetime of love.

How could it end like this?

But then Robert told him everything.

The pressure to sell the house.

The boat trip.

The conversation.

The push.

The faces of his children as he fell.

The doctor listened without interrupting.

When Robert finished, the room was silent.

Finally, the doctor asked:

"What do you want to do?"

Robert looked down at his hands.

Old hands.

Hands that built a family.

Hands that worked until they bled.

"I want the truth."

Meanwhile, Ethan was celebrating.

The legal process had begun.

Robert's assets were being reviewed.

The house.

The land.

The savings.

Everything.

But there was one problem.

The inheritance couldn't be transferred immediately.

Robert had created a condition years ago.

A condition nobody remembered.

A condition that would change everything.

The lawyer placed a document on the table.

"Your father added a special clause."

Ethan frowned.

"What clause?"

The lawyer adjusted his glasses.

"If anything happens to him, the property will not automatically go to his children."

Ethan's face changed.

"What?"

The lawyer continued.

"Your father wanted the house to remain in the family only if his children agreed to preserve it as a home."

Lucas looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

"It means..."

The lawyer paused.

"If the children attempt to sell the property for personal profit, the inheritance will be frozen."

Ethan's hands tightened.

"Frozen?"

"Yes."

The lawyer looked at him.

"The house cannot be sold."

The room became silent.

Everything Ethan had planned was collapsing.

All because of one decision his father made years ago.

A decision made out of love.

A decision Ethan now saw as an obstacle.

That night, Ethan lost control.

He threw a glass against the wall.

Lucas watched nervously.

"This isn't over."

Lucas shook his head.

"Ethan..."

"No."

Ethan turned.

"We are not losing everything because of some old document."

Lucas stared at him.

"What are you saying?"

Ethan didn't answer.

But Lucas understood.

And the fear returned.

"You can't be serious."

Ethan walked toward the window.

Outside, the ocean moved calmly.

Almost peacefully.

"The ocean took care of one problem."

Lucas swallowed.

"What problem?"

Ethan looked back.

"Our father."

The next morning, Claire made a decision.

She couldn't ignore the feeling anymore.

She went through old photos, messages, and documents.

She searched for anything.

Anything that could explain what happened.

Then she found something.

A message on her father's phone.

A message Ethan had deleted.

But not completely.

The backup system had saved it.

Claire opened it.

Her hands started shaking.

It was from Ethan.

Sent two days before the boat trip.

The message contained only one sentence.

One sentence that destroyed everything.

"After tomorrow, the house will finally be ours."

Claire covered her mouth.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"No..."

She whispered.

"My brothers..."

At that exact moment, her phone rang.

An unknown number.

She almost ignored it.

But something made her answer.

"Hello?"

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then a weak voice came through.

A voice she knew better than anyone.

A voice she had been praying to hear.

"Claire..."

Her entire body froze.

"Dad?"

The voice became emotional.

"I'm alive."

Claire dropped into the chair.

Tears streamed down her face.

But before she could celebrate, Robert spoke again.

And his next words changed everything.

"Claire... nobody can know."

She wiped her tears.

"Why?"

A long silence.

Then Robert whispered:

"Because whoever tried to kill me..."

The line crackled.

"...will try again."

At the same time, inside the Hale house...

Ethan received a phone call.

A private number.

He answered.

"Yes?"

A man's voice spoke.

"We have a problem."

Ethan frowned.

"What problem?"

"The body wasn't found."

Silence.

Ethan's face slowly changed.

"What did you say?"

The voice repeated:

"Robert Hale is not dead."

The phone slipped slightly in Ethan's hand.

For the first time since pushing his father into the ocean...

Ethan felt something he hadn't felt in years.

Fear.

Because the man he buried in his mind...

May you like

Was coming back.
