Chapter 9 - The Black LedgerThe house erupted into chaos.

Windows shattered.

Bullets tore through the walls.

Daniel grabbed Oliver and dragged him into a hidden passage.

Robert followed.

Victoria screamed from downstairs.

“Robert!”

He turned.

She was trapped behind an overturned cabinet.

Robert rushed back.

Oliver shouted:

“Dad!”

The word escaped before Oliver could stop it.

Robert froze for half a second.

Dad.

One word.

Thirty years too late.

Then he ran toward Victoria.

He pulled her free.

The three of them disappeared into the passage.

Daniel slammed the door behind them.

“They’ll think we went outside.”

Robert looked at him.

“How long?”

“Minutes.”

Oliver held up the ring.

“We need to see what’s inside.”

Daniel nodded.

They reached a small underground room.

There was an old computer.

Oliver inserted the chip.

The screen flickered.

A password appeared.

CLARA'S ETERNAL LIGHT.

Oliver typed it.

Access granted.

Folders opened.

Names.

Payments.

Companies.

Politicians.

Judges.

Police commanders.

And at the top was a file labeled:

ORIGINAL OPERATION: SILVER RING

Oliver opened it.

His face went pale.

The operation had started thirty years earlier.

Its purpose:

Control of Hale Industries succession.

Robert read further.

“The goal was to ensure Robert Hale remained compliant.”

Another line.

Primary leverage: Clara Morgan.

Another.

Secondary objective: eliminate unborn heir if necessary.

Oliver stepped back.

“They planned to kill me.”

Daniel nodded.

Robert stared at the screen.

“No.”

He opened another file.

The real mastermind was listed.

Executive Director: Victor Hale.

Robert’s father.

But beneath that name was another.

Deputy Director: Elias Vance.

And beneath Elias:

Financial Sponsor: James Sterling.

Victoria went silent.

“That’s my father.”

Robert looked at her.

Victoria began shaking.

“No.”

Oliver opened another file.

A surveillance photograph appeared.

James Sterling.

Elias Vance.

Victor Hale.

And a fourth man.

His face had been deliberately blacked out.

Oliver zoomed in.

There was a ring on his hand.

A silver ring.

Clara’s ring.

Oliver whispered:

“Who is he?”

Daniel looked at the screen.

“I don’t know.”

Robert stared.

“You do.”

Daniel looked at him.

“I never saw his face.”

“Then why hide it?”

“Because the person who ran the operation was above all of us.”

Oliver opened the final folder.

A voice recording played.

An unfamiliar man spoke.

“You will make Robert choose wealth over Clara.”

Victor Hale answered:

“And the boy?”

The stranger replied:

“If she keeps him hidden, let him live.”

Victor asked:

“And if she exposes us?”

The stranger’s voice became cold.

“Then the boy disappears.”

Oliver stared.

His breathing became shallow.

The recording ended.

Then another file opened automatically.

A medical report.

Patient: Clara Morgan.

Cause of death: cardiac failure.

Oliver frowned.

He read further.

Then his face changed.

“Dad.”

Robert looked at him.

“This says she was poisoned.”

Silence.

Daniel moved closer.

“Read the next line.”

Oliver did.

Toxin detected: unknown synthetic compound.

Robert stared.

“She wasn't sick.”

Oliver shook his head.

“No.”

He opened the death certificate.

It had been signed by a doctor.

The doctor's name was familiar.

Robert recognized it instantly.

“My private physician.”

Victoria looked at him.

“The doctor who treated your father.”

Robert’s eyes widened.

“That man died twenty-five years ago.”

Daniel said:

“No.”

Robert turned.

Daniel pointed at the screen.

“He changed his name.”

The man who had signed Clara’s death certificate was still alive.

And according to the file…

he was working as Robert’s doctor.

Robert staggered backward.

“That means…”

Daniel interrupted.

“He has been close to you the entire time.”

Then the computer screen went black.

A message appeared.

THANK YOU FOR OPENING THE LEDGER.

Oliver stared.

May you like

Another line appeared.

NOW WE KNOW WHERE YOU ARE.
