Chapter 11 - The Woman With Clara's RingThey rushed outside.

The woman had disappeared.

Only the white umbrella remained in the rain.

Oliver picked it up.

Inside was a note.

Come to St. Michael's alone.

Robert grabbed Oliver’s shoulder.

“No.”

Oliver looked at him.

“If they wanted me dead, they would have killed me already.”

Robert shook his head.

“They want something from you.”

Oliver looked at the ring.

“The ledger.”

Daniel nodded.

“The ledger is not the only thing they want.”

“What else?”

Daniel looked toward Robert.

“Control.”

Robert frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel hesitated.

“The Black Ledger contains evidence.”

“And?”

“It also contains ownership.”

Robert froze.

“Of what?”

“Hale Industries.”

Oliver stared.

“The person who controls the ledger controls the hidden shares.”

Robert understood.

“My father created a secret trust.”

Daniel nodded.

“Worth billions.”

Oliver’s eyes widened.

“And my mother hid it in the ring.”

“Yes.”

Robert looked at Oliver.

“That makes you the legal heir.”

Silence.

Oliver laughed without humor.

“I've spent my life working night shifts.”

Robert looked at him.

“And you could inherit half the company.”

Oliver shook his head.

“I don't care about the company.”

“You should.”

“No.”

He looked directly at Robert.

“I care about what they did to my mother.”

Robert nodded.

“Then we expose them.”

They went to St. Michael's.

The old church was empty.

Candles flickered near the altar.

A woman stood in the shadows.

She was holding a file.

“You came.”

Oliver stepped forward.

“Who are you?”

“My name is Evelyn.”

Robert stared.

He recognized her.

“Evelyn Vance.”

Daniel stiffened.

“Elias Vance's daughter.”

Evelyn nodded.

“He died seven years ago.”

“I know.”

She handed Oliver the file.

“My father wanted me to give you this.”

Oliver opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Clara.

Robert.

Oliver as a baby.

And one photograph of Victoria’s father standing over a crib.

Oliver’s face hardened.

“Why was he there?”

Evelyn looked at Robert.

“He was checking whether you were alive.”

Robert clenched his fist.

Evelyn continued:

“Your mother made a deal with them.”

Oliver stared.

“What deal?”

“She agreed to disappear.”

“For how long?”

“Forever.”

Robert looked stunned.

“Why?”

Evelyn answered:

“Because they threatened to kill you.”

Oliver's voice became low.

“And she kept me safe.”

“Yes.”

“Until she died.”

“Yes.”

Evelyn pulled out another document.

“This is the most important one.”

Oliver read it.

A legal contract.

Clara had transferred custody of Oliver to herself alone.

But beneath her signature was another signature.

Robert Hale.

Oliver stared.

“That isn't my father's signature.”

Robert looked.

He knew it instantly.

“It is.”

Oliver shook his head.

“My mother told me you never signed anything.”

Robert looked horrified.

“I didn't.”

Evelyn nodded.

“That is the final secret.”

She turned the page.

A photograph showed Robert signing a document.

But Robert had been unconscious.

He realized the truth.

“They forged my signature.”

Evelyn nodded.

“And used it to create a false record saying you voluntarily surrendered your parental rights.”

Oliver stared at Robert.

“Your enemies didn't just separate us.”

Robert’s voice broke.

“They legally erased me.”

Evelyn nodded.

Then church doors slammed shut.

A voice echoed from the balcony.

“You were never erased.”

Robert looked up.

The mysterious man from the recordings stood above them.

His face remained in shadow.

He spoke one sentence.

“I was waiting for my son.”

Oliver froze.

Robert turned.

The man stepped into the light.

And Oliver recognized him.

He had seen him before.

In his mother's final photograph.

The man was not a stranger.

May you like

He was someone Clara had trusted.

And someone Robert had believed was dead.
