Chapter 2 - The Letter That VanishedOliver stood in the center of the ballroom, staring at his empty hands.

“No.”

He checked his jacket.

Nothing.

He searched the floor.

Nothing.

His eyes snapped toward Robert.

“You took it.”

Robert shook his head.

“I didn’t.”

“You’re the only person here who needs it gone.”

Robert looked furious.

“No one wants that letter more than I do, but I did not take it.”

Victoria grabbed Robert’s arm.

“Then where is it?”

Nobody answered.

Security guards flooded the ballroom.

Robert shouted for the doors to be locked.

Guests began protesting.

“What is happening?”

“Why are we being detained?”

“This is absurd!”

Robert ignored them.

His eyes remained on Oliver.

“You said someone spoke to you.”

Oliver nodded.

“A man.”

“What did he look like?”

“I couldn’t see his face.”

“What did he say?”

Oliver hesitated.

“You should never have come here.”

Robert’s expression changed.

He knew those words.

Years ago, the private security company that handled his most sensitive business had used that exact phrase.

A warning.

A code.

A message that meant someone had identified a threat.

Robert turned toward his head of security.

“Lock the west wing.”

The man nodded.

Then Robert noticed something.

A woman near the bar was watching Oliver.

She looked terrified.

Before Robert could approach, she disappeared through a service door.

“Stop her!”

Two guards ran after her.

Oliver looked at Robert.

“Who is she?”

“I don’t know.”

But Robert was lying.

He did know.

Not personally.

But he knew the family name attached to her.

Mason.

One of the oldest families in Hale Industries.

The same family whose patriarch had been Robert’s lawyer thirty years earlier.

The same lawyer who had convinced him that Clara was a dead end.

Robert suddenly remembered another detail.

The night he abandoned Clara, an envelope had been waiting for him.

He had assumed it came from her.

Inside had been a short message.

She cheated on you. Leave before she destroys your future.

He had believed it.

He had never asked Clara.

He had simply walked away.

Robert felt cold.

“What if…”

Oliver stared at him.

“What?”

Robert took a breath.

“What if I was lied to?”

Oliver’s anger did not soften.

“You were.”

Robert looked at him.

“You know?”

“My mother told me.”

“What exactly did she say?”

Oliver’s jaw tightened.

“She said you didn’t abandon her because you stopped loving her.”

Robert’s eyes widened.

“She said someone made sure you believed she had betrayed you.”

The old billionaire felt the room spinning.

“Who?”

Oliver shook his head.

“She didn’t know.”

Then Victoria spoke.

“I do.”

Both men turned.

Victoria was crying.

Robert stared at his wife.

“What are you talking about?”

Victoria’s voice trembled.

“My father knew about Clara.”

Robert went completely still.

“Your father?”

“My father knew who she was.”

Oliver stepped toward Victoria.

“How?”

Victoria looked at him.

“Because before I married Robert, my father told me something strange.”

“What?”

“He said Robert once had a woman who almost destroyed the family.”

Oliver’s face hardened.

“My mother didn’t destroy anyone.”

Victoria shook her head quickly.

“I know.”

“Then what did he mean?”

Victoria looked at Robert.

“He said Clara had something that could have cost Robert everything.”

Robert whispered:

“What?”

Victoria took a shaky breath.

“My father never told me.”

Silence.

Then a guard ran into the ballroom.

“Mr. Hale!”

Robert turned.

“We found the woman from the service corridor.”

“And?”

“She’s dead.”

A collective gasp spread through the crowd.

The guard continued.

“But she left something behind.”

He held up a black folder.

On the cover was a single handwritten word.

CLARA.

Robert’s blood ran cold.

Oliver stepped closer.

“Open it.”

Robert did.

Inside was a photograph.

It showed Clara.

Pregnant.

Standing outside a hospital.

Beside her stood a man Robert had not seen in thirty years.

His former lawyer.

Victoria’s father.

And written on the back of the photograph were six words:

He was ordered to erase the child.
