CHAPTER 14 The Last Choice

The words hung in the air.

“You were meant to replace it.”

Claire Bennett had heard threats before.

From competitors.

From investors.

From people who believed money could intimidate anyone.

But Marcus Vale was different.

He was not threatening her.

He was presenting a plan.

A plan that had existed long before Claire knew his name.

A plan that involved her before she was old enough to understand what power was.

Claire stared at him.

“You’re insane.”

Marcus smiled.

“Everyone says that when they first discover the truth.”

“No.”

She stepped forward.

“You’re confusing control with intelligence.”

For the first time, Marcus’s expression changed slightly.

Interest.

Not anger.

Interest.

Because she had challenged him.

“You sound like Evelyn.”

Claire froze.

Her mother’s name coming from his mouth felt like poison.

“Don’t say her name.”

Marcus looked at her calmly.

“Your mother was remarkable.”

“She hated you.”

“Yes.”

The answer surprised her.

Marcus continued.

“And that is why I respected her.”

Claire’s fists tightened.

“You respected her?”

“She was the only person who understood what Meridian truly was.”

A pause.

“She saw the danger.”

He looked at Eleanor.

“But she also saw the opportunity.”

Eleanor immediately interrupted.

“Do not rewrite history.”

Marcus turned toward her.

“You always hated that she understood you better than anyone.”

Eleanor’s expression hardened.

“You killed her.”

Silence.

Everyone looked at Marcus.

For the first time, the room waited for his answer.

But Marcus simply said:

“Yes.”

Claire felt the world narrow.

No excuses.

No denial.

Just one word.

“Yes.”

Her voice became quiet.

“Why?”

Marcus looked at her.

“Because she was going to destroy everything.”

“My mother was protecting me.”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

“She was.”

Claire stepped closer.

“Then why?”

Marcus looked at her.

“Because protecting you meant removing you from the game.”

Claire frowned.

“What game?”

Marcus pointed around the room.

“This.”

He looked at the Ashford mansion.

“Families.”

“Wealth.”

“Influence.”

“Legacy.”

He shook his head.

“People think power is inherited through money.”

A pause.

“They are wrong.”

Marcus looked directly into Claire’s eyes.

“Power is inherited through knowledge.”

Daniel watched Marcus carefully.

For years, Daniel believed he understood power.

Politics.

Public image.

Connections.

But standing in front of Marcus Vale, he realized something.

The Ashfords had been playing a small game.

Marcus had created the entire board.

“You manipulated my family.”

Marcus looked at him.

“Yes.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“You ruined my father.”

“No.”

Marcus shook his head.

“Your father ruined himself when he believed protecting his name mattered more than protecting people.”

Daniel looked away.

The words hurt because they were true.

Marcus continued.

“Your grandfather was weak because he loved too much.”

He looked at Eleanor.

“You were weak because you loved too little.”

Then he looked at Claire.

“But you…”

A small smile appeared.

“You learned from both.”

Claire said nothing.

Because she hated that part of him sounded correct.

She had inherited pieces from everyone.

Nathaniel’s determination.

Evelyn’s courage.

Thomas’s kindness.

Eleanor’s ambition.

But she had spent her life trying not to become any of them.

Marcus walked toward the table.

He placed a small device beside Nathaniel’s notebook.

“What is that?”

Claire asked.

“The original Meridian files.”

Everyone became alert.

Eleanor looked shocked.

“You still have them?”

Marcus smiled.

“Of course.”

He looked at Claire.

“Everything you need to understand why you exist.”

Claire stared at the device.

“Why show me?”

Marcus answered immediately.

“Because I am offering you a choice.”

The room became silent.

“What choice?”

“Take control.”

Claire laughed.

“You think I want Meridian?”

“No.”

Marcus shook his head.

“I think you want justice.”

He stepped closer.

“And Meridian can give you that.”

Claire looked at him.

“You mean power.”

“Yes.”

The honesty was unsettling.

“Power to expose politicians.”

“Power to destroy corrupt companies.”

“Power to make sure no child is ever treated the way your daughter was treated tonight.”

Claire looked toward Sophie.

The little girl was asleep upstairs.

Marcus noticed.

“You see?”

His voice softened.

“That is why you are different.”

Claire looked at him.

“Because I have a daughter?”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“Because you still care.”

A pause.

“Something every person in this room lost.”

The words hit everyone.

Suddenly, Marcus’s security team received an alert.

One of them approached.

“Sir.”

Marcus turned.

“What?”

The man whispered something.

Marcus’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Claire noticed.

“What happened?”

Marcus looked toward the window.

“Someone else found us.”

Eleanor immediately stood.

“Who?”

The guard answered:

“Robert Langley.”

Claire froze.

Robert.

The man who helped her.

The man who exposed Ashford secrets.

The man who was supposed to be on her side.

Marcus smiled.

“Interesting.”

Daniel frowned.

“Robert works for Meridian?”

Marcus laughed softly.

“No.”

Everyone looked confused.

“He works for himself.”

The doors opened.

Robert Langley entered.

But he was not the same man Claire knew.

The friendly advisor was gone.

The calm lawyer was gone.

He walked in with confidence.

Like someone who had been waiting for this moment.

Claire stared.

“You.”

Robert looked at her.

“I’m sorry.”

The apology meant nothing.

“You knew everything.”

“Yes.”

“You knew who I was.”

“Yes.”

“You knew my mother.”

“Yes.”

Claire’s voice shook.

“Why?”

Robert looked around the room.

“Because Nathaniel made a mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“He believed truth alone could defeat power.”

Robert smiled faintly.

“It cannot.”

Marcus watched him carefully.

“You always were ambitious.”

Robert looked at him.

“And you always believed you were untouchable.”

The tension became electric.

Claire looked between them.

“You two know each other.”

Robert nodded.

“We have worked together.”

Marcus corrected:

“No.”

A pause.

“He worked for me.”

Robert smiled.

“Not anymore.”

Then he pulled out a folder.

A folder Claire recognized.

Blue.

The same color as the folder she carried into Ashford Hall.

Her eyes widened.

“What is that?”

Robert looked at her.

“The final document Nathaniel hid.”

Marcus’s expression changed.

“What did you find?”

Robert opened the folder.

Inside was one page.

Only one.

He handed it to Claire.

She read the first line.

And her heart stopped.

FINAL SUCCESSION AGREEMENT

Below it:

The person who inherits Ashford Holdings, Meridian Group, and all related assets will not be Claire Bennett.

Claire looked up.

Confused.

Then she read the next sentence.

The true successor is Sophie Bennett.

The room went silent.

Claire looked toward the stairs.

Her daughter.

The child everyone fought over.

The child everyone wanted to control.

Marcus smiled.

“Now you understand.”

Claire stared at him.

“What?”

Marcus looked at Sophie’s room.

“The game was never about you.”

A pause.

May you like

“It was always about her.”
