CHAPTER 13 The Original Architect

The abandoned Ashford mansion had never felt so silent.
Not peaceful.
Not empty.
Silent in the way a room becomes silent after someone says something impossible.
Everyone was trying to understand the same sentence.
“You are not the heir to Meridian.”
“You are the reason Meridian exists.”
Claire stared at the phone in Daniel’s hand.
The call had ended.
But the voice remained.
Calm.
Confident.
Certain.
The voice of someone who did not fear consequences.
Because people who truly controlled power rarely needed to threaten.
They simply announced what would happen.
Claire slowly turned toward Eleanor.
For the first time, the woman who had built an empire looked small.
Not weak.
Never weak.
But exposed.
“You knew.”
Eleanor did not answer.
Claire stepped closer.
“You knew someone else was behind Meridian.”
Eleanor looked away.
That was enough.
“You lied to me again.”
Eleanor’s expression hardened slightly.
“You don’t understand what you are facing.”
Claire laughed.
A quiet, bitter laugh.
“Everyone says that.”
She looked around the room.
“Everyone keeps telling me I don’t understand.”
She pointed toward the documents.
“But I understand one thing.”
A pause.
“Every person in my life decided they had the right to choose my truth for me.”
Nobody spoke.
Because nobody could deny it.
Claire looked at Eleanor.
“You included.”
Eleanor accepted the accusation.
“Yes.”
The honesty almost made it worse.
“Who is he?”
Eleanor remained silent.
Claire’s voice became colder.
“I asked you a question.”
Finally, Eleanor answered.
“His name is Marcus Vale.”
The name meant nothing to Claire.
But the reaction from Daniel did.
His face changed immediately.
“You’re lying.”
Eleanor looked at him.
“I wish I was.”
Daniel took a step back.
“Marcus Vale died.”
“No.”
Eleanor shook her head.
“The world believed he died.”
Claire noticed the pattern.
Another person.
Another fake death.
Another ghost.
“How many people in your world are actually alive?”
Nobody answered.
Eleanor walked toward the table.
She opened another hidden compartment inside the old desk.
Inside was a small black notebook.
Old.
Worn.
Used.
“This belonged to Nathaniel.”
Claire watched carefully.
“Why show me this?”
“Because Nathaniel was the only person who knew the entire truth.”
Eleanor placed it on the table.
Claire opened it.
The first pages contained handwritten notes.
Names.
Dates.
Financial records.
Then one sentence written repeatedly.
Marcus Vale cannot be trusted.
Claire looked up.
“Who was he?”
Eleanor sat down.
For the first time, she looked tired.
“Before Meridian existed…”
She touched the notebook.
“Before Ashford wealth.”
“Before political influence.”
“Before everything.”
She paused.
“There were three people.”
Claire listened.
“Nathaniel Ashford.”
“Eleanor Ashford.”
“And Marcus Vale.”
Daniel frowned.
“Three founders?”
Eleanor nodded.
“Yes.”
Claire looked at the notebook.
“Then why does everyone say you created Meridian?”
“Because I took control.”
The answer was direct.
“What happened?”
Eleanor looked at the rain outside.
“Marcus believed the world belonged to those willing to control it.”
A pause.
“He did not want influence.”
She looked at Claire.
“He wanted ownership.”
“Of what?”
“Everything.”
Years ago.
Marcus Vale was not the richest person.
He was not the most famous.
But he had something more dangerous.
Patience.
He studied governments.
Corporations.
Families.
He believed people were predictable.
They could be bought.
Broken.
Manipulated.
Eleanor disagreed.
She believed powerful families could control the world through alliances.
Nathaniel believed wealth could create stability.
Three different philosophies.
One organization.
Meridian.
But eventually…
Marcus wanted more.
“He created a system inside Meridian.”
Eleanor continued.
“A system where no one person could escape.”
Claire frowned.
“Even you?”
“Yes.”
Eleanor looked at her.
“Especially me.”
Daniel looked confused.
“Then why did you stay?”
Eleanor’s eyes darkened.
“Because I had a daughter.”
Everyone became still.
Claire understood.
“You mean me.”
Eleanor nodded.
“Marcus discovered your existence.”
Claire’s expression changed.
“What did he want?”
Eleanor answered:
“You.”
The room felt colder.
“He believed you were the perfect successor.”
Claire stared.
“Why?”
“Because you carried three things.”
Eleanor raised three fingers.
“Nathaniel’s understanding of finance.”
“Your mother’s intelligence.”
“And my ability to influence people.”
Claire shook her head.
“That’s insane.”
“Yes.”
Eleanor looked at her.
“It was.”
A sudden sound came from outside.
A vehicle.
Everyone turned.
Daniel moved toward the window.
His face changed.
“They found us.”
Claire immediately became alert.
“Who?”
Daniel looked outside.
Several black vehicles surrounded the property.
Michael reached for his phone.
“No signal.”
Eleanor remained calm.
Too calm.
Claire noticed.
“You expected this.”
Eleanor looked at her.
“Yes.”
Claire stared.
“Why?”
“Because Marcus does not allow unfinished stories.”
The front door shook.
Once.
Twice.
Then a voice came from outside.
“Eleanor.”
Everyone froze.
The voice.
The same voice from the phone.
Marcus Vale.
Alive.
“Open the door.”
Nobody moved.
Then Marcus spoke again.
“Or I will open it myself.”
Eleanor looked at Claire.
“Now you understand why I kept you hidden.”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
She stepped forward.
“You hid me because you were afraid.”
Eleanor looked at her.
Claire continued:
“And now your fear has finally found me.”
The door exploded inward.
Security guards entered.
Not Ashford security.
Not police.
Professional.
Silent.
Controlled.
Behind them walked a man.
Older.
Silver hair.
Dark suit.
Calm eyes.
Marcus Vale.
He looked exactly like someone who had spent decades believing the world belonged to him.
He looked at Eleanor.
“You look well.”
Eleanor stared.
“You should be dead.”
Marcus smiled.
“So should you.”
Then his eyes moved.
Toward Claire.
For several seconds…
He simply looked at her.
Not like an enemy.
Not like a stranger.
Like someone seeing something he had spent years waiting for.
Finally, he smiled.
“Claire Bennett.”
Her expression hardened.
“Who are you?”
Marcus stepped closer.
“I am the reason your mother died.”
The room froze.
Claire’s entire body went still.
Daniel looked shocked.
Eleanor looked furious.
“You told me you would never say that.”
Marcus ignored her.
Claire whispered:
“What?”
Marcus looked directly at her.
“Your mother discovered the truth.”
A pause.
“And she tried to take you away from us.”
Claire’s fists tightened.
“Us?”
Marcus smiled.
“Yes.”
He looked at Eleanor.
“Your mother.”
Then at Claire.
“And your father.”
Silence.
Claire shook her head.
“My father loved me.”
Marcus nodded.
“He did.”
The answer surprised her.
“He was a good man.”
A pause.
“Which is why he had to disappear.”
Claire felt anger rise.
“You destroyed my family.”
Marcus smiled faintly.
“No.”
He looked around the room.
“Your family destroyed itself.”
Then he stepped closer.
“You think this is about money.”
He shook his head.
“It isn’t.”
Claire stared.
“Then what is it about?”
Marcus looked at her.
“The future.”
A pause.
“Because you were never meant to inherit Meridian.”
His eyes narrowed.
May you like
“You were meant to replace it.”
End of Chapter 13.
