CHAPTER 12 The Mother Who Chose Power

Nobody moved.
Not Claire.
Not Daniel.
Not even the air inside the abandoned Ashford mansion seemed willing to move.
The woman standing in front of them was impossible.
A ghost.
A person who had been buried by the world fifteen years ago.
A woman whose name appeared on charity buildings, hospital wings, and business awards.
Eleanor Ashford.
Alive.
And standing only a few feet away from the daughter she had never raised.
Claire stared at her.
The word still echoed in her mind.
“My daughter.”
A sentence that should have brought warmth.
Instead, it felt like a blade.
Because Claire had spent her entire life searching for the people who left her.
And now she had found them.
But none of the answers felt like peace.
Only more pain.
“You knew.”
Claire’s voice was almost a whisper.
Eleanor tilted her head.
“Knew what?”
“That I existed.”
A faint smile appeared on Eleanor’s face.
“Yes.”
The honesty shocked Claire.
No denial.
No excuses.
Just acceptance.
Claire laughed softly.
A broken sound.
“You knew.”
She stepped forward.
“You knew where I was.”
“Yes.”
“You watched me grow up.”
“Yes.”
“You watched me believe my father abandoned me.”
Eleanor remained calm.
“I watched Thomas protect you.”
Claire’s expression hardened.
“Protect me?”
She pointed toward Daniel.
“Your family destroyed mine.”
Eleanor looked at Daniel.
Then back at Claire.
“My family made mistakes.”
Claire stared.
“Mistakes?”
Her voice rose.
“My mother died.”
The room went silent.
“My father disappeared.”
A pause.
“I spent my whole life trying to understand why.”
She stepped closer.
“And you were alive the entire time.”
Eleanor did not look away.
“Yes.”
The answer was almost cruel because of how calm it was.
Claire’s eyes filled.
“Why?”
Finally.
The question she had carried for twenty years.
Why?
Why leave her?
Why hide?
Why allow her to suffer?
Eleanor looked at the floor for a moment.
Then she answered.
“Because I was afraid.”
Claire froze.
She expected many things.
Power.
Coldness.
Arrogance.
Not fear.
“You?”
Eleanor nodded.
“Yes.”
The woman who built Meridian.
The woman who controlled governments and corporations.
The woman who manipulated some of the most powerful people in the world.
Was afraid.
“Of what?”
Eleanor looked at her.
“Of what you would become.”
Claire frowned.
“That makes no sense.”
“It does.”
Eleanor walked slowly through the room.
“You were born into a world where people like me fight for control.”
She touched an old photograph on the wall.
“The Ashfords.”
“The Bennetts.”
“The people behind Meridian.”
“All of us believed power was something you inherited.”
She looked back at Claire.
“But you proved us wrong.”
Claire said nothing.
“You built something without a family name.”
Eleanor’s expression changed slightly.
“You created influence without needing permission.”
A pause.
“That frightened me.”
Claire stared.
“You were afraid of your own daughter?”
“Yes.”
The honesty was disturbing.
“Because you were stronger than all of us.”
Daniel watched silently.
For the first time, Claire saw something unexpected in his face.
Not jealousy.
Not anger.
Respect.
Because he was realizing the same thing.
The person his family underestimated had become the one person they could not control.
Eleanor turned toward Daniel.
“You should not have brought her here.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You should not have lied to her for twenty years.”
The words surprised everyone.
Eleanor’s eyes narrowed.
“You think you are different from me?”
Daniel looked away.
“No.”
A pause.
“I think I finally understand what we are.”
Claire noticed.
For the first time, Daniel was not defending the Ashford name.
He was admitting its damage.
Eleanor ignored him.
She looked at Claire.
“You want answers.”
“Yes.”
“Then listen carefully.”
Eleanor walked toward the old table.
She placed a folder down.
“This is the complete history of Meridian.”
Claire did not touch it.
“Why give it to me?”
“Because it belongs to you.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“Everything belongs to me according to you.”
She looked at the folder.
“First Ashford inheritance.”
“Then Meridian.”
“Now what?”
Eleanor’s expression became serious.
“Now the truth.”
Claire finally opened the folder.
Inside were thousands of pages.
Financial records.
Contracts.
Private agreements.
And one document at the top.
A birth record.
Claire looked at it.
Her hands froze.
The document listed:
Mother:
Eleanor Ashford
Father:
Nathaniel Ashford
Child:
Claire Bennett
She stared.
Seeing it written down made it real.
Even though she had known.
Even though she had suspected.
Reality still had weight.
“Thomas knew.”
Eleanor nodded.
“Yes.”
“Evelyn knew.”
“Yes.”
“Why did they raise me?”
Eleanor looked at her.
“Because they loved you.”
That answer hurt.
Because it was the first honest thing Eleanor had said.
Claire closed the folder.
“Then why didn’t you?”
A long silence.
Eleanor looked away.
“Because I chose something else.”
“What?”
“Power.”
The word hung in the room.
No excuses.
No explanation.
Just the truth.
Claire shook her head.
“You chose power over me.”
“Yes.”
The simplicity was devastating.
Eleanor continued.
“I believed if I controlled enough of the world, I could create a future where you would never be powerless.”
Claire stared.
“But you made me powerless.”
For the first time…
Eleanor looked hurt.
Only for a second.
But Claire saw it.
“You don’t get to call that protection.”
“No.”
Eleanor nodded.
“I don’t.”
Suddenly, Daniel’s phone rang.
He checked the screen.
His face changed.
“What?”
Claire noticed.
“What happened?”
Daniel looked at them.
“It’s Meridian.”
Eleanor immediately reached for the phone.
But Daniel stepped away.
“No.”
Eleanor looked at him.
“You don’t understand.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I understand everything now.”
He answered.
A voice came through.
A man.
Calm.
Cold.
“Daniel.”
Everyone heard it.
Daniel’s face became pale.
“Who is this?”
A pause.
Then:
“You know exactly who.”
Eleanor’s expression changed.
For the first time that night…
She looked afraid.
Claire noticed.
“Who is it?”
Daniel looked at Eleanor.
Then at Claire.
And whispered:
“The real founder.”
Silence.
Eleanor shook her head.
“No.”
The voice continued through the phone.
“You thought you could leave the game, Eleanor.”
A pause.
“But you forgot one thing.”
Claire stepped closer.
“What thing?”
Daniel looked at her.
“The person who created Meridian…”
His voice lowered.
“Was not Eleanor.”
The room froze.
The voice continued:
“She stole it.”
Eleanor’s face turned pale.
Then the caller spoke one final sentence.
A sentence that changed everything.
“Claire Bennett.”
Everyone looked at her.
“You are not the heir to Meridian.”
A pause.
“You are the reason Meridian exists.”
The call ended.
Nobody spoke.
Claire looked at Eleanor.
And for the first time…
The woman who had controlled everything looked truly terrified.
Because someone had just returned.
May you like
Someone even Eleanor feared.
End of Chapter 12.
